Hello!

I have gained a shocking amount of weight and absolutely need to regain control of myself.

I do not need another drop-some-lbs-quickly-to-look-lovely-in-my-new-frock-diet. I think it is more serious than that for me now and I need to completely transform my relationship with food, as it has obviously become unhealthy.

I have come crawling back to dieting, (and to MN), to hopefully find some weight loss buddies.

I am planning to do the "No S Diet". The rules are:

  1. No sweet treats
  2. No second helpings
  3. No snacking between meals

Except on "S" days; Saturdays, Sundays and Special Days, (birthdays, Christmas etc).

On "S" days, the theory is that you stick to your three, square meals and also have a special treat or two over the weekend. It isn't that you can then eat a whole tub of ice cream every weekend or anything.

It is meant to be a lifelong plan, (aren't they all?), not a quick fix. So I am not expecting rapid weight loss. I honestly just need to stop gaining at such an alarming rate. Even if I stay as fat as I am, (and I am quite fat), I could live with it, but the rapid weight gain has scared me tbh! I have gained approximately two stone in less than a year SadBlushConfused. Two years ago, I had a normal BMI and I'd just had a baby. Now, I am on the cusp of obese.

I am circa 14 stone, (a few lbs under), and need to be circa 11 and a half stone. At this point, I'd settle for anything under 13! I am 36.

Would love some company Smile.

Morning everyone!

I am feeling so much better. I honestly think it was the Wine. Which is gutting, as I bloody love wine! Oh well.

So, I've started today with a smoothie, made with avocado, oats, seeds, banana, dates and kiwi. I don't honestly think the No S Diet author would approve of smoothies, as it can't be served on a plate, but I actually just wanted the smoothie, so nerr author Wink. It was very filling and probably plenty of calories, so it will easily see me to lunchtime. Planning egg and asparagus salad for lunch with homemade croutons, then lamb koftas with greek salad for dinner. It is going to be HOT here today, so will be chugging sparkly water and trying not to have too much caffeine, which is often my crutch through the day.

How is everyone else doing?

I'm planning a weigh in for next Monday, so will be trying to be Halo until then.

butudoloveyou I have never been able to stop myself eating. I think I was grown up in the ‘clear your plate, there are starving children in africa’ era of the 70 / 80s where those of us with parents brought up with rationing were forced to eat everything.

If ever I felt full I would still finish the plate. Now I just give myself small portions and I know it will fill me up - but it’s my brain that decides how much I will eat not my body. My downfall is too many snacks at the moment.

Today I polished off a packet of smarties I bought for dd2! But I had a salad, pita bread, hummus and veg sticks for both lunch and dinner. I’m definitely eating healthier.

I’m currently soaking some lentils. Tomorrow I’m going to make lentil soup that should last a couple of days.

LadyPrigsbottom · 23/06/2020 20:58

I didn't do so well today, as I wasn't hungry enough at lunchtime. Didn't eat for ages and then, before I knew what had hit me, it was time to collect dc from school. Predictably I then ate the door off the fridge while I was making dinner Blush. Lesson learnt, onward and upward, so much for "Halo"Blush.

In my defence it was boiling here today. Hard to cook and the toddler and I went for a walk in the woods and got carried away.

Glad you're feeling better today LadyPrigsbottom.

I failed in my no S aims yesterday but drinking wine and today by having the tiniest sliver more quiche with my salad (therefore seconds!) but I am working my way up to going full on no S mode!

Today I've had no snacks and no sugar, so just that tiny seconds let me down.

I have found a great way to eat more slowly and consciously and not just mindlessly keep eating until the plate is empty - imagine you are having dinner with someone you really fancy or really want to impress. They are sitting opposite you and it's just the two of you having dinner together ...

It sure does make you mindful!

LadyPrigsbottom · 23/06/2020 21:12

Omg that is an amazing idea chic Grin. I might have breakfast with Helen Mirren or Judy Dench tomorrow, (I can't say I'm in love with either of them, but I'd definitely want to impress them if I met them)!

