I don’t even recognise myself

In the past year (since getting married) I’ve gained about 3 stone.
I know exactly why, we went from being quite active to sitting in front of the TV most evenings and weekends, eating shit (chocolate etc).

We went out to a friends post wedding garden party this weekend (Social distanced) and when I looked at photos on Facebook I was MORTIFIED.

I know I’ve gained weight, but how did I not know I looked like that??
I didn’t even recognise myself!

So, today is Day 1 of ‘Bookaholic Gets Buff’ and I’m looking for support, advice, fellow ‘Buffers’ who would like to join in etc

I am quite active, although you wouldn’t believe it by looking at me. So it’s mainly diet I need to improve.

I’m 13st and a size 18 Blush
I’m aiming for 10st.

OP - can I persuade you to take a look at the before and after stories in a FB group of intermittent fasting. Delay Don't Deny. 16:8 is the starting point. It's inspiring. I've been following a clean fast for 7 weeks and have never felt better. It's called the health plan with weightloss as a side benefit due to anti-aging cell renewal that takes place when fasting overnight. I have done keto in the past, so it was probably easier for me but I wish I had known this 10 years ago.

Book I have an amazon version of an Apple
Watch! It was £34! You get the VeryFitPro app on your phone.
Can log steps and HR and sleep. Also can track exercise too.
It also shows your messages etc.
Only difference if you can't reply via the watch but at 1/8th if the price I can make my peace with that Grin

itsgettingweird · 22/06/2020 19:57

Make yellow and orange peppers are sweet! Or what about making ice lollies from fruit and OJ? They take a long time to eat so I find they work on cravings

Fi57 · 22/06/2020 20:00

Can I join please, I’m 63 and since the menopause iv slowly gained at least 3 stone☹️ I’m 5ft 4in and weigh 12 1/2 stone😳 I’m actually very active (have 2 big dogs to walk 3 times a day) and I’m pretty good at eating healthy, unfortunately I like a glass or 3 of wine!

anxietrist · 22/06/2020 20:44

Can I join please? I've got about 1.5 stone to lose. I'm at that point now where I'm really aware that I've gained weight am my comfy clothes are feeling tight!

WannabeJolie · 22/06/2020 20:54

I’m in. I need to shift at least 5 stone. I feel awful and my body is knackered and tired from carrying all the extra weight.

Bookaholic73 · 22/06/2020 20:56

@Makemedoit I’d like ideas for sweet things too. Everyone suggests fruit, but that doesn’t cut it for me. I think I just need to cut out all sweet tasting things to just overcome that desire.

@JustAPassingFashion I HATE exercise too, but ADORE surfing and tennis. I tried every exercise use going until I found these, so I advise trying all the exercise, even the ones you think you’ll hate.

@OrlandoInTheWilderness of course, the more the merrier! Well done on the c25k!

@DianaT1969 because of my hypoglycaemia I can’t fast, I end up having attacks. I’d love to do Keto again, but I can’t eat dairy and eat mainly veggie. Makes it so difficult.
I do like how I stop craving sugar on a Keto diet though.

Oooh can I join you please? Also have 3st to loose Confused

Mojitomogul · 22/06/2020 21:19

I need to join :( am 5ft5 and last weighed 12 stone 3, I want to be 10 stone. Today I have eaten avacado on toast for breakfast, scrambled egg and bacon for lunch, and salmon, rice and salad/toms/beetroot for dinner. I've had two coffees and a tea and orange juice. And a homemade espresso martini and three bits of terrys chocolate orange. I walk the dog daily and do yoga. I think it must be my alcohol intake that's doing me in as I have drunk something every day since lockdown.

Screenburn · 22/06/2020 21:24

Hello all, can I join? I keep halfheartedly saying I’m going to lose some weight but I never stick to it - maybe some buddies would help.

I’m quite tall and am always told I ‘carry weight well’ but truth is I’m obese and have 30kg to lose. The weight is coming off very slowly after a fortnight of cycling for half an hour every day and drinking more water. Not quickly enough for my liking though so I’m worried I’m going to end up giving up again.

Bookaholic73 · 22/06/2020 22:10

@SmiledWithTheRisingSun, yes please join! You have the same amount to lose as me.

@Mojitomogul I think my alcohol consumption is partly to blame too.

@Screenburn I often say I’m losing weight and then don’t. Your cycling seems to be doing well!

