Shorties trying to lose weight!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 29/09/2020 12:02

I started my fatbusting journey a couple of weeks ago and my plan is to document my progress here.

So far I've been doing a fair bit of cardio - 5 times per week - and I'm hoping this will help me get rid of some lbs. I posted a thread on AIBU looking for people's advice on only using exercise to lose weight but the general consensus is that no, I need to calorie restrict too. Boo! is what I say to that but maybe I need to face facts that I'm no longer a spring chicken and need to make a concerted effort with food too to shed anything!

Anyone want to join me?! @neverenoughchelseaboots

Current weight: 60kg/132lbs
Target: 50kg/110lbs
Height: 5'0 :(

Morning all. I was 9st 5.5lb last week and 9st 6.6lb this week. But I was expecting more like a 9st 8lb because I always weigh heavier when it's period week. So I'm not logging it but weighed for routine.

Now, I've been craving a Big Mac for the past 24 hours (I bet it's that damn ad on here) and am having a rare day working in the office today so may go and treat myself. I've had a good week with two great runs and a body pump session and I think it's good to have the odd treat.

I've probably had meat half a dozen times this year, so it really will be an event!

MrsAvocet · 13/11/2020 11:44

Well much to my surprise I've lost 0.5kg this week. Down from 51.6 to 51.1kg despite not having been terribly good this week. Bit of good news in an otherwise rotten week. My 50kg target is in sight now, if I can just shift this last few pounds. Though really I should be around 47/48kg, 50kg is a nice round number and it felt like an impossibility when I started the year just shy of 70kg. I reckon I will finish the year over 20kg lighter than I started it which is a decent achievement.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 13/11/2020 11:47

I heard you have to be careful with trackers @Beroltheperil as they can over-calculate your calories burned which is a bummer.

I had a very good week food-wise but only down 1/4 lb and my knee is now sore from my exercise bike. Feeling pretty pissed off to be honest but I'm going to carry on regardless. Giving up certainly isn't going to help me lose weight. I think the reason my knee is sore is because my right quad is insanely tight, I'll foam roll and I've applied voltarol so hopefully that helps.

I just wonder about the medication I came off. I read such mixed reports online about weight gain; some say they can lose weight no problem and then others seem to work really hard and nothing seems to budge.

In any case I think it can take up to 45 days to fully leave your system depending on how long you've been on it. I was on it nearly 2 years so maybe I just need to be patient with myself.

Today: coffee, boiled egg for lunch, dinner is rice with veg and prawns. I will have a couple of drinks tonight but I'm going to choose a whiskey which I just have with water rather than wine. I find it hard to stick to just one glass of wine!

Have a lovely weekend shorties and wishing everyone the strength not to over-indulge!

@MrsAvocet I've just converted your kgs in stone and pounds that I can relate to. OMG! Not a decent achievement- an absolutely brilliant one.

WhistlersandJugglers · 13/11/2020 13:18

I lived like a monk for the week-long walks, porridge, soup, early nights. I did lose a pound but I think for my effort the universe should have made me magically slim again.
This perimenopause/middle age thing is a pain in the ass.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 13/11/2020 15:28

@MrsAvocet Half a kg is brilliant! Over a lb isn't it? 2.2lbs to a kilo if I remember correctly.

@WhistlersandJugglers 1 lb is brilliant! Imagine if you lost a lb every week for the next year? There'd be nothing left of you!

Thanks all. I'm quite pleased, after a rotten week. DH has just suggested fish and chips tonight and was going to say no but decided a treat was in order.
If I behave myself I should dip under 8 stone next week, for the first time since before I was pregnant with my now 15 year old son. Grin
It's quite refreshing to be able to write that on this thread without someone telling me that I must be anorexic or something!

modernfemininity · 13/11/2020 19:20

Enjoy those fish n chips! @MrsAvocet
You have done so well. Losing 20kg is Poster Level Loss, and is a brilliant achievement!!!

Can we keep talking on here after Christmas- I am going to need continued encouragement I think!

I am just ahead of you in absolute weight, and on the dieting curve, but you should note that I am very tiny framed. I am finding it very hard to lose more than a tiny amount per week now. I hope to at least stay at today’s weight until my Monday’s weigh in and that would be a tiny 100g loss in a week. But in a sense that is good because I am practicing what maintenance would be and understanding that I need to rewire my thinking about portion control. I too want to get to under 50kg and I am currently under 51 (at 50.3 this morning... but we’re heading into the weekendGrin).

A few months ago I did take on board that my portion should be only 2/3 of my husbands. Previously we would have a pie each!

modernfemininity · 15/11/2020 17:32

We’ve a teen away at college and it is their birthday. Scuppered by lockdown, to see them and treat them we had fish n chips (as well!) on the beach followed by gateau! Soo full and not in the diet plan.

Morningmaeve · 16/11/2020 08:24

My weekend contained wine, pasta and pizza. I can see the pattern now - week goes well and then I undo all the hard work at the weekend.

NearWildHeaven · 16/11/2020 09:27

MrsAvocet that is amazing! Well done!

Right I'm going the wrong way so I need to give myself a kick. I am actually going to have to put a bit of effort in here.

Starting today, back to using MFP and looking at portion size. And no wine until Friday.....