I didn't snack yesterday and was feeling very virtuous but didn't do as well today. However I did some pilates this evening and gave myself a pedicure so the day wasn't a total write off.
I'm going to try a lentil recipe as well tomorrow. Lentil Dahl from the BBC recipe site. I know I'm eating way too much bread at the moment. Coming up to lunchtime I'm inclined to get hungry and go for a bagel or sandwich and that's only empty calories really.

BurtsBeesKnees · 24/06/2020 07:33

I lost 2.5 lb this week. I was hoping for more as it's my first week but it's a loss so I'm happy.

BabCNesbitt · 24/06/2020 07:37

Well, two days of sticking to No S and I’m feeling very virtuous - this is usually the point where I figure that because I’ve been good for two days, I surely must have lost some weight already and then I get annoyed and think “fuck it”, but I’ve decided to hold off and only weigh myself monthly!

@Chicchicchicchiclana I did have a beer last night, but I had a look in the No S Diet book and according to the author, he doesn’t count alcoholic drinks as ‘S’s. “If you have two drinks or less, I don’t imagine they’ll have much impact from a caloric point of view.” I’m not sure how nutritionally sound that is, but as I was avoiding the extra portions of dinner and many slices of toast and jam I’d usually be snacking on in lockdown, I guess one beer won’t wreck it!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/06/2020 08:24

WhistlersandJugglers - I'm sure my problem is bread too (along with generally too large portions) - that's where I waste calories and where I really need to make changes.

The hot weather helps in eating less generally so am thinking positive and that it will be a good day today.

I had thought of getting my long neglected bike out of the shed but I think I'll leave it for a day or two - forecast is 31 deg here today and tomorrow!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/06/2020 08:25

BurtsBees - 2.5lb loss is great!

StealthNinjaMum · 24/06/2020 10:52

burtsbees congratulations on the weight loss. I’d love to lose that much in the first week.

Having said that I don’t feel ready to weigh myself, I was really slim a year ago and don’t want to admit how much I have let myself go but most of my clothes don’t fit so I can see it.

I haven’t been doing much exercise lately but I’m going to spend half an hour doing some gardening and I might take dc for a walk to the local park later.

Food will be soup for lunch and a salad and potato for dinner.

LadyPrigsbottom · 24/06/2020 11:02

Ooooh lentil Dahl sounds amazing! You have inspired me to make Dahl for lunch whistlers.

Like you and chic, bread can be my downfall. Even if I don't eat 'junk food' like biscuits and crisps, I can still really overdo it by eating bread and butter.

burtsbees, 2.5 lbs is great! I would also be delighted to lose that.

babcnesbitt, well done on sticking to plan so well! Yes, I heard that a drink or two here and there is fine on No S. Having not drunk for a couple of months and STILL gained weight, I can confirm that, if you're a moderate drinker, alcohol doesn't seem to be the thing piling on the pounds.

Good start today. I had two poached eggs on one piece of toast, some fruit and some tea. I'm planning the aforementioned dahl for lunch and grilled pork chop, air fried potatoes and salad for dinner.

I don't think I will risk alcohol again for a while. I'm fine without it still fat though and I felt horrid after the wine at the weekend. I might have a light fentemans tonic later, sans GinSad.

WhistlersandJugglers · 24/06/2020 17:04

I didn't make a Dahl. I made a beef casserole instead-lean beef and loads of veg. But now it's really hot and I don't think it was the best dinner choice. Teens will probably scoff it anyway. It was almost too hot to walk today.

LadyPrigsbottom · 24/06/2020 17:13

Whew yes it is HOT here today. I did the school pick-up on foot, but didn't bring DC's scooter, as I didn't want to be running to keep up!

