A weight loss thread with no boring diet info

Hi all
I really need to lose a total of about 4 stone.

I'm not keen on the usual weight loss type chats with methods and foods etc discussed in detail.

So I was trying to think how it could be more interesting.

This might be a crap idea but I know I do better when I have interesting things to do. Today I've done my workout, some drawing and keyboard practice. I've also read a couple of chapters of Women Who Kill (!) and watched The Crown, I'm on Season 2.

It was those things that made snacking on a boiled egg less of a shock 😂

So I was thinking, what about a support thread where we don't talk about the details of our methods, but just check in for support, and tell each other something interesting we've done that day, even just a film we've watched.

Is it a bonkers idea?

Morning all. Had a really good run today and feeling heroic for having made the effort. I’m v v slow but I care not a jot. No Donna Summer today, but I shook it off with Taylor, checked it out now with the funk soul brother and didn’t leave it this way with The Communards.

Anything nice planned, fellow MNers?

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 11:20

Gwen you're not from Brighton 😂
Loving the song refs.

I weighed in a day early because of timings...already bloated and irritable, grr..another pound gone.

No nice plans here sadly, just a care visit. I must plan a nice film for the evening but I don't know what yet.

Another pound! Well done! You must be nearly at half a stone?

I did something rather feeble to make me feel like I’m making progress with weight loss, which was to adjust my starting weight to what it was this time last year, which means I’ve lost 12lb rather than the measly 4 since January. I know, it’s a bit pathetic. Blush

Brighton? I don’t get it, sorry.

GwendolineWindowlene · 21/02/2021 17:36

Just realised that was really unclear! Grin I mean on the weight loss app I’m using I’ve changed the start date to last year, so it shows all the weight I’ve lost since I was at my heaviest.

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 18:26

Gwen you said you'd been listening to Funk Soul Brother which I took to mean Fatboy Slim? There's a song on the same album called You're Not from Brighton, sorry 😂

(It's not very good, that song I mean).

He did one of my favourite videos of all time, maybe my top favourite? Sums up the world!

Re the 12lb, yes, why not, you did well to lose that weight too.

I was starting at my heaviest ever and have lost five pounds since I started this thread. I do want to speed it up but having got a good balance, I don't want to disrupt it. I thought a heavyweight like me would manage at least ten pounds in six weeks.

but I guess there's no point going into the kind of diet territory that I can't stay in and would make me miserable. I don't feel deprived or like "oh no, I'm dieting".

We have a new week starting so yay...I will try harder!

Hey! I think you are both doing absolutely the right thing - slow and steady wins the race.

DH has lost 5lbs in under two weeks but his diet looks so miserable. He maintains he is enjoying his new eating plan (and he has done brilliantly) but it makes me feel miserable just watching it Grin

I drove today to pick up a couple of chairs and saw lots of people out exercising, all shapes and sizes, it was so impressive. I hope everyone keeps it up after lockdown is over.

I am doing ok with my diet and finding it useful to use one of those apps where you log what you eat. I think I will keep up with it because otherwise I drift off into my world of pure imagination where apple crumble and double cream doesn't make me fat!

I have worked a lot today because homeschool is back tomorrow and I get to play at being teacher while the kids sabotage all my efforts...

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 19:30

Glad you're doing wellMrsBob

Does your DH plan to eat that way permanently?

OP posts:
MrsBobDylan · 21/02/2021 21:03

I did ask him today what his plans were and he was a bit vague. He has been running his fastest ever times so I think he will want to maintain his weight loss but I hope he won't stick on the diet. He can be obsessive in general so I keep an eye on him and am ready to launch an intervention Grin

He has started talking about fermented foods which I see some diet nuts discuss on here...

GwendolineWindowlene · 21/02/2021 21:54

Oh lord, we actually bought ingredients to make an apply crumble tomorrow. Perhaps we’re not going about this the right way. Grin

AcornAutumn · 21/02/2021 22:06

MrsBob impressive running! I'm hoping to work up to two hours workouts most days - by the end of the year maybe. I'm sedentary the rest of the time.

I probably told you this story...we had a fire in my block of flats some years ago. One of the firefighters came back for a meeting with residents and management company, to review procedures.

We got chatting and she does 2 hours at the gym before her fire fighting shift! I was thinking, never mind 999, can I have your mobile number?

No, I didn't say that to her 😂 but I really admire those people. She was about my age. Maybe I'm aiming too high but I won't know if I don't give it a bash.

Gwen I did fancy some cake earlier but it passed, I didn't need an intervention like last time!

OP posts:
GwendolineWindowlene · 22/02/2021 11:39

Oh lord, once he's on the fermented food wagon it may be too late for your relationship, MrsBob. Grin

I know someone who is evangelical about all that stuff and her FB is full of the Parkinson's Disease-preventing properties of kale and how nobody would have got Covid if we were all getting enough kombucha.

I'm very hardy, which I put down to the medicinal properties of Creme Eggs.

Magnificent day here, I put up a new bird feeder and really enjoyed having the sun on my face. Off for a sunny walk in a bit.

What's everyone else up to?

AcornAutumn · 22/02/2021 12:14

Not a nice day here at all, lucky Gwen, make the most of it.

