Defeated by fatness no more

Happy Monday!

Following my thread last week about how I, and so many of us, are feeling like we're defeated by our weight, here's a support thread for those of us who don't want stop ourselves from living the lives we want any more.

There were some amazing stories shared and so much honesty about how this is a struggle for so many of us. Here's the thread for anyone wanting to read:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4225173-Defeated-by-my-fatness-am-I-alone

I know that I am sick of feeling ashamed of myself. Sick of hiding away. Sick of feeling that I'm judged for my weight. Sick of feeling that I'm letting myself and my family down. Sick of feeling that my inside doesn't match the outside. Sick of living in the same few outfits because everything else is too tight or looks terrible. Sick of seeking solace in food that doesn't nourish me. Sick of treating myself badly.

If you feel the same, come and join us! Everyone will have their own journey, their own approach and that's fine - please, no criticism or judgement of anyone's plan. The main aim is that we all take steps, every single day, to make ourselves feel better about ourselves.

For me, that means today will include drinking water, taking a long lunch and having a dog walk with a friend (this NEVER happens because work always comes first) and sticking with my Cambridge plan.

How about you?

@Roussette portion control is my downfall too. I can quite happily eat the same as my 6ft husband and son but I'm like 8 inches shorter than then and absolutely shouldn't! I also struggle with knowing when I'm just full instead of waiting until I'm absolutely stuffed. Fasting is helping me learn the difference!

Roussette · 02/07/2021 10:39

There is no hope sometimes... o2 my mobile provider are offering free Greggs pasties or Breakfast rolls every Friday or Saturday.

For goodness sake!

Harpy me too. I admire those whose meals are half the size of their DH's.

And I eat too quick. I must stop that.

Onesmallstep67 · 02/07/2021 11:05

So Friday check in is +1lb from last Friday and more than when I hit a very brief low last Saturday. Feel okay generally with this. I am at least staying in the general ball park and not a significant regain. I know that I haven't been as organised or 'on it ' as I could have been - particularly evenings when a bit of boredom snacking has set in again. "I can resist all things except temptation " !

Treaclepie19 · 02/07/2021 11:05

I've just ordered a gousto box! 😊
Portion size isn't my trouble at all. It's snacking and chocolate. Basically emotional eating.

Harpydragon · 02/07/2021 11:47

@Roussette ignore, ignore, ignore! The demon phone shall not have you 😂

@Treaclepie19 fabulous, you must let us know how you get on and whether or not you would recommend

@Onesmallstep67 that's not too bad, you're in the ball park and can easily lose that this week. Have you got a hobby or something you can do on an evening that keeps your hands occupied? I used to knit but have moved on to grown up coloring books!

Onesmallstep67 · 05/07/2021 08:31

Monday again! I have STS over the weekend which all things considered I am happy with. I seem to be a bit stuck at the moment. Not sleeping very well which makes the days feel longer. I’m off on a 350 mile round trip to pick up elder DD from uni. Her being home may also present a degree of challenge as I know she will want us to enjoy the summer whilst she is here and that will no doubt include meals out and more alcohol intake- it’s a hard life 😉

Harpydragon · 05/07/2021 09:26

@Onesmallstep67 Sts is good, you're not gaining anything! Enjoy the summer and just be mindful where you can. Life is for living, not worrying about food, you can sort all that out later.

Roussette · 05/07/2021 13:34

Smallstep STS is ok!

I am hoping for that this week.... we are away on the coast and I can't imagine I won't put on weight, big meal out last night with wine. Ditto every night! I have pledged to eat fish all week as it's so plentiful here, till we come home, perhaps that will help....

Harpydragon · 08/07/2021 14:46

Hope you are all OK. I've lost 1/2lb this week, still a loss! 🤣

Roussette · 08/07/2021 18:32

Well done Harpy.

I'm worried about any weigh in. We are still away in a coastal place and it has been wall to wall wine, G&T, pasties, ice cream, crisps with the wine, and big meals out. I am dreading getting on the scales!

The trouble is.... I've treated this as a 'week off', I have paid no attention whatsoever to being careful, and I need to get my head round that because it means this isn't a lifestyle change enough!

Slothkin · 18/07/2021 19:35

Well it’s not exactly a birthday miracle but my BMI was 30.2 today - just a couple of pounds to my first big target!

Roussette · 19/07/2021 13:29

Wow, well done @slothkin !

After a week away eating and drinking I made an executive decision to not weigh when I got home but to have a few days getting back on track, then look
And I lost a lb. So so relieved

Harpydragon · 19/07/2021 14:25

Well done, you must both be very pleased.

