I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

@10kaDay glad you're on the mend. Defo go easy on yourself & get to full strength though.

The weather has been so grim & my scales haven't moved so far this week but I've been sticking to my walking & had the children out in all weather. Managed to get to 17k today, a PB for me, although not one I'm likely to repeat much!

Definitely agree about a tracker. I lost all motivation when my old Fitbit broke, it was like what's the point in doing anything if I don't know how many steps I've done!

I've noticed a pattern that every Thursday evening I feel absolutely knackered. The worst of the week is over & Friday isn't so bad, so looking forward to tomorrow evening & relax!

ajandjjmum · 06/02/2021 08:38

So my scales are going up - or at least, went up by a couple of pounds and have stayed there. Not happy, but holding on to the fact that I'm still down by 9 lbs since I started at the beginning of the year. Not the best, but ok and I will live with that.

I've been going off on my solitary walks very happily, but yesterday DH decided to come too. I took him on one of my muddier walks, but when we got to the point where I'd normally head home, he suggested we go a different route through a local country park. It was beautiful, not too busy and the clusters of snowdrops everywhere really brightened up the day. We finally got home having done well over 20K steps. Really helped having someone to chat to (although I do have lovely conversations in my head when alone!), and to pick me up from the mud when I fell over!

Hope everyone has a good weekend, and that you're feeling better @10kaDay

LarsErickssong · 06/02/2021 09:35

@ajandjjmum that walk sounds lovely I was hoping to do plenty of steps this weekend but the weather here is horrendous so not sure how that will go!

My head feels horrendous this morning after one too many gins last night so I'm going to avoid the scales this morning! And I've sent DP to the shop for bacon to try out in the Air fryer, but that will make it super healthy right?! Grin

ajandjjmum · 06/02/2021 11:27

100% @LarsErickssong. Hope you enjoyed the gin! Grin

DH and DD have cycled to the shops this morning, a very kindly bought me a piece of my favourite cake. How can I not eat it without seeming ungrateful?

10kaDay · 06/02/2021 11:35

@ajandjjmum - save it for later or put it in the freezer. Then palm it off on someone else :-)

Hello Ladies - feeling better today, & managed my 10k steps yesterday

(in fact, I think my fit bit stopped tracking for a bit while I was walking around the living room - has anyone else had that happen?). Just walking today, and back to a proper workout routine from tomorrow.

I was VERY proud of myself yesterday - really crappy & exhausting day at work, but managed to stick to the plan and had a scrambled egg GF wrap for lunch, and the bean stew I normally have for lunch for dinner instead of a million calories of rubbish. Scales not really moving but I think they will eventually. @ajandjjmum - we can be patient together.

Planning a treat dinner tonight - a vegan pie (!! not a regular menu item) with veg, a low fat tiramisu (hoping it will taste ok) and a glass of red. Yogurt with berries & seeds for breakfast & a healthy lentil & veg soup for lunch in preparation for the feasting. Will go for a walk around 3-4, catching up on work for a bit as missed a bit this week

@LarsErickssong: I'm looking forward to the air fryer review Grin

Hope everyone has a good saturday :)

Hi all, glad you’re feeling better @10kaDay.

I think I might actually hit my first 10k today since my surgery. I’ve been doing about 5-6000 a day recently and find it hard to get out for a long walk with my 2 small children but my husband took them to the park this morning and I went for a walk by myself and did 8500 steps. I’m feeling really good and so much stronger than before my surgery!

I’m making good progress on the weight loss front. This morning I was 80.5kg down from 86.4kg on 1st Jan so nearly 6kg off. I think not being able to walk for so long and then suddenly doing quite a lot has shocked my body into action 🤣 I’m sure it will slow down but it has given me the motivation to keep going whereas in the past I’d have given up by now.

ajandjjmum · 06/02/2021 13:11

Well done @NoJetter! Glad you're feeling better, and that's great weight loss too.

10kaDay · 06/02/2021 15:12

@NoJetter: wow, 6 Kilos off is great going!

