Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

Morning all

Peachgreen I like the idea of 16:8 have tried before, some days I will be able to follow it. When I did it delayed breakfast until 10am then ate dinner early.

Flowers sorry to hear of your DH

GlenthebattleOstrich I'd like to be friends on Fitbit. I have done challenges before with another friend, they have goal days and just steps challenges. I also have a journal for the new year and I love your new year's resolutions!

Bookaholic73 This Girl Walks - I paid £18 and get a t-shirt at the end of January if I complete my challenge. I may up the amount of miles.

Hellswithbigbells I'm the same, have Quality Street on the coffee table (if it's not gone by the time DS goes back to uni I will sent them back with him!), also biscuits. Not easy with those around.

I am determined for health reasons to reduce my blood sugar - I am pre-diabetic - so that will mean reducing carbs. A few years ago I did lose 2 stone with some lovely people on Mumsnet (I just have to commit to keeping it off!), the only thing that really has worked is the support on here....we'll do it!

queentsumtsum · 30/12/2020 10:27

@Bookaholic73 and @ColouringPencils I'm doing Race at your pace. Costs £10 a month to sign up which gets you a medal and you can pay a bit more to get the compression top. I felt I needed something that I paid for so I would do it. I did December and signed up for 20 miles which I managed to complete so the next bracket is 35 miles which is January's target.

I don't drink much which means there's no easy cutting down on calories there but snacking is my issue. Often can't be bothered to make a proper lunch and end up snacking all afternoon!

@peachgreen so sorry to hear about your DH, this must have been a very difficult few months Thanks

Coconuttygirl · 30/12/2020 10:30

Thanks for letting me join! I definitely need the motivation from everyone on here.
I walk a lot (30,000 steps on the three days a week that I work) but I eat mindlessly which is my downfall.
I’ve tried 16-8, low carb, juicing etc and they work for a while and then I fall back in to munching whatever I want, whenever I want!

Hope you all have a good day. Am off out for a walk now!!!

Coconuttygirl · 30/12/2020 10:34

@peachgreen So sorry to hear about your DH.

Bookaholic73 · 30/12/2020 11:25

Good morning all, lovely to see so many of you joining in!

@Coconuttygirl that sounds like me, trying every diet. That’s why I need this way of eating, where I’m not cutting out anything, just reducing the stuff I know isn’t good for me, eating more of what is better for me, and moving my body more.

@LightandAiry I’ve joined that FB group, there are some lovely pictures on there! Thanks for telling me about it.
I’m pre diabetic too. My grandad and uncle both died of complications due to diabetes, so sugar is really something I want to stop eating.

@Hellswithbigbells welcome! I want to cut down on the alcohol too.

@queentsumtsum have you thought about meal prepping to avoid skipping lunch? I find that if I skip lunch, I always snack in the evenings as I’m hungry. Meal prepping is definitely the way forward for me, it makes it so quick and easy to throw lunch together.

@Glenthebattleostrich hi, great to see your goals! Good idea about the treadmill. I’d love to buy one but don’t have any space to put it in our house!

@Oops (for some reason I can’t tag you, sorry) cheese is my downfall too. I’m ignoring the Mexicana and Applewood in the fridge at the moment.

@Whyislifesohardsometimes that’s exactly the conclusion I’ve come to as well. Good luck!

@MrsMouse03 yeah that’s how I feel too. I really don’t even recognise myself in the mirror!

@ColouringPencils I’m doing dry January too. I did it ages ago and ended up not drinking for 3 years!

OP posts:
ColouringPencils · 30/12/2020 11:37

@Bookaholic73 wow, not drinking for 3 years post-Dry Jan is impressive! I think I thought I would last longer than I did last time, but started drinking again mid-Feb. I was kind of annoyed with myself as I knew I felt much better not drinking, but there are so many temptations and I found it hard to motivate myself after January was over. I can't decide whether to set myself a longer target this year or just do January.

Bookaholic73 · 30/12/2020 11:51

@ColouringPencils I’d like to quit drinking altogether again. I didn’t really feel any better physically, but as soon as drinking became a regular habit again, I definitely feel worse.

OP posts:
CosyAcorn · 30/12/2020 11:55

Can I join too please?

I also have about 2 stone to lose and love all the food. I'd really like to be able to fit in my clothes comfortably again - especially the bras! Blush

Planning on starting on the 1st Jan.

queentsumtsum · 30/12/2020 12:20

@Bookaholic73 yep, certainly thought about meal prepping, not so good at actually doing it though WinkGrin

Doesn't help that DH does all the food shopping and doesn't tend to remember to tell me when he's going and discuss what he's buying so I end up hunting through the fridge to see what we have and then can't be bothered. I'm also really bad for not taking a proper lunch break, I often have meetings across lunchtime. So lots of bad habits to break!

I'm intrigued by the instapot thing though. I have a fairly old pressure cooker and a slow cooker, do I need an instapot too??

Bookaholic73 · 30/12/2020 12:35

@CosyAcorn welcome! I’d love to fit into my bras properly too! It’s so horrible when they are uncomfortable isn’t it!

@queentsumtsum no you definitely don’t need an IP, it’s just a digital pressure cooker. Bloody brilliant machines, but I’m sure an old pressure cooker could do a good job.
I had a Pressure King Pro before my IP and it was shit in comparison, I adore my IP but it’s definitely not a ‘need’.

