Losing lockdown pounds & MOVING - 10k steps/day - please join me!

I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

My weather app says 100% chance of snow here tomorrow - going to be more sliding than stepping! Grin

LarsErickssong · 13/01/2021 18:14

@Jemmy360 lockdown here too but my gym still run their full class timetable virtually and have set up a January challenge on Facebook which the person who does the best will win £50, I doubt I'll win but it's still a bit of motivation! They really have been absolutely amazing all the way through since March.

Hoping it doesn't snow here again as it definitely throws a spanner in the works step wise!

MirandaWest · 13/01/2021 20:38

We’re meant to have snow from 3am until 4pm tomorrow. I’ll believe it when I see it Grin

newyearnewme21 · 13/01/2021 22:05

Just found this thread and I’m loving it- OP could have written your post.

Knew I’d gained weight since first lockdown, but bought some scales today and am horrified by how much- I lost about 1.5 stone 2 years ago and I’ve put that on plus the same again, heaviest I’ve ever been! Like you OP it was just boredom/stress and went on takeaways, wine, snacks and of course our friend- magnums!

I’m sticking to 1200 cals a week, but want to aim for 10k steps a day. Like a lot of people I’m WFH and while I didn’t go running or to the gym or anything pre pandemic, I did do a lot of walking in my commute and around the office and socialising etc so I guess I just burned all my calories that way! Going to try and go for a walk tomorrow morning when I wake up, then out at lunch and again after work- will do some steps on the spot while working if needs be! Just something to get my body moving again.

I think that without socialising and things to dress up for and look good at I’ve lost all motivation, but I truly believe we’re in the home stretch of this lockdown and I don’t want to emerge in 3/4/5/however many months when we’re allowed out again, embarrassed I don’t look anything like I did last time I saw anyone!

Have really enjoyed everyone’s posts on here so far, will be following and updating. Thanks all!

newyearnewme21 · 13/01/2021 22:06

*1200 cals a day, not a week obviously! Wink

10kaDay · 13/01/2021 22:41

Welcome @newyearnewme21.... your post rings truly familiar! I also think WFH there is a lot more access to food if you let it happen, eg I wouldn’t have plowed through a family size bag of crisps at the office, but at home where no one can see me - different story Blush

It will be interesting to see how you get on tomorrow with the steps. In the last week it seems that 45 min workout video /30 min walk/10 mins of pacing around my living room gets me to the 10k

Am feeling a bit over-full tonight after eating 1550 cals today (I normally have 1400/1450, not that I religiously plan to that level, more I plan filling but low-ish calorie meals and it turns out like that). Hoping this means my appetite has shrunk after the last couple of weeks 🤞🏼

Morning all 👋

Managed 10k steps yesterday but was too tired to use the bike. I have put on a lot of weight but can't bear to weigh myself as that will have me reaching for the comfort food. I am trying to eat well and keep active.

I miss the gym so much 😢 It helped me cope (when it was open) with the pandemic. Yesterday it rained or drizzled most of the day, today is forecasted the same. I will get back on my exercise bike today though!

10kaDay · 14/01/2021 07:35

Morning all .... hope you’ve not all woken up to ❄️!

@KatherineJaneway: well done on the 10K steps Star
I can understand not wanting to weigh yourself, I didn’t at my worst point either (Dec). Just carry on for a bit and weigh yourself when you are ready/ never! If you are taking healthy actions the weight will follow...

Getting moving for a workout now then a busy work day ahead, think I have a gap to walk around 4pm - hoping will still be light enough to pop out.

Hope you all have a great (and active) day!

Morning all!

Finally stepped on the scales this morning- turns out I have 3 stone to lose, not the 1.5 I originally thought. Weird how it can creep on without noticing right!

Does mean my TDEE has changed, so reckon I can lose pretty comfortably on 1400 cals which will be much easier than 1200. Did a 45 min walk this morning, just over 3500 steps. Feeling good!

Good luck all!

10kaDay · 14/01/2021 09:27

@newyearnewme21 - well done on the walk! How are you counting (phone?) as that seems a low number of steps for the time ...