I thought it was going to rain while in the vaccine queue (which wasn't long). Looking at the sky, I still think it will.

Something has "turned" inside. I don't react badly to the flu jab but I have a bad feeling about this one. Something tells me no workout tonight. Bummer.

I know nothing about fermented foods but I'm going to hazard a guess they are expensive?

There was a thread last night about a new diet drug. I was curious - I'm not going to try it - looks like it costs about £50 a week!!

OP posts:
AcornAutumn · 22/02/2021 12:54

The sky is now a dense creamy colour that you get pre snow 😱😱😱😱

OP posts:
GwendolineWindowlene · 22/02/2021 14:02

Fingers crossed if you feel rough it won't last long.

AcornAutumn · 22/02/2021 20:59

Thank you Gwen

It's not going well so far. My (normally too low) blood pressure and pulse rate are very high like when you get a weird virus, which I have effectively volunteered for but not the right thread for that...

So it's going to be a long night as I won't sleep but not feeling perky enough to do much.

I really hope this doesn't set back my exercise progress. I used to be a gym regular in my 30s and it was shocking how a bug could set back carefully crafted progress.

I wonder if there will be gym offers. I don't like the local gym but rather miss the rower and the elliptical, which I would have in my dream home along with a Pilates machine...there's a gym a bus ride away which looks nicer.

Among the not nice aspects of the local gym - someone thought it would be good to do the whole place in dark grey. Walls, carpets, fittings, the lot. Honestly, you can't tell where the floor ends and the wall starts.

Best of luck for the night ahead. Is it worth taking some paracetamol as a precaution?

I’ve only been in a gym once, it wasn’t for me. I felt very out of place.

What sort of workouts do you normally do? I have zero ab strength or flexibility, I just have strong sturdy legs.

AcornAutumn · 22/02/2021 21:16

I've taken four already, two more due at 11.

Gyms are very personal...the local one is all blokes grunting or just hanging out chatting. Great for them but not for me. Also the music is so loud, you can't hear your own music.

I do a range of stuff, have adjustable dumbbells at home and do Jessica Smith workouts, I linked to the easy ones when I started the thread. I do the harder ones though!

She likes to mix it up so it's not boring.

In theory I think it must be nice to run outside. In practice, I am clumsy and would slip on leaves etc. There's not really anywhere nice to run in the urbs though.

OP posts:
AcornAutumn · 22/02/2021 21:18

PS I don't have the expensive adjustable dumbbells that you alter with one click...I mean I have the ones where you can put additional weights on.

Sorry, being boring!

OP posts:
GwendolineWindowlene · 22/02/2021 22:03

Yes, I remember you linking to her, I was going to do her stretching exercises. And then didn’t. Blush

Weights are supposed to be the way to go aren’t they? Hopefully you’ll be back in action in a jiffy.

MrsBobDylan · 23/02/2021 08:20

I'm quite a bit shit with exercising, except swimming which I love. I was recently diagnosed with a very mild hip dysplasia on one side, It has caused some accumulate damage to the inside of my hip joint so I have been given exercises by the physio, which I'm so lazy with

You sounds like you have the potential to become a serious exerciser @AcornAutumn . I once met a woman who did weight training and she looked amazing. DH says that muscle burns calories too, so it's a win win.

@GwendolineWindowlene apple crumble is my favourite food in the whole world. I have a sweet tooth and am including puddings in my calorie allowance. At the minute I have a mint magnum every day after dinner and it is bloody awesome!

Re: my diet nut husband, I made us Thai fish cakes last night and he did the salad. He ate so much salad that I couldn't help but laugh. I said that he will eat himself sick of it in the way he did sloppy vegetables Grin

Yesterday I reupholstered this chair - it was made by British furniture makers Scandart in the 50s/60s. This one's for sale so am hoping it will get snapped up as we need the cash!

AcornAutumn · 23/02/2021 10:45

MrsBob do you have pain, I hope not.

I have had two injuries in my life - clumsiness - and physio exercises were brilliant.

I think I used to be a serious exerciser. I hope to be one again.

With the reaction to this effing jab, I think I'm out of action this week. So cross with myself.

OP posts:
GwendolineWindowlene · 23/02/2021 14:06

It’s frustrating, but your mind won’t forget you can do it. When I return to running after a break my body may not be match fit but somehow my brain believes I can do it, so I keep plodding on.
Hopefully you’ll be back in your leg warmers and feeling the burn v soon.

MrsBobDylan · 23/02/2021 18:08

I like to think of you both exercising in leg warmers now, they are due a come back imo.

My hip has been low level painful for a few years - I can have a steroid injection once Covid is done but I think I can really help it if I do the exercises. Being bone idle doesn't help, it is my worst affliction...

Sorry to hear the jab has knocked you off exercise @AcornAutumn Hope you feel better soon.

DS 13 has just eaten my last mint magnum and I can't buy any more until we get paid on Friday. I am incandescent with rage.

SingToTheSky · 23/02/2021 18:09

Fell off thread 😳 not doing too well here really

MrsBobDylan · 23/02/2021 18:53

@SingToTheSky sometimes to do well you have to get all the failures out of the way first! I was very bad at the beginning because I wasn't really aware of how much I was eating. What has been your approach so far or are you working up to that bit? 😀
