Anyone starting tomorrow and not planning a ''quick fix''

Hello!

I have gained a shocking amount of weight and absolutely need to regain control of myself.

I do not need another drop-some-lbs-quickly-to-look-lovely-in-my-new-frock-diet. I think it is more serious than that for me now and I need to completely transform my relationship with food, as it has obviously become unhealthy.

I have come crawling back to dieting, (and to MN), to hopefully find some weight loss buddies.

I am planning to do the "No S Diet". The rules are:

  1. No sweet treats
  2. No second helpings
  3. No snacking between meals

Except on "S" days; Saturdays, Sundays and Special Days, (birthdays, Christmas etc).

On "S" days, the theory is that you stick to your three, square meals and also have a special treat or two over the weekend. It isn't that you can then eat a whole tub of ice cream every weekend or anything.

It is meant to be a lifelong plan, (aren't they all?), not a quick fix. So I am not expecting rapid weight loss. I honestly just need to stop gaining at such an alarming rate. Even if I stay as fat as I am, (and I am quite fat), I could live with it, but the rapid weight gain has scared me tbh! I have gained approximately two stone in less than a year SadBlushConfused. Two years ago, I had a normal BMI and I'd just had a baby. Now, I am on the cusp of obese.

I am circa 14 stone, (a few lbs under), and need to be circa 11 and a half stone. At this point, I'd settle for anything under 13! I am 36.

Would love some company Smile.

I've been not having a great day, just very hungry between meals. I really need to plan my snacks better so I don't have "just a bit more".

2020in2020 · 26/06/2020 08:09

Hello everyone, just checking in. I’m now on Day 4 of sticking to Slimming World, no cheating!

Feel good but I know the challenge will be the weekend. DH and I always end up saying “do you want a drink tonight?” to each other around 4pm on a Friday... got to stay strong. To make sure I stick to the plan I have told the DD’s we are having fajitas tonight, they get really excited so I can’t backtrack, serve them beans on toast and order pizza when they are in bed which is what we usually end up doing Blush

BurtsBeesKnees · 26/06/2020 08:09

I'm really struggling to think of what to eat in this hot weather. I usually have salad for lunch with some protein of some sort, I'm kind of saladed out now tho, so don't want it for tea. Ended up having potatoes wedges (just cut up potatoes oven baked) with baked beans last night

WhistlersandJugglers · 26/06/2020 10:07

I'm 1lb down since the weekend. It's not the world's most impressive start to a diet but it's going in the right direction and I haven't done any exercise in the heat so I'm happy enough.

LadyPrigsbottom · 26/06/2020 12:03

Well done whistlers! I would take that. Better than a gain!

I've been out and ventured into a coffee shop for an almond milk iced latte this morning. That and some strawberries has ended up being my breakfast.

Not sure what to do for lunch. Today is dc1's half day at school so I'll be doing dcs lunch as well. Not sure what to make, but will come up with something.

It's weird; it's meant to be 27 °C here today and I'm in jeans, but I feel less 🥵 than yesterday. Clearly, I've somehow shed a stone overnight, so less insulation 🤣. Ok, maybe not.

A quick check in as I've struggling. I am eating healthily - salads and soups but then adding a tonne of crap like crisps or ice cream.

Anyway I was flicking through tik tok yesterday (I know I'm a woman in my 40s who doesn't let her children go on it) and I saw a quote from someone that it takes 21 days to develop a habit and 90 days to develop a lifestyle. It struck me that I have picked up some good habits recently - I am eating a wider variety of healthy foods and drinking more water. So as I said above I am picking up healthy habits just not ditching the unhealthy ones. I'll just keep at it. I might even weigh myself tomorrow and start on my fitness pal.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/06/2020 15:32

If it's ok if like to join...
46.
Used to maintain low 12 stone without thinking about it. Put on new meds and put on a stone I then struggled to lose...failed.
Then lockdown inactivity and food has meant another stone.

I'm the heaviest I've ever been 2 weeks ago. I've list q couple of pounds (probably from the shock of seeing 14.4 on the scales) but it's not.going to lose itself.

Dd had just treated us to.aftermoom tea so realistically I'm starting properly on Monday when it's also back to work in my classroom with kids for the first time in 14 weeks. Eeek!
I have a calorie counting app but refuse to pay the cost so have bought a food journal to keep track of my cals for the next 12 weeks or more.

butidoloveyou · 27/06/2020 16:31

@StealthNinjaMum I think that's a good way to think of it, making small changes that in the long term will make a difference.

