I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

@KatherineJaneway 😂🤣😂 ... me too! I like the feeling :) it’s no sillier than sitting on your bum disappointed that you haven’t hit the number!

I think it’s a really healthy distraction in these times... I’m also trying to have at least 4 ‘active hours’ with 250 steps (6 would be ideal)

Hello all - I've had a manic week with homeschooling and everything else so not had a chance to say hello! The first part of the week was rubbish for steps - we didn't get out at all (kept leaving it too late and then it was dark) - but we've rejigged things so next week should be better, and I have managed over 10k the last couple of days.

I have been eating pretty well and kept off the alcohol and lost 3lbs since NYD which I'm pleased with.

KatherineJaneway · 10/01/2021 11:21

This thread is helping me to keep motivated so thank you all Smile

ajandjjmum · 10/01/2021 11:35

This thread is great - although I'm a long way from hitting 10,000 every day. It has made me realise how lethargic I had become last year - in the first lockdown we were walking regularly, but I'd totally got out of the habit from July onwards. Haven't been drinking much alcohol (just Seedlip!), so I can't blame that.

Planning a longer walk today - hopefully will hit 10K steps. A little inspired by DS who lives in Sydney currently. He and his GF did the Bondi to Manly walk a couple of days ago - 90,000 steps in 13 hours! He said never again.

I use my iphone to record my steps, and I'm obviously not always carrying it when I'm in the house. I got up this morning and made scones, and when I looked at it, I'd done 750 steps already. So maybe I'm not quite as lazy as I think! Grin

10kaDay · 10/01/2021 12:06

@onemouseplace: that’s fab, well done on the rejig AND the 3 pound weight loss 🎉

@ajandjjmum - wow, 13 hour walk.. sounds lovely to be on the beach though

It’s 12 noon and I’m on 212 steps, pre this effort I could easily see it being 500 on a lazy day ! Off fit a walk shortly which will be 4-6k steps, then I have cleaning/chores after that

Wishing you all a great day!

Evening all! I hope you have all had successful days Smile
Weekly update - Miraculously I have managed to hit 60k steps for the week, considering how much pain I was in Wednesday night/Thursday I'm quite surprised, just goes to show what a day of fully resting can do! As I weigh daily and then compare weekly averages I can't say how much weight I have lost yet as this week was my first full week of weigh ins but come next Sunday I will be able to compare the two.

Plan for this week - I've got 3 gym classes booked and plenty of healthy food, I wasn't focusing massively on food last week as we still had bits leftover from Xmas but as of today all the chocolates have gone and I'm ready to start properly tracking my food from tomorrow. We haven't had a takeaway this weekend but we are going to have one on Friday night so that's something to look forward too. I've also made a spreadsheet to track how much water I'm drinking whilst working, before Xmas I was religiously drinking 3L a day but last week I just couldn't get back into it so I thought something visual might help Grin.

Happy stepping for the week ahead!

Well done @LarsErickssong for hitting your 60k goal!

Really successful results to report here - have hit 83k steps for the week, and even more importantly have done an exercise video 6/7 days (not today) so would like to do the same next week, with prob Thursday as the no video day (those are included in steps).

Results have astonished me: 4 pounds off this week, on top of 4 since Xmas so 8 pounds off since late December.

Haven’t felt hungry/deprived, one think that has helped LOTS is having lunches made for the week, so I’ve just done the same for this week: 2 servings of 2 different soups, and will ring the changes with a wrap one if the days. Pulling together ideas for some quick/easy dinners ok (incl veggie burgers/omelettes, so it’s not going to be gourmet).