Knittingnanny · 16/11/2020 10:23

What scales are you using for such accuracy and recording small losses?
I’m short and trying to get back to pre pregnancy weight ( I’m 64!!!!!) for the health of my knees
Not too much to lose but of course being short (5’2”) doesn’t help does it!
September 1st 10st 3 or 5 depending on whether I stood on analogue or digital scales
Today 9st 5/7 depending on the scales again
Would like to be just under 9 at but ok with 9.2 ish
Well done everyone

neverenoughchelseaboots · 16/11/2020 10:52

@Knittingnanny I bought these ones. They're consistent and all gets sent via Bluetooth to an app with good tracking, graphs abs stats. Also that app syncs with the Fitbit app. I'm really happy with them.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 16/11/2020 11:13

@Morningmaeve my weekend also included all those things! But...I'm trying to go for the strategy of weekends can be fairly normal as long as the weekdays are good enough to give a net effect.

My progress will be slower and if the downward trend stops I'll have to be stricter but that's what I'm working to at the moment.

I'm also very grateful that that my weekend badness is only wine and maybe heavier meals. I don't have a takeaway or snack habit to kick luckily.

Knittingnanny · 16/11/2020 11:52

Thanks for the recommendation I will have a look at them

Morningmaeve · 16/11/2020 12:40

I agree with that strategy @neverenoughchelseaboots but I definitely went too far the other way this weekend! Overall I am happy with where I am though - 9 and a half stone feels much better than 10 stone. Going to really focus for the rest of the week in hopes of a small loss but will settle for maintaining.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 16/11/2020 14:22

This is actually probably my first weekend of not over-doing it and undoing all my good work. No snacking, no take-aways and only a little bit of booze (this is my biggest weakness which for many reasons I need to cut down, not just calories...but that's for another thread...).

I didn't exercise because of my knee so I'm sure I was in maintenance territory. Going to try and get back on the bike again tomorrow because it's feeling a lot better now. I have a TENS machine and it seems to have worked out all the tightness down my thigh which is great.

That scales looks amazing @neverenoughchelseaboots! I'd be very tempted but I have a relatively new Salter digital one.

Well done on the loss @Morningmaeve 1/2 stone is a big deal for us little 'uns!

And welcome @Knittingnanny

Slight name change for me from @WhistlersandJugglers. I had an OK weekend but am feeling out of routine today as I usually get out for a walk every day but we have flood conditions here. Definitely aiming to maintain my just-under- 10-stonedness as the week progresses. This thread has been great, we're nearly a month into full lockdown here and at this stage of the first lockdown I was over 10 and a half stone.
Flowers for all my fellow shorties.

neverenoughchelseaboots · 16/11/2020 18:20

Totally agree @Whistlers20. I've just started running (I look like Phoebe from friends but hey 🤷🏼‍♀️)

I just did 5k 💪 which for me is brilliant. I wouldn't have pushed myself that far before, but because I have the accountability of this thread I did it!

Knittingnanny · 16/11/2020 19:26

I’ve read somewhere that for every pound you lose it takes 3 pounds of weight off the knees so that is my motivation as I have arthritis ( from spending 40 years on the floor teaching infants my doctor says!)
I can tell you that although the weight comes off slower at my age, the actual process is a hundred times easier when you get to the point in your life when you are not feeding little open mouths all and every day!
So much easier to stay on track. I have noticed that on the days I do baby and child care I eat far more, mainly without realising. So well done all of you actively parenting mums.
My calculations show I can only have 1400 to maintain weight so going down to 1000 is the only way for me to lose weight, about 1/2 lb every ten days approx.

modernfemininity · 16/11/2020 19:57

Well done doing 5k @neverenoughchelseaboots . I never run so I, for one, am very impressed.

@Knittingnanny You have quite a low calorie intake planned. You’ve done well losing a stone already so you know what to do. Good luck.

I weighed in this morning at 400g heavier. It is only right - I knew I would gain after the weekend. I have been fairly good today and achieved the 16:8 and had a veg based main meal. I fancy a Wine but will stick to tea. I am a bit bored of dieting and need to be encouraged again by seeing a dip in the scales!

Knittingnanny · 16/11/2020 21:31

It does get boring doesn’t it?
I don’t drink alcohol but can eat chocolate and crisps by the shed load.
The only way to increase the calorie allowance is to up the exercise I know, but my poorly knees limit the length of a daily walk to about 1/11/2 miles max. They are my focus for losing weight, to keep being mobile and active for a good few years yet.
I can do it for a while but then need to have a few days off and have a pig out.
Plan to diet til Christmas Eve and hopefully be almost down to 9 st so I don’t start yet another diet on jan 1st
I do feel much better health wise at 9
Can’t believe me and my friends used to think we were fat at 8 at 4 lb in the seventies!

Whistlers2020 · 16/11/2020 21:32

It's definitely harder to lose when there are kids around, @Knittingnanny. My house is always full of food and there are teenagers in and out making snacks all evening.
I wish I had more willpower.

Beroltheperil · 17/11/2020 07:57

Hello

Checking in after a weekend of treats...went away to the mountains and ate fondue, drank a ton of wine but did do some hiking...nowhere near enough to make up for the extra calories though!! I'm getting back on track now and the next few weeks are quiet so I'm looking forward to feeling lighter and more in control.. But it was an amazing weekend and I'm well aware of how lucky I am to be able to get away.

Welcome @Knittingnanny !!! You're doing amazingly well!!

Keep going everyone. We can all tweak our weekends slightly to avoid undoing the week's work, I know we can.