I'm really struggling at the moment. I just can't seem to get into the right frame of mind at all. I seem to have maybe one good day where I make healthy choices and feel so much better for it and then many bad days in between. I'll actually eat until I feel sick. And I know it's emotional eating, I'm not even hungry most of the time.

Hi @DrMadelineMaxwell. Lockdown is definitely making it harder! Do you find as well that usually in the classroom you'd do a lot of steps? I always found that I did so maybe that's contributing too, I'm probably moving less than normal!

LadyPrigsbottom · 27/06/2020 16:52

Welcome @DrMadelineMaxwell Smile!

I am struggling today too. This is going well isn't it 😂? Comfort / emotional eating. I haven't stuck to it properly this week. I think my mistake may be having meals which are, (don't laugh Grin), too low calorie, so I end up snacking on junk.

I'm going to try and do some batch cooking, or just some decent meal planning, this weekend, so that I can have healthy meals sorted.

I had a sneaky peak at my weight this morning and I'm exactly the same as I was at the beginning

I might start weighing monthly, as I'm not planning quick weight loss, but a total lifestyle overhaul, so weekly weigh ins might not be a good plan for me.

Sorry to hear others are struggling too. Bloody food. Why is something so natural, such a massive issue?

Anyway, I never thought it would be easy or a quick fix, so my motto today is that it's a marathon, not a sprint. Maybe more like an iron man actually...

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/06/2020 17:18

Thanks guys.
Yes, I've gone from easily clocking up 7 or 8000 steps a day in my classroom to barely 2000 and sat at a computer all day, so I will be charging my fitbit and seeing what being back at school again for 3 days a week does to my fitness levels.

I could pay 18 quid for 3 months of nutracheck calorie counting app and pc access. But I'm going to cheat and use the app to find calories and record it in my book instead as it only limits you adding things to your diary if you are a free member but you can still search. I prefer it to myfitnesspal as its uk based.

LadyPrigsbottom · 28/06/2020 16:13

How is everyone today?

I've done ok. I had oat milk porridge with peanut butter and banana for breakfast. Salmon, mashed potato and veg for lunch. Planning a roast dinner later, but without the potatoes. I snaffled the end of DC's wotsits and had some tomatoes while cooking lunch. I've had quite substantial meals today, although lunch was quite a small portion. Definitely haven't needed to snack.

Diet plan for tomorrow is making sure I have proper, nutrient dense meals.

I also want to up my exercise. I'm planning to do C25K, so might get up early and do that before school run tomorrow... we shall see! Planning C25K x 3 and also weights or strength training of some kind x 3 per week. That should be doable and I think will make a big difference to how I feel, if not necessarily to weight.

Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend!

Lots of snacks yesterday but I've been much better today. Had a small desert but a very small tea and I'm done for the day. I got in a good long walk today as well.
Planning to do some Pilates later and to start the new week with a positive attitude.

RubySlippers77 · 28/06/2020 23:21

I would love to join too if that's ok; I'm on another couple of weight loss threads too, need to keep myself motivated!!

My DC are only small (4yo twins) and I struggle to find the time to plan and cook healthily. I've finally got on top of the housework after an eternity months of lockdown, which was a weight off my mind, now I need to focus on this... I'm well aware that my DM is having health problems now after years of ignoring her weight issues, and it could easily be me next.

I was a healthy weight for years before I had the DC - now I have 3.5st to lose Sad

Is the book worth the cost @LadyPrigsbottom?!

PS love your username @DrMadelineMaxwell, I'm currently re-reading the books Grin

drspouse · 28/06/2020 23:36

Doing better now I'm trying to plan my day's food including snacks. MFP is refusing to sync with fitbit so I'm guessing how much exercise I'm getting but today I did a step climbing thing at a local park which DD enjoyed too.
I would ideally like an app to plan the day's food (not a meal planner but a notebook really, but a bit more structured).

2020in2020 · 29/06/2020 08:08

Morning everyone, sending lots of positivity to us all, it’s another week, we can do this Smile

Weighed in this morning and have lost 3lbs, I’m thrilled. I definitely know keeping off the booze is a key part of it for me, and planning meals militantly.

LadyPrigsbottom · 29/06/2020 10:22

Hi everyone!

Welcome ruby Smile. Yes, I really like the book. It just makes sense and it really reads as just a conversation with a knowledgeable, sensible friend and covers a lot of issues. Eating sustainably in terms of health, but also the environment, critical thinking about the snack food and diet industries etc. I really like it. I haven't stuck to the diet properly though, so whether it's worth it in terms of weight loss, I don't know yet.