I certainly don’t expect to continue to lose at this rate (and know I won’t always hit my steps) but v happy with the start

Wow @10kaDay 8lbs off and 83k steps this week is amazing! Being prepared definitely helps a lot, here's to keeping up the good work Smile

LarsErickssong · 11/01/2021 20:15

Checking in with 7,777 steps for today so far, that's a satisfying number , that was a walk at lunch time and then gym class tonight, it's been a good day on the food front too.
Tomorrow's plan is a walk at lunchtime and then a gym class again but I also need to visit a client in the afternoon who's premises are surrounded by double yellows so I have to park about 1/2 mile away in a Lidl so that will be a few extra steps there too!
@10kaDay I'm going to take a leaf out of your book and I've decided I'm going to reduce my weekly target to 60k steps, I'm going to roughly try and stick to 4 x 7500 and 3 x 10,000 days. I'll look at upping it to 70k again eventually but I'd rather set a realistic target for now and actually hit it than set one that's too night, and 60k is still a hell of a lot better than the 20k I used to do some weeks Blush.

onemouseplace · 11/01/2021 20:24

Well done @LarsErickssong - I've done 9,245 today which I'm pleased with - and I'll probably manage another couple of hundred before bed.

I may do the same target wise - without popping to the shops, library, school etc I'm finding it much harder to get in the incidental steps, and with homeschooling there isn't necessarily the time to fit in a really long walk everyday right now.

10kaDay · 11/01/2021 20:27

Evening all p! Hope you’ve had good days

@LarsErickssong: that seems sensible to vary the target... I’ll likely be doing the same in coming days.

Managed 11.5K here - a 45 min workout video, half hour walk, and a LOT of pacing about on the phone! Now flat out on the sofa and I’m not budging Grin. Tomorrow I’m going to do my 1st strength video, am looking forward to it.

I think the change I need to make is planning a few more of my old favourites/adaptations of on the food front to mix it up a bit ... so going to do slimming world style chips one night, Mexican wraps another... I’ve been eating very healthily/clean but need more variety I think

10kaDay · 12/01/2021 11:18

Hi All - how is everyone's week starting...

@ajandjjmum, @onemouseplace, @KatherineJaneway - how's it going?

Managed the strength video (it was v gentle), but was disappointed that it was only 1.5K. Didn't have any early meetings, so did 30 mins cardio too and WOW - I got that endorphin rush people are always talking about, bit of a SHOCK in a good way Grin.
Have been looking at my diary for next couple of weeks to see when I can schedule that in again (takes an hour so not for busy days/early starts)

At 4.5K steps now, will try to do a 30 min walk later to hit 10K. I also have a new dinner option: GRO 'meat' balls (soya, from co-op). Apparently 5 are 150 cals so going to have that in a tomato sauce with courgetti/peppers: am looking forward to a change.

Hope you all have good days!

Lovely weather here today - chilly but sun is shining. Will be going out for a run soon Smile. Not done many steps yet but I have been working since 7:30

KatherineJaneway · 12/01/2021 13:03

Hi everyone, Sunday was a bad day for me but yesterday managed 900 calories on the bike. I've been out food shopping this morning so at 7.1k now and will get back on the bike later but probably for a shorter time.

Well done everyone for your efforts 👏

Jemmy360 · 12/01/2021 13:05

Hi everyone, meant to post last weds but work and homeschool has taken a bit of adjusting to!

I've managed 7lb off in 10 days which I'm over the moon with. It's mostly bloat so the next weigh ins I'm hoping will be 2-3 lb a week. I'm happy I can do up my walking trousers again.

Still not managed to hit 70k steps a week, but I'm close, I think the ice and snow put a damper on our walks over the weekend but it's all mostly gone now.
Have a great week everyone.

10kaDay · 12/01/2021 17:20

@MirandaWest - hope you enjoyed your run

@KatherineJaneway : thats some great distance on the bike

@Jemmy360 - Star Star Star - 7lbs off is impressive, 7lbs off while working and homeschooling... !! I bet you are delighted, what a great start to the year :)

Jemmy360 · 12/01/2021 19:48

Thanks very much @10kaDay, I am chuffed, but it goes on just as easy if I don't watch it! Am on 11727 today but only managed 5k yesterday, will have to step it up for the rest of the week (haha) I did a 3 mile walk with the dog and some body combat in front of the TV, my face is still red an hour later!

