Shorties trying to lose weight!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 29/09/2020 12:02

I started my fatbusting journey a couple of weeks ago and my plan is to document my progress here.

So far I've been doing a fair bit of cardio - 5 times per week - and I'm hoping this will help me get rid of some lbs. I posted a thread on AIBU looking for people's advice on only using exercise to lose weight but the general consensus is that no, I need to calorie restrict too. Boo! is what I say to that but maybe I need to face facts that I'm no longer a spring chicken and need to make a concerted effort with food too to shed anything!

Anyone want to join me?! @neverenoughchelseaboots

Current weight: 60kg/132lbs
Target: 50kg/110lbs
Height: 5'0 :(
Age: 39

I'm also back on my diet and afraid to weigh. Since I weighed on Friday morning I pigged out like nobodies business. It was like I was hoovering up all the last bits of treats before I knuckled down again. So I'm not sure what I am today, I'll hold off to Friday.

Here in Ireland we're back in the strictest lockdown which means my children aren't going back to school and our childcare arrangement is also cancelled. I'm so pissed off by all the people who couldn't control themselves over Christmas, gobshites! Now we all have to suffer.

And trying to work from home while looking after a 5yo and 3yo is nigh impossible, never mind dieting...I'm going to do my best though. Hopefully the numbers start coming down soon.

For the poster who was asking about good weight loss for a shortie, I agree with @Knittingnanny, 3lbs is a solid loss. I'm hoping to be 8st 7lbs by Easter.

I see UK are in the strictest lockdown now too. Commiserations to you all.

It's going to be so hard to do dry January (I was starting today).

Yes it will definitely be harder now. Not for me but for those of you juggling the children , work and caring for your own well being
My youngest local daughter is just weighing up whether or not to send her little one to her first day of nursery tomorrow. Doing that ( 2 days a week) would mean she won’t be able to mix with her bubble any more for a variety of reasons. My gut feeling is 2 days of nursery aren’t worth the support bubble she benefits from. But I’m not voicing my opinion of course unless I’m asked!

neverenoughchelseaboots · 04/01/2021 22:27

@SwimmingOnEggshells I'm exactly the same. I've had my head in the Christmas snack cupboard every 3 minutes! But I finished it all earlier so it's gone at last.

I'll definitely be heavier come Friday after that binge but I think a lot of it was the adjustment to dry jan so I'm not too worried about a couple of crazy days. Especially as the dry jan app says I've saved 2,300 calories already!

I could use the news as an excuse to have a glass of wine, but what I really know is that not being a bit blurry in the mornings will help be on top of things. So I'm sticking with it! 💪

MrsAvocet · 04/01/2021 22:37

I've had a bad day.
Firstly I was out volunteering at my children's school today and I didn't get lunch so I got in at about 4pm, absolutely ravenous. Naturally I went straight to the kitchen cleared out a couple of cupboards worth of sugary snacks within minutes.
Then after tonight's announcement I ate a large chunk of Christmas cake. I don't even really like it, but I had no snacks left that I do like so I was desperate.
Still, I won't be able to snack for the rest of the week as I've eaten everything now. Every cloud.....

WhistlersandJugglers · 05/01/2021 09:20

I had quite a few drinks last night. I have 3 teens and very bad broadband. The remote learning was a complete disaster last time around. I wish they'd just make a decision about the schools instead of driving everybody crazy with the dithering.
Ireland had the lowest cases of Covid in the EU in mid December but we're screwed now. People just went insane over Christmas. I'm totally pissed off with all the rule breakers too @SwimmingOnEggshells. We stuck to the rules and didn't see family or friends over Christmas but my kids get punished anyway.

cathyandclare · 05/01/2021 09:43

Very tough to stay on the straight and narrow after Boris's speech last night.

My kids are at uni and working, so no home schooling and I work from home usually, so I'm barely affected but I still HATE it. My heart goes out to those that are juggling relentlessly.

Chugging a coffee and trying to stay away from the sourdough toast. Have depuffed a bit since cutting back on carbs over the last few days - but there's a long way to go.

purplegirl13 · 05/01/2021 10:24

I am trying to work my way through some of the more calorific freezer meals whilst balancing with yogurt/fruit from breakfast, soup for lunch. Was pie and mash for dinner. yum

Am trying to just focus on balance now and not eat toast/crumpets etc when I'm feeling peckish. Have a strong affinity for carbs so am not ready to go carb-free but will reduce down bread/pasta in favour of rice/potato (in sensible portions)

SwimmingOnEggshells · 05/01/2021 21:14

Letting myself go too long between meals is always a big risk for stuffing my face with unhealthy food @MrsAvocet so easy to happen.

That's crap about your broadband @WhistlersandJugglers, lockdown is so unbelievably hard on young people. I work with young adults and I see it impacting them very badly. I'd say they miss their friends a lot. So many milestones have been missed for young people, it's very difficult.

So dieting-wise I'm doing ok. Im doing my own variation of 16:8 and not calorie counting which seemed to work before Christmas.

Last two days have been: skimmed milk cappuccino for breakfast, soup and one slice of brown bread for lunch and dinner in the evening. No snacks, no alcohol...no FUN.

I'm determined not to put on weight in this lockdown like I did the last. I'm hoping dropping alcohol will help keep my mood up during day too.

