Is anyone planning on losing weight in 2021, but without following any specific diet?

I’ve tried low carb, plant based, GI diets, sugar free...the list goes on.

But i know that for me, I just need to eat better and move more. I can’t imagine the rest of my life without rice/chocolate etc, and if my weightloss is going to be sustainable, it can’t exclude any food groups.

So my plan is to just eat less unhealthy foods, and eat more veggies.
I’m starting today, but am aware that others may want to wait till new year, that’s fine.

Anyone else want to join me?

How often do you all weigh yourself? I am trying to keep to once a week but the temptation to weight myself everyday is strong!

Wagsandclaws · 31/03/2021 21:22

Hello, may I join? I'm nearly my first week into eating less and getting used to a new medicine that I take for diabetes.

I need to lose 3 stone to take me from 13.7 3/4 to 10.7 And a bmi of 25 - something that I haven't had since I was 18 ( I'm 49 now )

I'm looking for some companionship on this final leg of my journey. 4 years ago I weighed 18.3 and slowly got 4.5 stone off. I've stagnated for the last 2 years and I'm feeling motivated to get the rest off now.

Thank you for having me :-) will read back now and familiarise myself with you and your successes!

KihoBebiluPute · 31/03/2021 22:16

@Wejustdontknow and @Wagsandclaws you are both very welcome. Thank you for joining us.

@bonfireheart I am trying to restrict myself to weighing twice a week. It's not rational to weigh much more often than that because the body fluctuates in weight quite a bit just randomly so weighing frequently just gives a lot of "noise".

CosyAcorn · 01/04/2021 08:14

Welcome @Wejustdontknow and @Wagsandclaws!

We tend to do a weekly weigh in summary on a Friday but not some people have weigh ins on different days. It's definitely a 'do what works for you're thread.

I give up on things really easily so I'm weighing myself daily. There is a lot of noise and fluctuations some week like Kiho said, but I find it helps me and sometimes there are nice surprises.

Like this morning, suddenly dropped to 9st12 despite spending the evening sitting round the fire in the garden drinking wine with our next door neighbours. It was utter bliss just sitting and chatting to other people!

bonfireheart · 01/04/2021 09:13

Thank you, I join in the Friday weigh in. Think it might not be a true reflection though due to being on my periods. Any loss will be great because I have been stuck at the same weight for ages.

@cosyacorn the gorgeous weather makes everything better doesn't it :)

Wejustdontknow · 01/04/2021 13:32

Thank you, @bonfireheart I can’t get along with gyms, I’ve joined before and never seem to motivate myself to go. Apart from when I started this week I don’t normally exercise at all but I do around 20k in steps on a work day which helps a lot.
I was going to weigh Mondays but will happily join the Friday weigh in, not expecting much this week as it will have only been 5 days.
I have eaten healthy today but not doing any exercise, youngest ds has been sent home from school as had a rash, I’ve just got in from work and dp has gone back to work after coming home for ds so I can’t go out for a run and I am a little achy after the exercise this week. I am also pretty hungry but trying to hold off and have an early tea rather than a snack

bonfireheart · 01/04/2021 17:34

@wejustdontknow the only way I can get through a gym session is to listen to podcast, preferably one that is 40 mins, it distracts me from the tediousness of a treadmill lol and is the only time in the day I get to myself!!
Sorry for hear about DS, hope he feels better soon:)
This is so boring but when I feel hungry I have a big glass of water and usually that works.

Wagsandclaws · 01/04/2021 18:01

I can join in the Friday weigh in. It's my weigh day anyway - tomorrow marks the first week of this sort of diet/different eating Ect so I'm excited to see what I've lost, I usually don't hold out a week but I'm making myself this time as it's quite disheartening to see the scales go all over the place.

I think I've done ok although I've been hungrier than other days.

I'm on Ozempic / Semaglutide which my endocrinologist consultant put me on. I have T2 diabetes which isn't very well controlled so he was hoping this would give me some good blood glucose levels again.

It makes me feel quite sick especially the early days after I've Taken the injection ( which is once a week ) , I'm due again on Sunday morning and it's beginning to wear off and I find that my appetite comes. back with a vengeance. Semaglutide can apparently also work well at suppressing your appetite, I certainly haven't noticed this today! I am hoping that the ozempic helps a little in my battle not to eat too much, it's primarily to bring down my blood glucose but that can be a side effect.

I have to go from the mid 13's to the mid 10's however long that takes me. I'm so happy to have others on the same journey :-)

I hope you've all had a successful day today, be that meeting your nutrition goals or just enjoying the fact that we are nearly at the bank holiday!

2lb lost this week, 1 stone 3lbs lost overall! Really pleased with that this week. DH said this week that he thought I was looking good and then quickly said, 'not that I thought you didn't look good before!' Grin Bless him!

I've got gardening/decorating ambitions this weekend that will hopefully keep my body moving enough to counteract all the Easter chocolate I intend to eat!