I eat around 1400 cals a day, it’s actually quite a lot of food if you choose well so hope you will find it comfortable

Feeling good today too - on track for 10k every day this week. 4K steps after my workout AND started work on time Grin

Sorry- I meant 4500 that was a typo! I've got an Apple Watch which I'm not always great at paying attention to but I'm keeping a strict eye on my steps now and also have set up the notification to tell me to stand up.

I did lots of marching on the spot and around the room while making my breakfast this morning and managed to get in another 800 steps! Breakfast was a bowl of Cheerios and oat milks- all weighed out rather than my usual guesstimation, unsurprisingly 30g of cereal looks a lot less than I think. Feel good though!

MirandaWest · 14/01/2021 10:16

Has been snowing here - DS and DD made a snowman before their lessons started Grin

Will hopefully manage a walk at lunchtime and then May pace around the house a bit to increase my steps. Running planned for tkmottow.

ajandjjmum · 14/01/2021 10:24

Scales are a lb up this morning - so I've dressed, put make-up on for the first time this week), and I'm planning to make today a good day!

10kaDay · 14/01/2021 11:28

@ajandjjmum- good to hear you are resolved to have a good day! I think it’s really important not to let scales rule : we know if we are doing the right thing or not!

@newyearnewme21 and @MirandaWest: there’s been some sneaky marching on the spot while on work calls happening here this morning 😉

OP posts:
ajandjjmum · 14/01/2021 13:43

8,000+ steps, so I'm happy with that. The make-up was a waste of time though - not a squirrel nor robin appreciated it!

newyearnewme21 · 14/01/2021 13:51

@ajandjjmum- well done for the steps! Pretty rude of the squirrel and robin though.

Just did a brisk walk around the block in between meetings for another 2000 steps- going to tackle something a bit longer after work. Marching on the spot in the meantime!

Feel very good about food today, not been hungry so far and have stocked the cupboard with low cal snacks which has definitely helped me feel less like I'm on a diet!

LarsErickssong · 14/01/2021 16:03

I'm impressed as I've managed 4K steps so far today without actually leaving the house! During my lunch hour I marched on the spot whilst chopping veg for tea then hung 2 loads of washing up but I put the washing basket at the opposite end of the landing to the airer and walked back and forth for each individual item Grin

ajandjjmum · 14/01/2021 16:41

Well done Lars! I'm tempted to get some sort of neck strap for my phone, so that it captures the random running around I do at home, whilst it sits on my desk! Grin

10kaDay · 14/01/2021 18:22

@LarsErickssong - love your stepping house work tips!

@ajandjjmum - get a faux Fitbit, they are only £20, I’ve linked one earlier..
Then you too can join in the marching on the spot looniness Grin

I hit my 10k about 4.30 today based on : workout video about 3-4K steps, quick walk round the block -3k steps, 3k /30 mins of...

  • marching on the spot off camera on VC
  • pacing up and down the stairs in a couple of 5 min breaks between meetings
  • looping round the living room while on the phone

VERY happy with today’s time efficient stepping Smile

LarsErickssong · 14/01/2021 18:42

Quick walk around the block puts me on 7k and I've still got a gym class to do at 7.15, it's weights heavy though so not many steps which is why I though I best go for a quick walk! I didn't hit 7.5k yesterday so any extra will help make that up.

newyearnewme21 · 14/01/2021 19:29

Hit my 10k steps for today! Had to go to the supermarket after work- normally I go to the nearby Tesco Express but there’s a Waitrose just under a mile away so went there instead to get my steps in.

Now making a big low cal jerk chicken curry and after that and something small and sweet after I’ll be finishing the day on 1430 cals which I’m pretty pleased with!

10kaDay · 14/01/2021 20:30

@LarsErickssong: I’m impressed you’re going to the gym! I think weights make a huge difference so wouldn’t worry about the steps!

OP posts:
10kaDay · 14/01/2021 20:31

@newyearnewme21: sounds like a very positive day

OP posts:
LarsErickssong · 14/01/2021 20:40

@10kaDay I'm not sure if I've already mentioned it up thread (memory of a fish these days!) but my gym are running a January challenge and the person who does the best across all categories will win £50, one of the categories is most virtual classes attended so that's keeping me motivated Grin

10kaDay · 14/01/2021 20:44

GO @LarsErickssong!!! £50 would get you.... glory & a new pair of trainers %Grin