I measured myself today, as sometimes weight isn't a good metric for me to use. After getting rid of the bloat really quickly I struggle to lose lbs, get disheartened then return to eating rubbish. My plan is to measure weekly and see if there are any changes.
Everyone sounds like they are doing really well, it's very motivating to read.

LarsErickssong · 12/01/2021 21:14

@Jemmy360 wow 7lbs off is great! I'm normally terrible at remembering to keep measurements but I'm going to try my best to do them once a fortnight going forward, my gym is running a challenge this month and one of the parts of that is measurements which is what motivated me to start doing it more regularly!

Ending the day on 10,377 here, tomorrow is my rest day so not sure what the plan of action is just yet, definitely a walk at lunch time but not sure what else possibly a Pilates class although that's not many steps!

10kaDay · 12/01/2021 22:05

@Jemmy360: you’ve motivated me off the sofa to do the last few hundred steps to hit 🎯 😀

I think measuring in ways that are not just weight is a great idea.... measurements, but also on the advice of a friend who recently lost 20 pounds ... scary skimpily clad progress photos Blush. Have taken the ‘start’ ones today and looking forward to seeing how things progress every month or so

Ending day on 10,030.. tomorrow’s plan is :

  • 45 min exercise video, a walk around 2pm
  • boring breakfast & lunch plans (porridge, bean soup), but going to try ‘slimming world chips’ tomorrow night (with an omelette)... a friend is doing that and some of their recipes look great

Resident Night-owl checking in. I’ve really bumped my steps since the weekend getting 11k/13k to bring up my average or else I’d have had to leave the thread!
So my average is now in 6k+ will keep at it.
Still hovering at -6lbs but really hoping to start seeing a downtown shift soon as I’m IF/1200kc/AF!! And eating really clean.
Wah!!
I actually did take some awful pics today for my eyes only in a pair of jeans that WERE a tiny little bit big. Omg the horror.
That will keep me focused.
Have a good day every one and bloody well done!

ajandjjmum · 13/01/2021 07:22

Morning everyone!
My weight is holding steady, despite a splurge at the weekend, so I'm pleased about that.
I think I'm beginning to enjoy walking! Yesterday I did 15,000+ steps, which was definitely an exception. I went on a long walk, starting local with no expectations, and due to getting lost over the fields, ended up at my childhood home, I wandered for a good while and enjoyed it. I like walking alone and thinking - nothing heavy - just remembering when I was small.

Today won't be as productive, but if I can get to 7,000/8,000 on a normal day, I'll be happy (for the moment).
Impressed by those of you who have 'a plan'. I tend to drift, which isn't always a good thing. Yesterday I didn't eat anything until I returned from my walk, then a couple of babybels while I cooked a roast meal. So certainly not all good, but at least I wasn't snacking at all.
It's funny - I can't stop once I start, but can quite easily not eat until lunchtime, so am vaguely following 16:8.
Hope everyone has a good day.

onemouseplace · 13/01/2021 08:35

Morning - I managed 7,875 yesterday, which included nearly an hour's walk plus 30 mins exercise video (arms and abs so not huge amounts of steps to be fair).

That's pretty realistic for what I can do in a day at the moment I think as we are trying to limit popping out to the shop for obvious reasons (plus DH normally does that to get his chance to leave the house!)

10kaDay · 13/01/2021 12:33

Hello everyone: its been great to hear from you today @SunscreenCentral, @ajandjjmum, and @onemouseplace

Glad to hear that things are moving well for all

Just a quick mention - despite the thread title, I wouldn't want anyone to think if its not 10k steps they are not doing enough, the idea is just to be more active than we were last year....

Seems there is a lot of evidence that 7.5K steps is what is needed for health, & is definitely more manageable (I'm chucking in a few more for weight management, even if I end up doing them as a an extra walk at the weekend)

@LarsErickssong wow you're so lucky I really miss the gym! Tier 4 here at the moment, and looks like it will stay that way for a while.
Did just over 3 miles with the dog today but no YouTube exercise as today is a rest day.
Snow due to hit here tonight so that might affect my steps for the rest of the week.
Will see what happens!