KihoBebiluPute · 02/04/2021 12:03

Well done @CosyAcorn that is really good going!

I am not doing so well:
My Friday weigh-in:
8th Jan 77.6kg (12st 3lb)
15th Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
22nd Jan 76.5kg (12st 0.5lb)
29th Jan 76.2kg (12st 0lb)
5th Feb 75.1kg (11st 11.5lb)
12th Feb 74.9kg (11st 11lb)
19th Feb 74.5kg (11st 10.25lb)
26th Feb 73.6kg (11st 8.25lb)
5th Mar 73.3kg (11st 7.5lb)
12th Mar 74.4kg (11st 10lb)
19th Mar 73.0kg (11st 7lb)
26th Mar 72.1kg (11st 5lb)
2nd Apr 72.3kg (11st 5.5lb)

So I have not succeeded in running off the excess calories I consumed last weekend. Ah well. And with Easter now, I don't think the coming weeks likely to be any better.

Exercise this week 5 runs totalling 42km. But there has also been wine, crisps, chips and cake so the lapse is hardly surprising.

Wejustdontknow · 02/04/2021 13:54

Friday weight in:
29th March 11 stone 6lbs
2nd April 11 stone 4 3/4lbs - 1 and a quarter lb loss in 5 days

I’m happy with that, it has only been 5 days and I have been very good. I’m still trying to find my feet with this healthy stuff so I’m still learning. I was due to do c25k today but I think it was way over ambitious of me to think I could get up at 4am for work, do an 8 hour shift in a supermarket which steps wise gave me 20k and then come home and go out exercising so I am going to stick to doing it on my days off/shorter work day which means I will exercise 4 days a week to start with.
I have stayed within my calories on mfp but as I left work today they gave me a bag of galaxy mini eggs for Easter and I got home and came on my period so I’m definitely eating them today and I have an Easter egg for Sunday so might not be as good on next weeks weigh in. I am not wanting any miracles though, a lb a week would be nice

bonfireheart · 02/04/2021 14:46

Weigh ins
Mon 29 March - 65.4kg
Fri 2 April - 64.2kg

I'm happy with that, any loss is positive and I'm going to slow and steady as expecting big losses before has always stopped me progressing.

Wejustdontknow · 02/04/2021 15:01

Any suggestions on some heathy and filling meals?
I always have granola with a sliced banana and milk for breakfast, either soup or omelette for lunch and have Greek yogurt and melon, apple slices with peanut butter and curly wurly’s as snack options. Just doing my online food shop and struggling for tea ideas. So far I have lasagne with veggies, Nando’s style chicken with sweet potato, corn on the cob, peas and coleslaw and fish with veggies so need another 4 tea options for the week. It’s hard trying to think of things that all the family will eat, ds2 basically has chicken nuggets for every meal but the rest of us normally have the same and I can just adjust mine to be healthier with more veg if needs be. I’m coeliac so cook everything myself so I can make sure it’s gluten free x

bonfireheart · 02/04/2021 15:17

@Wejustdontknow I've found the NHS app 'easy meals' useful, you can meal plan, shows you calories, it can also automatically add everything to a shopping list for you too.

I'm super-disorganised so order from Gousto!

Hits with DD12 include - Salmon, mash and veg / spaghetti bolognese / jacket potatoes / chicken fajitas / wraps/ any kind of pasta/ home made fish cakes.

Wejustdontknow · 02/04/2021 16:07

I would love to do gusto or hello fresh or similar but being coeliac I find the choices very limiting and never anything most of us would eat so just don’t bother, ended up with 2 fish teas, pork roast, lasagne, Nando’s, burgers and curry. I will try and add lots of veg into mine to make them healthier 🤞

Wagsandclaws · 02/04/2021 18:45

Friday weigh in

1st week 13.7,3/4 - 13.0

So a quarter of a lb shy of 8lbs this week, I couldn't ask for a better start!

I'm eating one meal a day and eating fruit and snacks with the other calories. ( approx 1200 ) I try to fast until 12 or 1pm but it's not a clean fast as I drink coffee or tea with a half spoon sugar and milk.

This coming week I'd love to lose another 2/3 and I will be massively on target for my first stone out of 3.

I'm not pressuring myself as I always fail when I do that. My daughter is getting married at the end of June and I'd love to look a little nicer in the photos as they are forever.

I'm also eating a couple of pro biotic yogurts a day as my stomach is constantly complaining one way or another. Once I've fixed the weight I'd like to fix the ibs really.

@CosyAcorn, @Wejustdontknow @bonfireheart
Well done on your losses! @KihoBebiluPute at least it's nothing significant - if you prepare yourself for the fact that you might stagnate for a few weeks it's not the end of the world.

I'm having a bloody big roast on Sunday, roast potatoes the works! I shall give the Easter eggs that Ds's have been given a serve though if I can.