@drspouse, I have a food journal, called something like Eat Better, Live Better, Feel Better. I have just started using it, but so far, I like it.

StealthNinjaMum · 29/06/2020 11:26

I'm back. Eating healthily still but too many snacks. I had an argument with my youngest daughter and my exh yesterday and drove to a cafe where I had an ice cream and packet of crisps in the car.

Anyway, I have got to be positive. I am drinking lots of water and less coffee. I'm also eating a fairly nutritional diet - it's really 'just' the snacks that need to go.

I weighed myself. 10st 10 so my BMI is 25.5. I am overweight by 4lbs. It doesn't sound like much but I am only 5 ft 4 and it goes on my stomach so I can't fit into my favourite jeans. I'd like to be 9st 10 by September as I'd like to either go to a spa or a weekend break if my ex is willing to look after dc.

butidoloveyou · 29/06/2020 12:47

Hi everyone. Just checking in for a new week...weighed myself and I gained 2 lbs this week Time to draw a line under that and start afresh today! Have had a good morning and drinking plenty of water to keep me going...
@2020in2020 Well done! I'm hoping for a loss like that next week!

2020in2020 · 29/06/2020 16:29

Ah thanks! I don’t expect it to continue like that... probably just bloating coming off but it’s really encouraging!

LadyPrigsbottom · 29/06/2020 19:07

So far, so good today!

I have just had my three, reasonably healthy, meals. Apart from tasting the pasta sauce I made for dinner, I haven't eaten anything else. A few teas and a coffee as well, plus water.

Just have to make it to bed time and that is Monday done.

It was good today that I more or less knew what I was going to make for dinner and I made it early by our standards, so I wasn't hungry beforehand. Need a plan for tomorrow now...

OP posts:
StealthNinjaMum · 29/06/2020 21:38

butidoloveyou hopefully we’ll both be 3lbs down in a week.

I had a relatively good day. Breakfast was a piece of toast, which is normal. Lunch was a fairly big tuna baguette from a cafe but dinner was a Greek salad followed by fruit melon. I have no idea how many calories (the baguette was probably loads) but it was my first day in weeks without snacks.

2020 3lbs is amazing, if you keep up like this by mid July you might have lost an inch or gone down a clothes size.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/06/2020 22:34

@RubySlippers77 They're good books, aren't they?

14.4 and a half for my starting weight today. Horrified by that but it's all self inflicted.

I've put on 10lb during the lockdown, while DH has lost FIVE STONE! Bloody hell.

Today I was back in my classroom for the first time. I felt like I was sat down for a lot of it, but I've easily clocked up my 10,000 steps, whereas I was struggling to get half of that on a wfh day.

LadyPrigsbottom · 30/06/2020 11:09

I have started today feeling positive. Planning to stick to my three meals again, but this time, trying not to have anything carby, as it is empty calories.

I had yoghurt, strawberries and almonds in a bowl, with 2 x boiled eggs and an avocado for breakfast. No...not exactly low calorie, but it is low carb.

Planning roasted aubergines, tomatoes, garlic and olives with some blue cheese on top for lunch. Tuna salad for dinner.

I feel as if I'm eating 'like a grown up' if that makes sense?

On the exercise front, I've had second thoughts on the C25K... because A) it's miserable weather, B) my nobbly knees probably wouldn't enjoy the running, at my weight, and C) it means I have to get dressed in my gym gear and leave the house.

Instead, I'm going to try and do 5 x 30 minute sessions this week, of a Davina exercise DVD I have. It is sort of a mix of HIIT, cardio, weights and body weight strength training. A bit like 30 day shred I think. 30 mins a day should easily be doable. On my days off, I'll do a good walk and / or yoga.

LadyPrigsbottom · 01/07/2020 09:00

How is everyone?

I stuck to my plan again yesterday (I've actually surprised myself there Grin).

Plan today is just to stick to my three meals again. Aiming for healthyish meals, but not low carb today, as I'd need to go to the shops to make that feasible.

Think I'll have an egg on toast with some fruit this morning. Jacket potato for lunch with salad. No idea about dinner.

Enjoying the flexibility of this and this week, (so far), I have been able to stick to it with relative ease. I definitely feel like I'm slowly regaining control, which was my aim really. I am not going to weigh myself for another few weeks, as I don't expect much change. It is meant to be slow weight loss on this. Obviously, if I start bursting out of my jeans I'll weigh myself!

Hope everyone else is well.
