Hi! So during the first lockdown, i set up an instagram where I posted photos of every single thing that entered my mouth except from tea, and it really did discourage pointless snacking as I’d pop into the kitchen for a random biscuit but then I couldn’t be bothered to take a photo of biscuit as phone was in the other room, then I realised I didn’t actually really need the biscuit and back it went! It was super effective for a while and along with MFP I lost about a stone, but then I started to follow other instagram account and got some followers back and felt pressure to make everything look pretty, which meant I stopped posting absolutely everything so started having random snacks again, and have now put back on a few pounds! I tried setting up a new private instagram but wasn’t really that motivated! So I’m starting again but instead hoping a mumsnet thread will help!? Anyone fancy joining?!

I’m for a calorie deficit of around 500 per day, so eating about 1750-2000 and burning 2250-2500 (i have a fitbit alta which estimates total calories burnt). I walk a lot (1.5-2 hours a day with dog plus i walk to work) but am going to try getting into running again too! Trying to not be too restrictive food-wise as I’m having problems overeating by quite a bit some days! (when I don’t track while eating and then add up after I can easily put away 4000 calories a day without realising Confused )
I’m currently about 9stone (havent checked for a bit so possibly more!) and aiming for about 8st4.
So yes, please do join and we can look at eachother’s non-instagram-able food! Halo

Ps. a tip I never knew about MFP which makes life sooo much easier, is you can click edit, and check all ingredients for a meal if you’re batch cooking for example, then do ‘save meal’! Saved sooo much time! But maybe everyone knew this already except from me Grin

Todays food for me:
Breakfast: banana bread muffin, microwaved with frozen berries, biscoff spread, 2 crumbled biscoff biscuits (fully recommended, tastes like berry crumble!), 200g greek yoghurt mixed with cinnamon, plus a small mocha ~ 508 cals
Lunch: chicken paella leftover ~ 410 cals
Snack at work: Almond bounce ball - 158 cals
Snack after work: mini hersheys bar plus 2 mini cinnamon biscuits - 78 cals
Dinner: Vegan burger with cheese, sweet pot fries and salad - 800 cals
Lots of tea with oat milk! - 44 cals
Total cals: ~ 1954

Mid afternoon: natural yogurt, mango and muesli

Dinner: stir fried pork, broccoli, green beans and soja beans with basmati rice

Soja beans are really, really nice. I heartily recommend them if you haven't had them before. We get frozen ones but they come in tins too, although the tinned ones look less apetising to me.

Hi everyone,
Today’s food:
Breakfast: Coffee + teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of hot chocolate powder; porridge with berries, nuts and dark chocolate chips;
Snack: pop chips
Lunch: homemade soup + ryvita thins and garlic crackers;
Snack: 1 square dark chocolate; 1 square milk chocolate; Dairylea dunkers;
Dinner: Take away curry- King prawn tandoori masala, rice, vege stuffed paratha; poppadoms;
Dessert: 1 square of milk chocolate;
I know I’ll be hugely over my calorie allowance for today as I’ve not done any exercise but I’m ok with that as the take away was a really nice treat - I’m going to attempt a run tomorrow morning and try to stay reasonably healthy over the rest of the weekend 😬

Takeaway sounds amazing @raspberrypickle!! I was really craving indian earlier but can’t complain as we had fish and chips!
I’ve not been bothered to post past few days and will deff have been in a surplus as eating wasn’t very structured and I didn’t manage intermittent fasting, but today was better and I’m hopefully in a deficit to balance it out a bit as I’ve burnt just over 2900 cals from lots of walking and housework as I had a day off :)
Food-
Breakfast- almond milk mocha
Lunch- banana ice cream milkshake and half a slice chocolate chip banana bread
Early dinner- battered fish and mushy peas, had about 4 of DPs left over chips and a tiny bit extra fish (no photo)
Snack- fruit, nuts and dark chocolate
Snack- lemon Viennese swirl biscuit
Supper- salad with some chicken tikka and cream cheese

Hello all

Can anyone recommend the best app or whatever for calorie tracking? I now work from home and cook everything from scratch, as I love to cook, and sometimes the ingredients are not on my fit bit app. I don't want to get over obsessed with the numbers, but I would like to keep a better track.