I've lost my way a bit at the moment, not stressing about it, I'll get back on it soon

Slothkin · 19/07/2021 20:28

I had a conversation with the lady who runs the gym studio I’ve started going to which I would have absolutely catastrophised this time last year - basically that when I started I signed up for a class she was worried I’d hate and would put me off the studio entirely because it’s hard. I absolutely love said class because the instructor is fab and knows I’m (literally) working my ass off doing press-ups - I’m lifting about two stone more than my classmates!

Anyway, I said to her I so appreciated that they didn’t say a thing at the time just welcomed me in with a big smile (and a free water bottle).

So I know as I lose weight those exercises will get easier but I’m also appreciating all my body can do right here, right now. Peace out bitches and may your evening also be a happy one ☝️

Slothkin · 19/07/2021 20:30

(Apologies for the stray emoji there!)

Onesmallstep67 · 23/07/2021 13:29

Hi everyone, I didn't want to lose momentum with this thread but life kind of got in the way. We all tested positive for Covid last Friday although younger DD had been unwell for several days before that. I'm fully vaccinated but it's still been pretty unpleasant. Today just beginning to feel a little more myself. Still no taste or smell which appears to be one of the recognised longer lasting symptoms. As I result I have been eating out of hunger but with little joy when can't taste anything. Upside is that my weight is edging down again although that hasn't been my primary concern and I have in fact I have eaten plenty as it seemed important to get some nourishment. No alcohol though and no cravings.
Hope everyone is keeping well. I'm not sure how well we will manage to keep the thread going over the summer but fingers crossed.

Roussette · 23/07/2021 17:13

Hi OneSmall
So sorry to hear about your Covid, how awful. I hope you get your appetite back and your smell and taste. I know it can take a while. Fingers x'd for you.

Slothkins
Well done on your GI Jane workouts! I am honestly in awe. That's fantastic.

Weigh in for me today and I have hit 12stone. Was hoping for 11st something just to break that barrier, but as I'd lost a pound I was happy really, because last weekend was very social with all rules going out the window.

On a bright note (for me) I can get into a few dresses I've been dying to wear, and they looked OK. Another stone and they'll look even better, but I was so inspired about this.

Good luck everyone, keep on keeping on. Smile

Slothkin · 23/07/2021 18:26

Hi @Onesmallstep67! Do you still get an effect with mustard or chilli, things which stimulate the need-non-taste receptors? I watched a documentary about a chef who lost her sense of smell and taste in an accident and that was her first step back.

Slothkin · 23/07/2021 18:34

That sounds fantastic @Roussette - please don’t let a number on the scales spoil the joy of being able to wear a beautiful dress. I definitely have and looking back at photos I was being bonkers!

Roussette · 23/07/2021 20:11

Slothkin So agree.

Because isnt all of this ... how we feel about how we dress, how we look?
Sod the scales Grin

sylv165 · 26/07/2021 11:15

Hello everyone - are you all still here? I have totally lost it over the past few weeks, repeatedly trying and failing to get back into the swing of things. However, something seems to have clicked over the weekend and I think I am back. About bloody time as I have gained 5lbs. Oops!

I haven't caught up completely, but sorry to hear about your brush with covid @Onesmallstep67. I hope you all make a full recovery and get your taste and smell back quickly. My sister had it back in November and it took about 4 months for her senses to come back. It doesn't sound like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but she said it was pretty miserable not being able to enjoy anything. On the plus side she didn't feel like alcohol or sweet things for ages and lost weight as a result!

Roussette · 26/07/2021 12:40

Hi sylv I'm still here, and have this thread on my watch list!

It's so hard when you put weight back on, I am forever teetering on a knife edge with it all!

Had v social weekend, and I wore a dress that I could not have put on 6 months ago, so that was encouraging. And I had a photo taken of all of us round a table (DH, kids, partners etc) and I didn't look quite like the sumo wrestler I normally look like!
I'm trying really hard this week after the weekend, and to break through the 12st barrier!

sylv165 · 26/07/2021 13:30

That's brilliant @Roussette! It might not be as fast you would like but it is definitely working. I'm off out for a walk now, and tomorrow I will brave a run now that the weather has finally broken. I think I would have died if I'd attempted to run over the past couple of weeks, even hanging out the washing felt like a bit too much!!

Keeping my fingers crossed for a 2lb loss by Friday as I think that will be a big psychological boost. Im going on holiday on 7th August so there is some urgency!!

Roussette · 26/07/2021 13:56

Thanks sylv

I'll be willing you on for your -2lb !

Treaclepie19 · 26/07/2021 15:16

Hi all.
I'm here but haven't been managing to lose weight.
Finally seem to have my mojo back and am doing slimming world. Rejoining group on Wednesday (assuming we're out of isolation)

I didn't get on well with gousto 😬 I really don't have the time for proper cooking right now 😭 Maybe when the kids are grown.
I would recommend it though still.