If you’ve done 8.5k on your walk I think you will make it to 10 today 😊

LarsErickssong · 06/02/2021 15:47

@10kaDay the bacon was good but no different to grilling really, I've been hesitant to buy one as I grill everything I can anyway rather than frying. We're going to make homemade chicken burgers and chips using it tonight though which is where I think it will be handy as it means we can have a treat tea and it will hopefully be slightly healthier!

@NoJetter well done on the weight loss and I'm glad to hear you are managing to build up for your steps nicely you'll be managing 10k most days in no time!

10kaDay · 07/02/2021 09:03

Morning all - looks like the weather’s going to be pretty poor this week so hope it won’t put anyone off / can find other ways to be active

Dinner was a nice change yesterday (and didn’t eat the pastry so must have saved a few cals), my dessert wasn’t really worth the calories so that’s a lesson learned (I’d rather have more food at meals/an occasional piece of chocolate or cheese)

Weight is 1 pound down from last weekend, hoping a few good days this week will see that improve. I’ve noticed I’m eating a lot of flour (crackers, wraps) and that the more I have the more I want, so that’s something to watch. Back to it today and planning a good week: I don’t need to meal prep today as freezer a bit full, which saves some time.

Will do a 1hour workout shortly and then will have to walk around house for rest as I won’t want to go out in the snow! I have to clean so that will be a few of steps at least :)

Hope everyone has a good day

ajandjjmum · 07/02/2021 11:45

Jealous of your loss @10kaDay! I'm certainly doing the steps but maybe need to be a little more careful with what I'm eating. Hard when the weather is cold though, and after a long walk you sort of feel that you deserve a treat - limited though it might be. At least I'm not going up! Grin

Hope everyone has a good Sunday.

10kaDay · 07/02/2021 12:06

@ajandjjmum - thanks, but as I've been dropping 3 pounds a week it doesn't feel much! I know that the pounds will be a lot harder to peel off when there are fewer of them to go...

Its actually made me seriously reconsider whether wine/treats are worth it (coming to conclusion: mostly not). I have just looked at a holiday pic of me caught on beach about 1 stone lighter than today... I really do look like the back end of a bus, so a long road ahead, but I plan to get there

buckeejit · 08/02/2021 11:31

Good going everyone & well done @10kaDay on the loss.

I've maintained this week, (bloody scales were considering adding 1lb on before settling!), which is disappointing as I've done loads of steps & stayed on track for calories. I have had weekend junk food though & seems like any carbs & junk I have increase their calories & stick to me like glue! Fingers crossed for better next week. I ordered a dine in for 2 meal as a nod to valentines & am begrudgingly looking at the dessert, defo not worth the calories, would rather have cheese-might just have a tiny bit & let dc eat most of it.

Air fryers are great - I've had an actifry for years & makes good chips!

Sun is out here & will get to my 10k after lunch when I take children out & then early night tonight!

Have a good week all!

LarsErickssong · 08/02/2021 11:47

I well and truly fell off the wagon this weekend and consumed far too much alcohol and food and I'm paying the price today (3lbs on!!). I also started out last week with the intention of doing 10k steps a day which as you can see didn't go too well...Funnily enough I didn't even realise I was near 10k yesterday but it started vibrating just as I got into bed and was taking it off my wrist Grin

The chicken burger and chips we made in the Air fryer were amazing and felt like a real treat but for half the calories of a takeaway so I'm looking forward to using it more.

I'm going to push to do 10k steps at least 4/5 days this week, today should be no problem as the weather is glorious here and I've got a virtual gym class tonight. Need to book on some more for the rest of the week and be super careful with my food but I'm hoping with plenty of water some of this weight will drop off!

buckeejit · 08/02/2021 20:56

Brilliant @LarsErickssong I used to get close & then needed another hundred or two when bedtime came so I'd often be found grunting & doing a half arsed running on the spot to just get to 10k before getting to bed!

I'm terrible when I'm drinking, eat so much & then the hangover needs fed the next day. I'm worried about starting drinking again.

I'm going to try Ote Mabuse dance class on YouTube with my minded children tomorrow & hope that helps. Need to be stricter with myself at the weekends but there's just nothing to look forward to. Gah!

