I’ve gained a whopping 2 stone since March, and have an overall 3-4 stone to lose. This is a combination of : alcohol/crisps/general boredom snacking while WFH and a very sedentary lifestyle.

I used to walk 5-7k steps most days just going to work/out and about at weekends, but now seem to be glued to my office chair or sofa and am really feeling the ill-effects... also without the motivation of social life I have been less inclined to look after myself .

Does anyone want to join me on a push to be less sedentary (& eat healthily) to lose weight

My focus is:

  • 10k steps/day minimum
  • healthy (mostly unprocessed food) diet
  • limiting empty calories from alcohol & sugar

Just got a fit bit to count steps, & will be going for a walk/jog 1st thing to get most of my steps in, then making myself have a few other breaks in the day to get the numbers up

Everyone is doing so well it's great to see. Haven't weighed myself yet this week but I feel better.
Part of my job at the moment is to deliver things to families (covid safe) and today was the first one of this year. Had to do 41 deliveries today all around the city nearest me and last term I was absolutely wiped for the day after finishing, today I got in then took the dog out for 3 miles. That's got to be an improvement hasn't it?
Need to blitz the house tomorrow so lots of hoovering steps for me!

LarsErickssong · 27/01/2021 22:14

Welcome @Porridgeoat I too am starting to find hitting my targets easier I think in the next couple of weeks I will ramp it up from 60k to 70k, also glad to hear you found your deliveries easier @Jemmy360 I think it's really important to focus on non scale victories like these.

Some great step counts from everyone it does make me think I need to try a bit harder once I'm less busy at work from next week!

Ending the day on 7,706 and under my calories so happy with that, I probably need to do 10k tomorrow so will aim for a walk at lunchtime and then another quick 20 minutes round the block at tea time, along with some stepping around the house that should get me there.

10kaDay · 27/01/2021 22:22

13k is pretty impressive @buckeejit!

And @Jemmy360: sounds like you’ve had a very active day too!

Bit baffled by what’s happening on my end: my weight is up v slightly but I think it’s fluid retention related to time if the month

I’ve exercised (quite a bit) more than usual since Sat or so ...averaging about 13k each day (so nearly 2 hours of workouts/stepping etc) and have been INSANELY hungry! I’ve been fine for the last few weeks on 1300-1500 and not very hungry ... but since Sunday I’m constantly starving, and have been eating around 1700-1800 calories of mostly decent/healthy food. This used to happen when I was much younger and did long runs but it’s caught me by surprise this time around.

I think I’m going to try lowering my steps/having more carbs for a few days to see how I get on ... but not very happy about it to say the least😒

@10kaDay Even with a blip, you know that at 13k steps a day, you must be going in the right direction. So disheartening when your body doesn't want to play ball, but you'll push through it.

My steps are still good, and I had a surprise weight loss of a couple of lbs this morning, which has made me happy. So nothing for a week, and then 1 lb yesterday and 2 lb today. Bodies are weird!

10kaDay · 28/01/2021 15:37

Congratulations on the loss @ajandjjmum!

Less starving today, so happy about that, and have already hit 10K for the day (a short workout this morning, a bit of pacing during a meeting & a half hour walk round the block). Am not going to actively try for more today (think I will finish on 11 or so), and see if I have less of an issue with hunger as a result

I think I might avoid the afternoon snacking by abandoning the idea of 3 meals + 1 snack and instead splitting lunch into 2 parts (so eg a soup as lunch part 1, a small wrap or something similar as part 2) and then having a v light dinner... something to experiment with anyway!

Seeing some non-scale wins - I have a small indentation where my waist used to be...
I walked so far today that watch gave me a prize Smile no particular weight loss though... I struggle with regulating my sleep/hydration and I think that’s slowing things down a bit for me.

buckeejit · 28/01/2021 19:27

@Jemmy360 that's a great victory! Agree the non scale victories are so important. I remember last time years ago that I lost a lot of weight-(about the 5 stone that I need to lose again) & had a bath for the first time in ages. When I got in the water didn't cover me as there was literally almost less of me!

@10kaDay I hate it when your body doesn't play ball too-your exercise is inspirational though. I'm also hungry today & knackered but don't know if my body wants more food or more sleep. I'll have a cuppa & chocolate biscuit before bed, then have a treat dinner tomorrow. If I don't cock up this weekend, looks like I'm on track for a good loss on Monday. Keep on truckin' everyone 😁

NoJetter · 28/01/2021 20:49

Hi, can I join? Since new year I’ve been determined to get healthier. A combination of having children 18 months apart (youngest is 2 now) and having a horrendous slipped disc in my back which left me completely housebound and in agony from June to December (plus stress eating) means I am very overweight and I want to lose just over 3 and a half stone, but mainly focussing on having healthy habits and lots of walking.

