Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

thanks Light, got it and accepted

Bookaholic73 · 30/12/2020 21:03

I’m thinking of getting a Fitbit, which one do you recommend? There are quite a few different types.

My aim is to lose 3 stone in the next year (currently making the most of not being on a diet!)

UkSky · 31/12/2020 00:18

The freezer diving is going well.
4 batches of chilli
Pork tenderloin (fat removed) and cooked with mustard orange peel and a spoon of honey.
1.5kg ham cooked in the same sauce which will be great with salad.
4 portions of beef stew. Just need to remove any fat in the morning,
All will be vacuum packed and out back in the freezer ready to use.
More to do tomorrow.

I find it easier if I prepare ahead rather than trying to decide what to cook when I get home.

Will be getting on the scales on Monday morning.

LightandAiry · 31/12/2020 06:34

Morning Smile

Bookaholic I've had my Fitbit for a while, about 2 years so not the newest model, it's a Charge 2 but has been upgraded twice since then I believe. I like the app and the devise also monitors heartbeat. I bought mine from Amazon.

Penguin you and me both, 3 stone would be brilliant for 2021

UkSky You've hit the nails on the head with preparing in advance. I had the idea of deciding what to eat the night before, but that involves hard work when I get home (without any advance prep), also one of my downfalls is popping a piece of cheese here, nibble of something else there when cooking dinner, if it's done in advance that will save some snacking before dinner.

My legs are aching today from walking. I don't want to overdo it, but will try and drag DH and teenagers out tomorrow for a long walk. Unless it's raining as I've not ordered waterproofs yet!

CosyAcorn · 31/12/2020 09:09

Morning all,

Been thinking about my plan of attack, ready to start in earnest tomorrow. So far it is looking like this:

⚖ Weigh myself each morning.

👩Focus on one pound at a time. Whenever I lose a pound I'm going to take a happy selfie and set it as the background of my phone as motivation.

🥣 Less snacking and smaller portions

🍏 5 fruit and veg a day - I'm really bad at this Blush

🏃‍♀️ 20 min of exercise every day - running when it's dry, at home workout when raining

❤ Use this thread for support/motivation!

Bookaholic73 · 31/12/2020 09:36

Thanks @LightandAiry, I think I’m going for the versa 2, as it’s not too expensive.

OP posts:
Bookaholic73 · 31/12/2020 10:05

Love that list @CosyAcorn, here is mine.

I’m focusing on my carb and sugar intake, as I’m pre diabetic. I’m not doing low carb, I love sushi too much Grin but I’m focusing on reducing my bread intake and sugar intake.

Focusing on getting 30 mins of exercise a day, minimum. And 60 mins a day on weekends. Most of this will be walking the dogs I think.

Eating more veggies, as I love them.

Setting realistic expectations. 1lb-2lb a week is the recommended weight loss for long term sustainability, so that’s what I’m aiming for.

No alcohol. I want to go teetotal again, as I felt so much better, physically and mentally.

Have a great NYE everyone, we are having the last of the beers and cheese tonight, then going all in as from tomorrow!

Happy new year everyone! Bit of an odd one, isn't it? I am focusing on what I can change health/happiness-wise and kind of feeling optimistic for that at least. I know if I go out for a walk this afternoon I will feel better, and I want to make myself do that every day. Plus the sun is shining here.

Great to read everyone's plans. I hope we can continue to motivate each other Smile

ColouringPencils · 31/12/2020 12:41

Sorry I think someone up-thread was sending me a Fitbit message. I am new to this and don't know how to find you! Or is it a DM on here? I don't think I have that. My Fitbit is the Inspire, which I think is the cheapest one. I just wanted it to count steps, so it seems good for my needs.

Norwester · 31/12/2020 13:53

I find snacking when prepping dinner is my downfall, too. I've had good success with cutting up some carrots or cauliflower (or whatever veg you like) and snacking on that while I cook. Keeps me from eating the cheese instead! But you need to prep the snack veggies before anything else.

Norwester · 31/12/2020 13:54

Great list @CosyAcorn! Focussing on one pound at a time is a great idea - thanks.

ColouringPencils · 31/12/2020 14:36

Snacking while making dinner is definitely a downfall of mine too! Half the week DH makes dinner and on those days I don't eat anything between lunch and dinner. When I am in charge it is a different matter!

Just read this and thought of us www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2CLCkPmFQ7m8cHbDLbS7Wl4/willpower-is-not-the-key-seven-steps-to-creating-good-habits-that-last

LightandAiry · 31/12/2020 17:27

What a great idea - I'll try the carrots while cooking dinner

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 31/12/2020 21:23

That's a really interesting article @ColouringPencils! Especially the bit about making something intrinsically 'you' so you no longer think about it. Many years ago I had a DP who'd been brought up to think of himself as sporty, and he'd try any sport because to him it didn't matter if he was actually good at it, it was more that sport and fitness was what he did for enjoyment. I'd really like my DC to grow up with a similar mindset!

I found out today that a friend lost 3st last year! It happens to be her birthday today and she'd posted before and after photos on Facebook. I'm planning for that to be me next year (the weight loss not the photos!) Grin

ApolloandDaphne · 01/01/2021 08:28

Happy New Year to you all. I have weighed myself. I am 14st 4lb. I have never been this heavy ever. I was 6lb lighter last time I weighed myself which was on Dec 1st. I have gained 6lb in a month. Not good.

