Gastric Bypass in 2 months

fontofnoknowledge · 18/04/2018 07:44

I would like to know if anyone on here has had a Gastric Bypass. I have jumped through all the hoops and am now just waiting for surgery date which should be in the next 8 Weeks. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a Bypass or Sleeve . (Not a band it's a very different Operation) .
It appears to be a very taboo subject on MN - (I have even felt the need to name change) and despite there being hundreds of threads on the latest diet, there is surprisingly little about the only scientifically proven longterm sustainable weight loss treatment for those with obesity or morbid obesity.
I am after any advice for the immediate post op period and the process of moving from liquids to solids and any other advice really.

Hey everyone.

My top tips for the milk diet is to use yoyr milk allowance for the salty drink...a stock cube in milk is like a cup a soup. I also added a little chilli powered occasional for variance. Also...freeze sugar free squash/crush ice lollies for something to physically crunch on if needed.

It was really really hard and I found I cheated a couple of times. But spat the food out after chewing...the second week was easier though as the end was in sight.

I've started the couch to 5k and am on week 3 now. I'm wearing a 12-14 on the bottom and a 10-12 on the top. But the lbs haven't moved at all this month.

But a few bad habbits have slipped in. So I need to get on top of those. I ate chocolate again today...and had a double jamersons!!! It was fucking amazing...but then I felt nauseous and sick for hours! So probably not worth it all considering.

I'd still like to loose another 5kgs ...10 ideally. So I need to behave.

It's been quite hard with my mum in hospital. The leak has caused a splenic abscess..it's all looking very complex...messy and difficult to treat right now. :(

But I'm doing great....really suffering with the constipation...but I've become quite adapt at giving myself an enema if I haven't pooped after 10 days! Sorry tmi a bit gross but a realistic side effect for me.

I'm eating much bigger portions then I was. I reckon about 300ml/grams in a sitting now. So it's easy to rack up calories with the wrong foods.

CrabbityRabbit · 14/11/2018 18:29

Hey everyone!

This thread dropped off my I'm on and have only just caught up.

Update on me

I am now BMI 24.2 which I am very happy with. Weigh 10st 2lb from a high of 19st 7lbs. If I lose another 6lbs I will be less than half my former weight. Shock

My loss has slowed down a lot to around 1lb a week. This is partly due to being smaller and partly because I have been eating a lot more crap and not exercising so obsessively. I think this is good in the long term as I need to start looking at maintaining naturally and I do have a small worry about not being able to stop and getting ill.

On the plus side I feel awesome and look pretty good. Am reliably a 10-12 at the moment depending on the shop. I do have a pouchy tummy and my boobs are a bit empty sock. I have a little sagging on the sides of my arse as well. Annoying but an awful lot better than it could have been.

The thing I am still struggling with is constipation. Blush I had a monster shite yesterday that made me cry a bit and I was over a lb lighter after it. Need to remember to keep taking the lactulose.

You lovely lot

Super exciting times Font. You are going to boss it.

Congratulations on the BMI Sofabitch and you look fab. Hope your Mum improves as fast as possible.

All I can advise is to get his head down and power through JoshLyman. I just reminded myself it was temporary and stopped getting hungry after about 3 days of yoghurt. Drink loads of water.

Welcome Dangle

AnythingConsidered sounds like you are in a similar place to me. I think plateus and super slow losses are a good thing once under BMI 25.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 15/11/2018 15:58

Hello all, just here to update. We’ve transferred from hospital to hotel in Egypt and so far DH is feeling bruised and battered but is recovering well. He’s had some issues with hypertension but we think it was mostly due to loneliness and worrying about me getting over here safely-I didn’t arrive until the early hours of this morning. He’s doing a lot of sleeping-he was having hourly obs in the hospital which meant he’s not had a proper sleep. He’s hoping to have a short walk around tomorrow and be a little more active although he has been getting up regularly and going to the toilet.
Looking forward to going home now and starting recovery properly.

Sofabitch · 19/11/2018 19:55

@JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam welcome, I hope things are settling down and getting easier for him now, a lot of the early days was just remembering I couldn't eat! haha i did eat a roast potato in wk 2! as i forgot and just popped in my mouth!

@CrabbityRabbit Sounds like you are doing fantastically! well done, we had the same starting weight! so i'm jealous! remind me when your surgery was again? I'm 11 stone 6lbs now and a 10-12 on top and a 12-14 on the bottom. I'd still like to loose at least another 5kg or 1/2 a stone. but i've lost 82% of my excess weight!
10kg more and i will have lost half my body weight! as it is i've lost 52kgs... which is pretty much a whole person!! shocking!! anyway, i'm making an effort to push away the bad habits and get back to healthy eating. it really is easy to do as i'm so full up and satisfied on everything I eat. I just have to put that little bit of effort into healthy snacks.

also on week 4 of couch to 5k right now! taking a little longer as i'm so busy fitting it in is hard, but i'm enjoying it.... well. the rain put me off today but other wise ;)

@fontofnoknowledge Not long to go now!!! how are the irrational thoughts holding up? you must be getting excited!!! you've been so patient.

Hello to everyone else including all the lurkers!! and anyone considering the surgery... it really has changed my life

CrabbityRabbit · 20/11/2018 13:07

Mine was at the end of January. I have actually gained 3lb this week. Shock I have eaten and drunk absolute shite Fri-Mon due to being away. May have gained a pound of fat but think the other two are down to still being bunged up and water retention/glycogen from all the sugar. Will see what the scales say next week.

Sofabitch · 20/11/2018 17:50

So you're 4 months ahead of me.. there is hope I'll loose that last 10kg! Here hoping!!!