After an embarrassing amount of time which I probably should have used for something more practical (in my defence I had about 4hrs sleep last night 🙄), I have my acronym for 2021 😂

Water - I’m actually pretty good at sticking to water over other stuff, but I forget a lot and I’m definitely not hydrated enough
Active - I want to focus on being more active overall rather than big intense workouts - I want to take smaller opportunities to walk, use the exercise bike etc
Nutrition - food focus is to be on positive stuff, more vegetables and protein especially so there’s less room for simple carbs
Time - thinking about when I eat not just what I eat, fasting overnight and not constantly snacking

I like the fact it spells want because the other thing I need to be mindful of is always considering if I really want something before eating it, and really understanding my cravings eg am I wanting something crunchy for sensory reasons etc

Bookaholic73 · 30/12/2020 13:45

@SingToTheSky I love that! Your ‘Time’ section describes how I want to change my eating habits to a T.

OP posts:
SwankyPants · 30/12/2020 15:04

It love to join in after new year. I have diabetes and have been rubbish at being sensible.
Need to get my arse off the sofa and take control.
I have about 2 stone to lose and have done almost every diet out there.

Glenthebattleostrich · 30/12/2020 15:12

@Bookaholic73 I've sacrificed my crochet sofa bed to make space for the treadmill. It's here and I'm doing my first run on it later today! Even better DD is desperate for a go!!

@ColouringPencils They do lots of step ones, races, goal days (like those) and because i have premium they have bingo games and things which i think i can set up and invite non premium users to take part in.

I'll PM you both my username

ColouringPencils · 30/12/2020 15:16

Your WANT is great @SingToTheSky. I am quite jealous I have to do WAVY now, but I have already written it on the first page of my notebook in pink pen! Plus, changing my mind would be exactly the kind of way I would sabotage myself, so I will stay Wavy for January at least.

ZenNudist · 30/12/2020 15:23

Checking in but not starting until the Christmas food is used up. I have lots. I'm going to try and stay off the sweet stuff from 1 Jan. Also planning on low carbing.

I did dry January last 2 years and want to go for the hat trick but my weight doesn't really fluctuate so drinking less doesn't help. I'm hoping cutting out sugar will help.

I have just steadily got larger. I'm now firmly a size 12, eyeing up the 14 and at 5'3" I should be size 10.

I need to take up at home workouts as my swimming is going to be curtailed if we go into tier 4.

SingToTheSky · 30/12/2020 15:33

Aw thank you for the WANT praise ❤️ I am planning on doing all my bullet journal stuff one month at a time for the most part as I know I will struggle to keep things up long term. So I can always alter things as I find out what works and what doesn’t. And we have to go with what is best for our own individual circumstances - eg I wouldn’t do alcohol for mine as I don’t drink, not through any willpower or choice, I’m just a right fussy bugger and don’t like wine or beer or most spirits 😳 so it’s not something I think about.

I’m having quite a lazy day today, I feel like I’m really winding down for the end of the year and finishing up some books, online stuff etc for a nice fresh start on NYD. Lack of sleep catching up with me now and I nearly fell asleep listening to audible 😳 so I might try and have a nap!

Tamtam86 · 30/12/2020 15:48

Hi! I'd love to join you on this!

I'm 11 stone and want to lose 2 stone, basically baby weight that I never lost/replenished in lockdown! But I know that "diets" don't work for me because I just won't stick to it and really want to just make a long term change to eating more healthily, I know I need to stop drinking so much wine and snacking on chocolate!

queentsumtsum · 30/12/2020 15:49

@Bookaholic73 I'm slightly disappointed that I don't need the IP as I love a new kitchen gadget but my wallet is thankful Grin

Loving the WANT @SingToTheSky! But also loving @ColouringPencils WAVY. I need to put my thinking cap on to come up with my own acronym!

peachgreen · 30/12/2020 17:25

I'm using the app Habits and have come up with WORK for 2021.
W: Weight, either lose or maintain each day
O: Outside, get out and move my body every day
R: Read for pleasure every day
K: Do something kind for someone else every day

Not all weight loss related but all to improve my mood and general sense of self.

Glenthebattleostrich · 30/12/2020 17:48

@peachgreen I love that! Can I steal it?

Did 20 minutes on the treadmill to break in my new running shoes!

If anyone would like to add me on Fitbit my user name is MrsJeffercake

Bookaholic73 · 30/12/2020 18:17

@SwankyPants welcome! I need to get my arse off the sofa too, you aren’t alone!

@Glenthebattleostrich ha, that sounds like a fair swap, sofa bed for a treadmill Grin

@ZenNudist i need to get to grips with home workouts too. I actually bought one during last lockdown, so need to actually do it!

@SingToTheSky good idea about doing the bullet journal stuff 1 month at a time, much more manageable.

@Tamtam86 wine and choc are my downfalls too. I actually love healthy foods, but also love wine and choc too much!

@peachgreen love that WORK! Great way of keeping it fresh in your mind, having those words.

We are having a few beers tonight, while watching friends. I’ve kind of decided January 1st is when I start properly, as DH wants snacks etc for NYE!

OP posts:
peachgreen · 30/12/2020 18:32

Please feel free @Glenthebattleostrich!

LightandAiry · 30/12/2020 18:44

On a superficial note went for a walk with a friend and we did a selfie - I am looking forward to my face looking slimmer!

GlentheBattleOstrich I think I sent you a Fitbit friend request!