Out with alcohol, chocolate and other crap. In with proper healthy food. I don't plan to calorie count or anything to start with. I am also going to start doing yoga or Pilates again as they make me feel much better about myself.

Good luck to everyone starting out!

CosyAcorn · 01/01/2021 09:02

Happy New Year! Ok here we go.

Starting weight: 11st1

I'm the same, @ApolloandDaphne December has been a pile on right up until last night, I was demolishing salted caramel pretzels.

But today is a new day Grin

Plan today is move around lots; gonna take the decs down and go for a New Year's Day walk, and clean the house.

Good luck everyone whatever your day 1 plan is!

ColouringPencils · 01/01/2021 10:09

Morning, happy new year! I haven't weighed myself, going to try to avoid that although I may change my mind. Today is the start of WAVY for me:
Walk 10k a day
Alcohol free
Vegetarian
Yoga practice daily

Alcohol free is the big one for me, although I can also see myself struggling to do yoga every day. I think I need to schedule a regular time each day, but I haven't really worked out when that is. Maybe early evening, before dinner.

I am hoping that I will lose weight gradually and sustainably, but also that I will feel happier and healthier.

Good luck to everyone and their goals!

Tamtam86 · 01/01/2021 10:27

I've just weighed myself and I'm 11stone 5 Shock 5lb heavier than the end of Nov when I last weighed myself! Before having 2 kids I was always hovering around the 9 stone mark so I'm aiming to get back down to that.

So that's it, no more alcohol, chocolate or snacks! I'm not calorie counting but just trying to make lots of veggie packed meals.

I'm off for a power walk now, and then going to do some yoga.

Good luck everyone, we can do it!!

peachgreen · 01/01/2021 11:58

Morning all. Managed to maintain overnight despite a takeaway curry and two Baileys so I've ticked off the W of my WORK acronym and also the K. Heading out for a walk after getting my daughter some lunch.

Glenthebattleostrich · 01/01/2021 14:04

Good afternoon all.

Weighed myself this morning 14 stone 4lb.

First 2 miles of 2021 have been run.

I've fasted this morning and Will be having a lovely roast later.

My January aims are:

Keep calories under 1800.
Log food
Run daily
2.5l of water per day
15000 steps per day.

Good luck ladies!

SingToTheSky · 01/01/2021 16:20

Glen your name always makes me smile :o

Lost a post earlier thanks to my phone dying 🤬 basically I weighed in this morning for the first time in over a month I think, back up to 16st 5.9lb. That is still almost a stone lighter than I started last year, but I’m gutted because it’s over a stone heavier than my lightest which was sometime in summer. It’s really brought home how much I’ve struggled the last few months, motivation has been non existent.

Today was written off in advance, I always feel shit on New Year’s Day but this year somehow feels even worse thanks to the knowledge covid is going nowhere! So I’m taking a gentle start to the year. Setting up my bullet journal later today I hope, and embracing the imperfection that today has brought and the fact I really really needed to rest!

Loving all the acronyms!

LightandAiry · 01/01/2021 17:01

Hi everyone, Happy New Year. Things can only get better, car broke down and I fell over on some ice while teporting it to break down people! Then later DH got a take away and had to wait outside for ages - he spent the evening wearing his woolly hat underneath a duvet and fleecy blanket to warm up!

Today went out for a 4K walk, I may wrap up and go out after dinner for a New Year Christmas Lights walk to top up the moving more.

It's been a success so far with food - still full after a small jacket potato, generous portion of tuna and salad at lunch. My plan is to cut out sugar, cut down on carbs and increase protein.

Colouringpencils Thanks for the article interesting reading especially the habit forming info. One thing I do is take the stairs not the lift at work don't even think about it

Bookaholic73 · 01/01/2021 22:33

Good evening everyone!

Starting weight: 12st 12lbs. Yikes!

Today has been a good day. I’ve eaten well, but could have done more exercise (I didn’t even leave the house). So I’m definitely going to walk the dogs for an hour tomorrow.

Inspired by your ideas of cutting up carrots for snacks, I’m going to go food shopping for some veggies and fruit tomorrow. I used to snack on carrots and hummus all the time, so want to start that again.

My plan is to just eat less sugar, less bread, and more veggies. I want to reduce carb intake overall, but still allow myself rice and potatoes occasionally. I’m not going into this with an all or nothing approach, that’s why I’ve failed so many times before.

@ClaraTheImpossibleGirl I’d love to be posting before/after photos on Facebook this time next year!

@ApolloandDaphne I really want to start doing yoga again too, haven’t done it for years!

@CosyAcorn that sounds like a productive day! I took our decorations down a few days ago and everyone thought I was mad!

@ColouringPencils wow, those are great goals! I can only dream of walking 10k at the moment, I’m just aiming for 10000 steps, not K’s.

@Tamtam86 I love the idea of power walking! Mind you, my dogs pull so bad that every dog walk is like a power walk!

@peachgreen did you have a nice walk?

@Glenthebattleostrich what do you use to log calories/food? Well done on the run!

@SingToTheSky sorry you’ve felt a bit blah today. Well done for taking care of yourself and not overdoing it.

@LightandAiry oh no, are you ok? I hope you didn’t hurt yourself when falling over?