As someone else said, I walk a lot, mainly at the weekends - covering 20 odd miles over two days in the hills, and find this seems to rev up my metabolism for several days. And then I am tempted to overeat. Portion control is definitely a problem. I live alone so that makes things even harder, as the temptation to go back for seconds is strong.

I so wish I could crack this once and for all. I have been gaining and losing the same four or five stone for decades, and have clothes of ever size in my wardrobe...

Perhaps I should start a separate thread about this, as don't want to hijack this one.

I've lost 25 pounds so far since last October ( it's been a very slow job) and have at least as far to go again.

Friedbanana · 13/03/2021 07:36

25 pounds since October sounds amazing @words!! I find my fitness pal good- you just add each separate ingredient from the recipe and input exact weight (I weigh everything using kitchen scales) then you click edit and select all, then ‘save as a meal’ , then you go to add food and for example if you’ve had a quarter, you put 0.25 of recipe. You don’t have to be super exact about portions because obviously you’ll be eating it all anyway, so if one day you have 0.3 and the other 0.2 it’ll even out. But you could weigh the portions if you like. I like to plate up my portion then put the extra portions in Tupperware and in the freezer, before I’ve sat down to eat my own, as then I don’t go back for seconds!

I’ve included a Screenshot of an example of a sweet potato chilli recipe I inputted- I never log the spices or anything as they’re negligible calories. A lot of people say it’s hard to log when you cook from scratch and I used to think it was a faff too until I found the save meals function. And even common food combinations I have, I save as meals to save time logging every time :)

Thank you @friedbanana! I will look at my fitness pal, and thanks for the tip re meals already prepared.

I really should weigh stuff I suppose but I resist it!

Words · 13/03/2021 08:49

Oh and straight in the fridge is definitely the way to go with leftovers, I agree. Grin

FatCatThinCat · 13/03/2021 09:41

It appears that I've managed to lose 0.4 kg this week, which is a bloody miracle as this has been my worst week so far. Lesson from this is that I need to be kinder to myself when it all goes wrong as it's not my fault and it's not necessarily a complete disaster.

Yesterday was another good day. I had:

Breakfast: peanut butter and sliced tomato on toast

Mid morning: banana

Lunch: Stirfried pork, veggies and rice

Mid afternoon: danish rye bread with boursin cheese (had to fight the cats for it) and an apple

Dinner: linguini with blue mussles

raspberrypickle · 13/03/2021 09:46

Hi @Words
I use the Fitbit app, I'll be honest I don't always log every single ingredient, for example if I've added onions or tomatoes to something as they are quite low in calories, I see it as more of a guide. I always make sure I accurately weigh high calorie/ carb foods as they have a bigger impact on the calorie intake for the day. The app remembers foods you eat frequently which makes logging things in quicker. Well done on your weight loss!

FatCatThinCat · 13/03/2021 09:48

Late snack: 1 homemade truffle which was like a little ball of heaven and a kiwi (no pic)

I watched The Truth About Sleep on the BBC yesterday and they said that eating a kiwi or two an hour before bedtime improves your sleep. This is because kiwis are naturally rich in serotonin. So I thought I'd give it a try and sure enough I slept much better than normal until 5.00 am and then I was tossing and turning. But will definitely be having another tonight.

That looks gorgeous, Fatcat!

Words · 13/03/2021 13:47

Well failed at first hurdle with MFP. Going through sign up from iPad there is a glitch - not displaying screen correctly so can't input my password etc.

Oh well!

Today I've had so far:
3 Brazil nuts and a date. Several gallons black coffee
Fridge salad - lettuce, red pepper, three olives, rare roast beef from m and s. Plus olive oil dressing

Dinner is loin of lamb, green veg, roast spuds and home made rhubarb crumble. With ice cream potentially.

Sorry no pix!

FatCatThinCat · 13/03/2021 18:50

I'm well chuffed with myself as I've managed to stay on track. I've noticed lately that I tend to slip at weekends, lack of routine, later nights etc. So today I've had:

Breakfast: nothing as didn't get up

Mid morning: danish rye bread with boursin cheese

Lunch: linguini with blue mussles

Mid afternoon: two truffles and a banana

My version of your user name would be fat cat fat cat very fat cat! Grin

Just stress eaten a Karg crisp bread ( instead of the other chocolate mousse) as I have realised I can track my food on the Fitbit app rather than mess with an additional one ( I know you can get them to link, but still.)

Double doh.