Wejustdontknow · 02/04/2021 20:17

Wow well done, that’s a huge loss for your first week.
My period chocolate cravings have hit big time and I have just eaten two gluten free brownie slices. I have eaten pretty healthy the rest of the day and had a salad for tea so not the end of the world. My mil dropped the kids Easter eggs round and had bought me a box of brownies so I guess I should praise myself on only eating two of the five 😆

CosyAcorn · 03/04/2021 11:03

Congrats everyone on your losses this week!

I got up early today to go a walk with my Dad. Just did a few miles round the fields and I was back home for nine. Think it is going to become our regular weekend get together. Don't often get 1:1 time with him so it felt special.

I instantly undid any health benefits by cooking up a huge full English Breakfast when I got home. 😁 Now feel full, sleepy but content.

Healthy meal ideas- I'm sure my healthy meals actually aren't that healthy but here are some meals that feel lighter/healthier:

  • pulled pork in pitta bread with salad (instead of in bread roll)
  • prawns grilled in sweet chilli sauce with rice
  • roast chicken breast with lots of salad and new potatoes
  • swapping chips with homemade sweet potato wedges
  • chicken stir fry and noodles
KihoBebiluPute · 03/04/2021 11:08

My "rules" for healthier meals:
Only use spray oil, as little as possible
If cheese needed, limit to 30g per portion.
Double the veg and halve the carb in any recipe.
Serve onto a small plate, to help keep serving size low.

Wagsandclaws · 03/04/2021 11:26

Hey I agree completely! I think so called 'low fat' or meals marketed at being healthy are actually full of sugar to compensate and are really bad for you.

We had a bbq the other day and my daughter knows I'm trying to lose weight and said whisky we were in the isles ' low fat hummus Mum!' I was like ewww no! Absolutely not! Give me the oily sabra one any day, I'd rather have less of real food than more of sugary crap.

Good idea with the cheese, I weigh my potions too but have the real deal every time ( vintage crunchy cheddar ) same with upping the veg abs lowering the carbs, I love potatoes but I can manage perfectly well with 4 mini ones which weigh less than a bit all size potato.

The healthier meals suggested look good 😌 all normal food but healthy. I've never had pulled pork, must try that!

I'm going to make chicken skewers again today, Dh loves them and grazes on them if he's hungry, I'd rather that than biscuits 🍪 I'll make a pine nut & pesto pasta salad and have a tablespoonful with a few new potatoes and salad for dinner I think - I should make my own really but I'm mad about Sainsbury's fresh salsa and eat it by the pot load Blush.

I need to go for a dog walk this afternoon, I was up at 5.30 as ds 12 had a nightmare bless him and I couldn't get back to sleep afterwards so an early one for me tonight I suspect.

Hope you all have a lovely day - doing whatever you enjoy the most Smile

Wagsandclaws · 03/04/2021 11:26

**whilst not Whisky 🤣

CosyAcorn · 04/04/2021 08:49

Oh dear. Full English Breakfast + ate my weight in chinese takeaway = 3lb gain this morning.

Today's not going to be much better with it being Easter Sunday. But I'm just going to go with it. And get in the zone for Monday.

KihoBebiluPute · 04/04/2021 10:31

2 divine dark chocolate eggs and a hot cross bun so far. And not done any running since Thursday. But it's a special day and I put weight on over Christmas and have lost about 12lb since then, so I am going to try not to be too worried about the inevitable Easter blip and focus on the fact that if I buckle down after Easter is over I will feel back on track again in a few weeks. Will try not to go too overboard though.

Wejustdontknow · 04/04/2021 11:59

The meal ideas are all good thank you, I had a lazy morning with the kids whilst dp cleaned the kitchen 🙂 they did an Easter egg hunt then we all played a game on our iPads, I have just been out for a run so feeling good today. I will probably have some chocolate or finish off the brownies I was given today but I am doing a roast dinner and have been really good all week with filling half my plate with either salad or veg so lots of veggies for me today.
I love sweet potato so if we are having chips with tea I always have roasted sweet potato chunks/fries and I have started using spray oil recently
Have a great Easter everyone xx

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 04/04/2021 21:45

Just a quick catch up whilst the DC are finally asleep - it's been a really tough week (AF + school holidays) but on Tuesday the DC are a sports camp and DP is back at work, I can't wait Grin

Haven't weighed myself this week but probably just as well given the amount of chocolate I've eaten (AF was awful) and the fact that my main meals today have been hot cross buns Blush I've done plenty of exercise but need to encourage the DC to do a bit more to burn off some Easter chocolate!

Welcome @Wejustdontknow and @Wagsandclaws Easter Smile

Job hunting is on hold till I have a few hours to myself. @KihoBebiluPute I saw the job I applied for and have yet to hear back from advertised on another website, with an extended closing date - it looks like I didn't get it but no-one has - perhaps they'll have a rethink if they don't find anyone suitable by the deadline?!