I had dahl for lunch. It was ok, but not my best dahl work tbh. Also probably too hot for a bowl of steaming dahl tbf. I'm not sure what the plan for dinner is atm, as air frying potatoes sounds a bit sweaty too at the moment! The 5yo didn't want it and had a sandwich anyway. The 2yo was tired and grumpy, so is having a nap. DH is still working upstairs. I might confer with him when he finishes. I'm melting though!

butidoloveyou · 24/06/2020 23:05

@BurtsBeesKnees Well done, that's a great loss!

I've failed miserably today. I've eaten everything in sight. Still eating now and it's 11pm. I know I'm not hungry - it's emotional eating - yet I can't seem to stop myself. I suppose I could be positive as I cooked dinner rather than ordering a takeaway, but other than that it has been a bad day Sad

StealthNinjaMum · 25/06/2020 09:03

butidoloveyou don’t worry about yesterday, we all have days where we eat everything in sight. Just start today afresh. Do you know what specifically was causing it? Could you train yourself to have a glass of water when you get like that? Easier said than done but I am going to drink more water too.

Today I have promised dc Nando’s delivery for either lunch or dinner so I will probably order myself quarter of a chicken and have it with a home made salad. Dinner will be lentil soup.

BurtsBeesKnees · 25/06/2020 09:37

@butidoloveyou we all have oops days, key is to not make it an oops week, or in my case an oops few months Grin

I've managed to be good most if the week. Been keeping my processed carbs to a minimum (2 slices of wholemeal bread per day). Had lots of fruit and salads for lunch, which is easy in this weather. What's not easy is having more than 2 gin and tonics, in a long glass with lots of ice in the garden after work. Managed to have one every other day, and just stick to one (ok it's a large one)

LadyPrigsbottom · 25/06/2020 13:46

Hi all!

@butidoloveyou, don't worry about the off day! It could happen to a bishop.

How is everyone today? My lord it is HOT again. I took the 2yo in a walk in the pushchair and managed just shy of 5 km. I'll do around 3 km when I collect dc1 from school, so that's pretty alright for such a hot day. I really want to start doing yoga again, but I can't seem to find the time...or is it the motivation 🤔?

I had a smoothie for breakfast and just had scrambled egg on toast for lunch. Not sure what I'll do for dinner, but I'm considering some sort of veg salad with blue cheese dressing.

OP posts:
drspouse · 25/06/2020 14:16

I think I need some motivation and a more gradual but more disciplined approach. I'm just about getting back into exercise after a long standing injury - need to do my physio every day.
I use MFP but have been logging most of the day at tea time, going "whatever" and snacking through the evening.
So my plan is to a) log through the day b) plan what I will eat in the morning and try and get breakfast/lunch ready earlier, while saving a snack for after dinner, and c) do my 10K steps or some other form of exercise (e.g. walking workouts on YouTube) every day.

drspouse · 25/06/2020 14:18

And yes it's hot - I have a meeting now and the DCs are both in school today and I'm sending DH on the school run and then taking DS to the river to swim!

BurtsBeesKnees · 25/06/2020 14:49

Hi there too. Haven't taken my dogs out today due to the heat so not many steps for me.

Today I had a Druid salad and some low fat Greek yogurt for breakfast, salad for lunch and I'll have an omelette for tea with some new potatoes - and only ONE gin Grin

BMaman · 25/06/2020 14:54

Oh this sounds a really good plan!

I like that for a lifelong approach.

I have a lot to lose (5 stone+) so am going a little stricter to begin. (1200-1400 cals a day, and limiting my carbs as I'm a carb fiend) but that sounds a very healthy way to maintain/live life.

drspouse · 25/06/2020 14:57

Umm is that a fruit salad?

butidoloveyou · 25/06/2020 20:26

Thanks, everyone. Today has been a better day and I don't have as much of an appetite in this heat! Drinking more water sounds like a good idea and I think that will help. I've had quite a lot of water today so maybe that's why I'm not snacking as much. Hope you've all enjoyed the sunshine.