I think it's normal to have the odd day/week of eating crap. The Important thing is too act before it causes weight to creep back on

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 20/11/2018 19:37

So he’s 1 week post op, and first weigh in today-he’s 1 stone 6lb lighter.

We are glad to be home, did anyone suffer with nerve pain in their thigh post op? DHs is pretty bad.

Armchairanarchist · 20/11/2018 19:50

I had a sub total gastrectomy, which is a very similar operation but was told because I didn't have Cancer and wasn't overweight I'd be home in a couple of days. I had major complications, including the join blowing two days later which very nearly cost me my life. I needed a seven hour emergency op and ended up on life support in ICU for weeks. Two years later I suffer from chronic malnutrition and severe dumping syndrome and will never go back to work. I'd have died without this operation (I had a stricture) but there's no way on earth I'd recommend it to anyone if there was an alternative.

Sofabitch · 20/11/2018 20:22

Not in my thigh. But I had terrible shoulder pain for weeks.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 27/11/2018 21:59

Well he’s now 14 days post op and things are going well. He’s 2 stone lighter so that’s good, I’m having to nag him about water intake but he’s drinking plenty of decaf tea so his liquid intake is probably okay. His general diet is soups and weetabix (well soaked). He’s trying to up his protein game with some shakes.
He is very much looking forward to eating solid food which he can start next week.

parchworkpatty · 28/11/2018 21:27

JoshlymanshotterthanSam love your name ! As I type , DH and I am on Series 4 Episode 5. We started WestWing from the start 3 weeks ago. Love it....

Other than that, all I have to say to you lot is....

I HATE BLOODY MILK AND AFTER MONDAY (OP TUESDAY) I WILL NEVER TOUCH THE STUFF AGAIN. !!!!!

In all other matters , I am a serene calm Zen-like person , not at all grumpy, irritated and trying to gnaw off my own arm in a desperate need to chew something.....

Oblomov18 · 28/11/2018 21:41

Josh, Dh is having gastric surgery in about a week. So, I'll walk with you, post op recovery!

They won't know which type until they open him up, because he's had intestine surgery twice many years ago, and they haven't got the notes, so don't know what they'll find.

Sofabitch · 29/11/2018 20:16

Did you get some no added sugar crusha? I found that helped. Also a stock cube in milk is like a cup of soup.

It was so hard though for the first few days. Did get easier though.

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 29/11/2018 21:08

I bought some of the chocolate Crusha, it's horrible. Or maybe my tastes have changed lol. I have a glass of milk before bed each night (just cold), and thought I'd add some Crusha to make it less boring. Yuck. Maybe the other flavours will be better.

Fontofnoknowledge · 30/11/2018 08:11

Day 5 .. yes I've got both kinds . I've found that adding a spoon of instant coffee to warmed milk and choc crusha - has made a fairly palatable 'mocha' ..

Oblimov18 I'm in the same boat as your DH. Already had one abandoned surgery in Poland last year because of abdominal adhesions from previous surgery. I also don't know if I'll get a Bypass or Sleeve on Tuesday- just praying I'll get either ..

OP posts:
sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 30/11/2018 09:26

Good luck @Fontofnoknowledge. I had adhesions from gallbladder surgery years ago. I suspected I did as I had pain when bending over and my surgeon said he found quite a lot. He didn't manage to release all of them but he did release as many as he could (thankfully including the one that caused me pain) while he was doing my bypass.

Sofabitch · 30/11/2018 12:36

Yes..lots of very milky coffee is the way forward.

I also found adding rose leaves or cardamom pods etc. Basically anything to flavour the milk without adding sugar or calories etc.

CrabbityRabbit · 30/11/2018 17:32

I could sub a pint of milk for a Muller Lite on mine which wasn't much better but offered a little more texture.

I find a big mug of milky coffee very filling now 10 months post op. Hits that midmorn/midarvie bored snack craving at work.

Sofabitch · 01/12/2018 10:23

Just ran my first park run!! 5k in 32 mins!

Couldn't have even walked it this tine last year!

Fontofnoknowledge · 01/12/2018 21:51

Way to go Sofabitch ! Bet you couldn't of imagined that a year ago.. brilliant time for a first run !!

Day 6 of milk diet gone. Nearly cracked this evening. I'm not hungry at all but want to sink my teeth into something and CHEW...... Going to bed soon in order to get this day gone and on to the next.. literally wishing the time away until Tuesday morning.

I'll have change the thread name to Gastric Bypass in 2 DAYS !!!!

OP posts:
Sofabitch · 02/12/2018 08:39

2 days!!!!

So nearly there!

CrabbityRabbit · 04/12/2018 12:04

Thinking of you @Fontofnoknowledge

Hope it goes well and they manage to do everything they need to!

I had my last hospital appointment yesterday. They were really pleased as they measured me as being BMI 24. They said its very unusual for someone with starting BMI of 47 to hit a normal weight. I said I could lose another stone and they actually said not to! When I came in the room, the surgeon (not known for his way with words) said: "Look at you! You're thin."

Thin is never a word I could imagine applied to me so I am trying to reconcile it.

In other good news I hit my original target weight of 140lbs (10st) this morning! I decided a few months back to aim for 130lbs as a final figure so will try and get there but slowly and surely.

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 04/12/2018 12:18

Good luck @Fontofnoknowledge

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 04/12/2018 12:19

@CrabbityRabbit that's amazing, skinny minnie :)

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 04/12/2018 20:32

crabbity Well done, sounds like you’ve amazingly.

font Good luck, hope all is going well.

Oblomov how is DH?

My DH has now lost 2 and half stone and is doing really well, wounds are almost healed and he’s feeling good.