I had spinal surgery in mid December and I’m doing much better. I can walk again now which is amazing. So far my best day was 9000 steps but usually average about 3-4000 while I’m recovering I don’t want to push myself too far. Although I am really happy with 3000 steps as I don’t think I did 3000 steps combined during the whole time my back was bad!

So far I’ve cut out all the junk I was eating, crisps, cake, chocolates etc, trying to eat less bread and snack on fruit or vegetables and walk as much as I can and I’ve lost 8lb already so I’ve made a good start.

NoJetter · 28/01/2021 20:57

Should also add I am hoping to eventually get back up to 10000 steps. Once when I was having my bathroom fitted and had to get out of the house with a sleep fighting baby I did 21000 steps which I think must me my record Grin

LarsErickssong · 28/01/2021 21:12

@10kaDay I think the important thing to remember is that weight loss isn't always linear, sometimes you will lose consistently through the week but others you might gain a little, then plateau for 5 days and then suddenly lose 4lbs in 48 hours (similar to what had happened to @ajandjjmum ) And if it's that time of the month then I would always expect fluctuations to happen, you could also be retaining more water due to the increase in steps so it might be worth really pushing to drink 2-3 litres of water a day for the next few days if you don't already? I know it's really tough when you see that number on the scales though and it isn't what you wanted.
@SunscreenCentral great non scale victory, I need to take my measurement for my gym challenge this weekend and hoping to have lost a few inches!
@NoJetter welcome Smile it sounds like you had a really tough year last year but well done on the 8lbs lost so far! As you will see we aren't all quite up to doing 10k a day yet, the most important thing is that what you're doing is sustainable and achievable (and not too much pressure on your back!) otherwise you would get disheartened and give up.

Good day here I'm on 9.4k and need to do a few bits round the house before bed so that will get me to 10k. That will leave me with 7.5k to do tomorrow and 10k each day over the weekend . I had also been doing well weight wise (4lbs off since Monday) but forgot to get chicken out the freezer and ended up having McDonald's for tea Blush Now feeling horrendously bloated so expect the scales to be +2lbs tomorrow!

10kaDay · 28/01/2021 22:04

Evening all, and welcome @NoJetter! No obligation to do a full 10k steps, it’s about getting off our bums on a daily basis Grin. Sounds like you are doing well on the food front!

@SunscreenCentral: well done on the emergent return of your waist! It’s great to be able to see the difference:)

Thanks all for the kind messages... I’m feeling better today, think part of the hunger has been tiredness and it’s calmed down a bit today! I’m at 11k steps and planning to walk around for a few minutes to get to 12 before bed, taking it easier than earlier in the week and feeling better for it

@LarsErickssong: thanks for the reminder... off to down some water!

OP posts:
LarsErickssong · 29/01/2021 08:41

@10kaDay glad the hunger has subsided a bit.

As expected the scales were up 2lbs this morning but I've started the day with a quick workout and will make sure I have 3 litres of water so hopefully they will disappear as quickly as they appeared!

10kaDay · 29/01/2021 13:54

I'll be joining you today on knocking it back (2-3L of water that is!)

Pretty good day - I woke up early & did a energetic/sweaty workout before my 8am meeting (which got me to nearly 5K steps), and I also had a 2 hour 'listen in' meeting so walked round the living room. Just been out for a 20 min walk and am up to 14K steps in a multi-tasking tour de force :). Going to make a healthy stirfry for dinner tonight and hoping to see a good number on the scales in next few days...

Hope everyone has a great Friday!

NoJetter · 29/01/2021 18:20

Thanks for all the welcomes! I’ve had a good day today. I am just over 7000 steps which is great for me. I took ds1 out for a walk while ds2 was napping (husband wfh in the house so didn’t leave him alone Grin) but he fell in a puddle 10 mins in and said he wanted to go home so I didn’t do as many steps as I’d have liked but never mind! I did manage to go out for a short walk later but the dh called me to say ds1 was sad I’d gone without him so I had to come back. I’d probably be able to do much more if I could go out by myself but it rarely happens!!