10kaDay · 08/02/2021 21:59

@LarsErickssong: airfryer going on the wish list for new house! Don’t worry about falling off the wagon, let’s just get back on it.

I have also had a few slack days .... boredom ate 12 toffifee yesterday, so was walking up and down a step while watching my film last night to balance a bit Confused

Some sugar/flour creeping back into my diet and that’s making hunger worse, so that’s something to continue to avoid
Steps today diabolical as slept badly and early meetings so no workout which put me off my stride - am going to go for it with 1 hour to start the day tomorrow, and have done some meal planning for the week

  • falafel in pitta on Friday
  • mushroom lasagna and some nice wine on Saturday
  • PLUS some kind of Black Forest naughtiness (maybe ice cream)
So it will be lots of ‘clean’ eating and veg leading up to the weekend

We’re 6 weeks into the New Year, and this is when resolutions crumble, so thank society to you all for hanging in here with me!

Inspired by the ‘6 week challenge ‘ thread: I’m pushing for a stone off by Easter... I will feel a LOT better with that!

Still here @10kaDay... I’m in for the long haul! Under the weather last week so no steps or activity really but I stuck to my windows/calories/AF at least

10kaDay · 10/02/2021 17:21

Hey there @SunscreenCentral - me too, right til the end of Dec!

I’ve been the other way round ... I’m turning into a snack fiend (fortunately I can’t do too much damage as I don’t have much in and no time to go shopping), but have been good with steps as starting to really love my morning workouts and feel the benefits mentally of a quick walk break in the day

Also keeping up with the strolling/stepping in meetings ... been dragged into one now but camera off and I’ve got big plans for the next half hour!

@10kaDay I literally could've written your post! I'm doing well with steps this week (33k so far) but tonight I caved and had 3 chocolate digestives and half a bag of mini eggs, I don't normally have much of a sweet tooth but nipped to the shop for a bottle of wine for DP for Valentine's Day and crumbled!

10kaDay · 10/02/2021 21:18

@LarsErickssong: how big was the bag?? 🧐

I think excess work sends me into ‘nibble mode’, found a few choc tree decorations and made short work of them tonight .. oh well, bumps on every road and all that ...

OP posts:
LarsErickssong · 10/02/2021 21:33

@10kaDay only an 80g bag so I'm not too concerned about those, the chocolate digestives on the other hand were the new 'fully coated' ones and I didn't even dare look at the calories as I only had 30 calories left for the day...
I definitely struggle with snacking more when I'm busy with work although like you I rarely have anything worth snacking on in the house so I'm generally ok, but I went into an actual shop for the first time in a while and got tempted!!

SunscreenCentral · 12/02/2021 19:50

I’m typically a night-time snacker.... toast & cheese...mmm...
But not at the moment or else they are factored in
16.5 down since 02 Jan on Wednesday. I’d like another 10 off. Hoping to get in some bit of exercise at the weekend... feb has been bad so far! I want to get the Feb challenge award on my watch so I’ll kick it up a gear for sure!

Well done @10kaDay and @LarsErickssong

10kaDay · 12/02/2021 21:26

Evening ladies, good to hear from you @LarsErickssong and @SunscreenCentral!

I don’t think we’re alone, @buckeejit, @ajandjjmum and @NoJetter are still here 6 weeks in ... anyone else?

OP posts:
10kaDay · 12/02/2021 21:33

Weight is steady this week, so no loss, but then I’ve been snacking/eating carbs, so serves me right!!

That said, all I had in to snack on today was ryvita so I haven’t been able to go too crazy! Removed the naughties from my shopping basket too so I should be ok next week

I think I will make 10k/day this week, although only on 8k today, will catch up over the weekend

I’ve been having breads (diet ones- GF wraps, thin bagels etc), mash, wedges for the last 2 weeks ... it’s healthier than my pre-Xmas ways but I can see loading up carbs is not v compatible with me losing weight! I need to recommit to laying off the carbs on the evening... which I will do after tomorrow’s V day mushroom lasagne

On the plus side, I’m looking trimmer/more toned, & I just got my ‘I can see you’ve lost weight ‘ so that’s motivation to keep going!