It only takes about 10 days to retrain your tastebuds. I went from 4 sugars to none in coffee. After a fortnight I tried it with 2 sugars. WAAAY too sweet. Undrinkable. It was years ago and I've never gone back.

Bookaholic73 · 22/06/2020 22:20

@Eckhart yes I think it’ll be a pretty quick transition. Or at least I hope so.
Did you cut out all sugar?

I'd also like to join, if you'll have me! I lost a stone earlier this year with WW, but have put most of it back on over lockdown. I have about 3 stone to lose. I don't have a sweet tooth, but I'm an absolute fiend for bread/ butter/ wine. They are my downfall! Blush

I work really well with keto stuff - lost about six stone doing Atkins 5/6 years ago. I'm pretty inactive (in part due to a health issue), and managing weight mainly with diet appeals, as it means if I go though a flare I don't have to give it up. But could someone explain the fasting thing? Do you do it every day?

I struggle quite a bit with having things in the house that I shouldn't eat/drink... but DP is naturally lean, and I have no intention of forcing him with me on a keto journey - my grumpiness will be enough for the both of us! Grin Does anyone have any suggestions for how I keep my hand out of the proverbial cookie jar without eradicating all carbs from the house?

SierraOscar · 22/06/2020 22:25

I'll join you. I have at least 3 stone to lose. If I lose 3 stone I'll be 10 stone which is the top end of ideal weight range.

I'm my own worse enemy and lack motivation. I have paid to join the 90 day body coach plan. I need someone to tell me what to do everyday.

Today I have been greedy and has a chocolate muffin, I was sitting in a friends wall having a socially distanced cuppa and she gave me the muffin. I'm just to weak to say no.

Pikachubaby · 22/06/2020 22:27

You mention tennis and surfing. Tennis is ace (pun intended Grin) for burning calories and releasing happy hormones during and after

Try and play as much as possible!

Surfing is great too (but harder to organise as a regular activity )

Keeping active is key, imo, as you are out and about and busy and not thinking about food

I often do evening walks with friends in summer. Cheap and cheerful and very low cal fun

Eckhart · 22/06/2020 22:29

Not at that point, but I have since. I have the occasional relapse, but I don't really worry about it. My consumption is massively down and it's now the odd treat it's meant to be. Carbs are sugar, so they went too.

MrsTolerance · 22/06/2020 22:50

Can I join please? Size 18-20 and sick of wearing the same leggings/baggy t-shirts every day instead of the nice clothes sitting in my wardrobe. Sitting at home glued to the laptop all day is not helping matters

Murrfect · 22/06/2020 23:00

Ok my last fish n chips on the beach for a while, poached fish n salad from now on.

So I’m getting up earlier tomorrow and then doing cardio plus yoga (Since lockdown I usually do yoga for 15-30 mins which has made a huge difference) and a long walk in the day. 16/8 with reduced carbs n no snacks - no three slices of pear n banana cake that doesn’t count cause it is homemade.... n MFP 1400 (going to gradually reduce to 1200)

*grits teeth

Two questions I’d love to do C25K but after a few runs I get a terrible backache between my shoulders - why? I wear a good sports bra sometimes two, can anyone recommend anything? Why do I get such a bad back :(
And does milk in coffee count as breaking 16/8?
I’ve googled both but just never get a proper answer really

I’ve just got to stop thinking that malteaser Is ok, until I start slimming down

@Bookaholic73
thanks for starting this thread I’d say cheers 🥂 but... maybe in a week or so :)

Murrfect · 22/06/2020 23:03

@MrsTolerance it is being stuck at the computer! There’s always just more to do since wfh.

unstableunicorn · 22/06/2020 23:10

Another one looking to join if you'll have me! Actually cried yesterday after treating myself to new clothes which didn't fit, have gone from a size 12 to 16 in a short span of time and feel awful. Have also become so unfit, so I'm curious about c25k. Doesn't help that I've got a very sweet tooth and no willpower/motivation, hopefully this thread will help!

duddle · 22/06/2020 23:31

Can I join too please? I recently went up to size 18 clothes and I am only 5'2Confused I am absolutely mortified it has got this far and really need to lose some weight so some encouragement and company to sort this out would be amazing.

JustMoved123 · 23/06/2020 04:03

Hi, can I join please? I’d love to lose 3st but anything would be a bonus right now! I’m also older at 55 and think menopause has made it a lot harder though I’ve been trying to lose 1-2 stone all my life, now it’s 3!

I love wine and snacks and they are my biggest downfall so now trying 16:8 with keto, day two and I’m hungry!