Other than that doing good on the food front. I’d been stuck on 82.4kg for the last 5 days and it came down slightly to 82.2kg. It’s going in the right direction so I’ll take it!

Now doing 10 mins on my exercise bike as my consultant said it would be a good way to recover from the surgery. It won’t add to my steps but any small bit of exercise will help me anyway. Hope everyone else is having a good day.

10kaDay · 29/01/2021 20:16

Well done on the walking @nojetter! I’d count 10 min of slow cycling like 10 min of walking (so 1k steps)... good to mix it up!

OP posts:
LarsErickssong · 29/01/2021 21:32

Last year I got into cycling and used to strap my Fitbit to my trainer as I cycled Blush no way was I missing out on some steps, and I figured I was working harder/burning more cals on the bike anyway.

10kaDay · 30/01/2021 13:08

How’s everyone doing today? I’m at 4K steps and in a very ‘can’t be bothered’ state of mind! Meeting a friend for a walk later so will hit 10k for today and hopefully be a bit motivated for a proper workout tomorrow!

I have planned a treat meal for later: some good life frozen felafel (39 calories each, will have 3 or 4) in a pitta with some wedges on the side... no booze though! 🥙

OP posts:
LarsErickssong · 30/01/2021 13:18

4K here too, that was a trip round Tesco and then I've just been painting some cupboards.
Need to log on a do a bit of work but then I'm going to go for a walk so 10k should be no problem.
My food plans for last night went out the window as I was supposed to be going to visit DP for the weekend but he didn't feel well and has had to go for a test, so I was stuck at home with barely any food in and my tea ended up consisting of Yorkshire puddings, Ben and Jerry's and gin Blush
Will go slightly over calories again today I think but not too concerned.

10kaDay · 30/01/2021 14:15

@LarsErickssong: thats quite a dinner Grin

OP posts:
buckeejit · 30/01/2021 18:03

Yum, that sounds good-I might make houmous tomorrow now you've put me in the mood. I'm on soup for dinner but will indulge in several packets of maize snacks tonight.

Had pizza last night & even trying to make it less indulgent than normal was still over 700 cals. I've been counting calories so much, it was almost hard to enjoy it! Kept a few slices for Breakfast/brunch today & was yum. Shouldn't have had crisps & chocolate after the pizza though 😬

Did a slightly longer morning walk today, then to the shops & just round the road then to just make the 10k for today. Hurrah! Yesterday I managed to get to the heady heights of 15k. I've been having a 'rest' day on Sundays so won't really try to do steps but may try to drag the family out for a short dander.

Saturday night is difficult to keep my willpower in check as it feels like it should be treat night. Last Saturday of dry January though, woo hoo!

SunscreenCentral · 31/01/2021 00:34

Hello everyone! It’s been a good weekend so far on my program...
So far I’ve burnt off 3566kc “active” calories average 594 per day.
61k steps in 50.02km all in 7h of active time walking/cycling and have just started a little bit of weights this week.

Sticking at 1200 per day which I’m finding fine with IF. I had never tried it before but it seems to sit well with me.
I bought this watch to help track exactly all of this stuff so, so far it’s worth the investment!

12 lbs down from 162 - next big target, 145lbs.... onward ⚔️

10kaDay · 31/01/2021 10:04

Morning All, & congratulations on the 12 pounds off @SunscreenCentral! Also welcome to the world of Fitbit Fanaticism (constantly checking our watches step/calorie counts ) 😂

It’s 🎉🎉🎉 here as scale has now dropped to give me 2 pounds off, so it’s 17 pounds down from my highest weight pre-Xmas and, although I’ve got some way to go, I really am feeling the difference.

Got my sights on February now: minimal drinking (1-2 glasses a week max),upping my exercise intensity a bit, and no sugar (the last one is pretty easy). I’d like to see 10-12 pounds off next month which would get me to a weight I feel a lot more comfortable with, and about half way to my final goal.

It’s dry and sunny here ... am going to get out for a walk (and possibly jog a few bits if I’m feeling keen!). I haven’t done many long walks outside on the last few weeks so will be a nice change.

Hi all, well done. Didn't do much yesterday but managed 13k steps on Friday. Not sure what the plan is today

10kaDay · 31/01/2021 13:27

@KatherineJaneway - 13k is great, well done!

Thanks @10kaDay

The issue for me is I easily did 10k a day at work with the commute. I can't wait to get back to the office not to mention the gym Grin