I hear you @WhistlersandJugglers. I've only got 2 teenagers at home but my DH works from home and we really only have good enough broadband for one video call at once - we can just about manage 2 if one person at a time switches their camera off . I have to more or less make an appointment to use the internet now.
I'm in danger of gaining again because of being stuck in the house and feeling stressed, especially over my son's A levels. I actually lost a lot over the last lockdown as the weather was good enoigh for long bike rides and walks, but right now we are surrounded by ice and its just not safe.
I'm doing a big Spanish meal for 12th Night tomorrow though but after that I am going to be strict with the shopping - if there's no rubbish in the house I can't eat it!

purplegirl13 · 06/01/2021 18:32

Another reasonably good day of eating, and went for a long walk (13k steps)

I'm on day 6 into 30 days of yoga with Adrienne. I gave away some chocs - I would have just eaten them for the sake of it rather than actually wanting them.

The plan is another 10k steps tomorrow, the more I stay in the harder I find it to motivate myself to go out and I can feel quite low so am trying to pre-empt this

purplegirl13 · 06/01/2021 18:34

I know the weight loss won't happen for a couple of more week but I'm trying to build good habits and better eaten and hope that I'll see a result further down the line. I've only ever successfully lost weight with calorie counting so am doing that to help raise awareness of what I'm actually eating

SewingWarriorQueen76 · 06/01/2021 18:42

I've started some of the Angie Fitness TV routines on YouTube. Definitely burns a lot of calories. Though weighing myself on the old Wii was frightening. It's so inaccurate it told me that I 'd gained 6lbs in my first week.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 08/01/2021 08:32

Morning all. Hope you've all had a decent week. It's hard to know what the benchmark is at the moment, maybe coping?

Pretty happy with a lb (well 0.9) loss this morning given I 'tidied up' all the Christmas chocolate on Monday and Tuesday.

I think the saves calories from dry jan has saved me (4,074 so far according to the app) and exercise has worked well.

I'm hoping the same regime next couple of weeks minus the chocolate should get me close to my 9 stone target earlier than the 1st March.

Start - 9st 10.8 lbs / 29% body fat
1st Jan - 9st 2.8 lbs / 26.6% body fat
Today- 9st 1.9lbs / 26.5% body fat

WhistlersandJugglers · 08/01/2021 09:57

I'm 10 and a half stone today. I don't think I really put on half a stone of fat in 3 weeks, I think some of it is bloating. I'm going to really cut down on bread and drink lots of water for the next week. I haven't been walking a lot either because of slippy roads this week.
My head hasn't been in the healthy eating game this week at all. On Wed the government said that Leaving Cert (Irish equivalent of A-Level) students could go back to school next week but then U-turned yesterday evening. It's head wrecking for everyone.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 08/01/2021 11:12

I'm so weak, caved on my dry January last night and had two drinks. Pathetic. Then I ate loads of Wensleydale:( but I weighed in at 9stone, 1 1/2lbs this morning. Still 1/2lb over my pre Christmas weight. Back on the wagon today!

OP posts:
neverenoughchelseaboots · 08/01/2021 12:00

As they say @SwimmingOnEggshells think of all the days you did manage as the success rather than the day you didn't as the failure.

I had a wobble earlier thinking what harm would a bit of wine be on a Friday night? But then thought that a) I probably wouldn't even enjoy it knowing I'd pledged not to and b) if I want to see a true reflection of the difference it makes to weight loss I need to have had a clear run with no wine or Christmas chocolate this week.

I'm going to need a lot of resolve later I think.

Half a pound is impressive! I'm still 2lb above my ( already too high) pre-Christmas weight and I've already lost 4.5lb!!!!
purplegirl13 · 08/01/2021 14:31

I've resisted the wine the last couple of days with the promise of opening a bottle tomorrow, doing my best to stick to 1 bottle a week (dry Jan isn't realistic for me). I don't do well restricting something completely (unless it's forever)

had a medical appt yesterday that meant no food for 6hrs beforehand so had a very light lunch (at nearly 3pm) and dinner which means I've got extra kcals to play with - will used for the wine and working my way through some leftover party food in the freezer. I know I could not carry them over and be in a higher deficient but small steps

Morningmaeve · 08/01/2021 19:27

Hello all - I am 9 stone 5lb today, which is a lb down. Almost certainly due to Dry Jan so I will do my best to carry on though I have to admit lockdown + Dry Jan is not a great combo...

Knittingnanny · 08/01/2021 20:26

Well I thought I’d developed some sort of intolerance to chocolate but my brain doesn’t seem to realise. I’ve been eating from the last tub if Christmas chocolate without paying attention. I’ve just counted the wrappers and have consumed an extra 400 calories in one half hour episode of Corrie
So cross with myself

cathyandclare · 09/01/2021 11:37

First weigh in and have just nipped under the 9 stone mark. I'm low caring, so it's nearly all fluid but I feel a bit better and less binge-y, which is a bonus! DH has done a sterling job of finishing off all the Christmas treats, annoyingly his waistline never suffers.

cathyandclare · 09/01/2021 11:38

I'm low CARBING and very much high on caring!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 09/01/2021 11:41

Thanks for all the support everyone. This thread has been great at keeping me motivated :)

well done @cathyandclare, it must be so nice your weight beginning with an 8!
