Gastric Bypass in 2 months

fontofnoknowledge · 18/04/2018 07:44

I would like to know if anyone on here has had a Gastric Bypass. I have jumped through all the hoops and am now just waiting for surgery date which should be in the next 8 Weeks. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a Bypass or Sleeve . (Not a band it's a very different Operation) .
It appears to be a very taboo subject on MN - (I have even felt the need to name change) and despite there being hundreds of threads on the latest diet, there is surprisingly little about the only scientifically proven longterm sustainable weight loss treatment for those with obesity or morbid obesity.
I am after any advice for the immediate post op period and the process of moving from liquids to solids and any other advice really.

The first 24 hours for me were horrid. So much pain in my abdomen and my shoulder. I remember saying I regretted it!

But within 24 hours I was up and going to the bath room and the pain was bearable. Within 72 hours I was at my daughter's rock challenge. Uncomfortable but coping.

Mollie85 · 28/08/2018 14:43

Thanks sofa that’s reassuring

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 29/08/2018 08:09

Mollie - how are you today? My first 24 hours were awful, but after that I rapidly improved. Left shoulder pain was the only thing that lingered, and that lasted maybe a week and was more of an ache than a pain. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

CrabbityRabbit · 30/08/2018 12:10

Hi all

Sorry have been absent and this thread dropped off my 'I'm on' list.

Hope you are feeling more human Mollie. I felt OK on the second day and almost back to normal after a week.

I am now 11st 6lbs down from 19st 7lbs. Need to lose another stone to get to top of BMI healthy range. I have lost 8st or 113lbs.

This means that since I was sleeved at the end of January 2018, I have lost 88% of my excess weight. I have been going to the gym a lot and eating well. My mate who started at 22st and had surgery the same day with the same surgeon has lost 86lbs. She has been eating chocolate most days and hasn't been to the gym. So the sleeve can do a lot but it can't do everything without your own effort and input.

I can't stop looking in mirrors. I am now a large 12 or small 14 in clothes sizes. This is the best thing I could have done.

I hope to be BMI 25 by early-mid October. My ultimate goal is 9st to 9st 4lbs which is possible to achieve by Christmas but I won't be too upset if it takes longer. If I don't go below 10st that will also be OK.

Mollie85 · 30/08/2018 16:05

Hello all!

Yep miles better, bloody hell those first thirty hours were a fucker though!!!
In fact, I wish I’d booked to go home tomorrow now as I feel able.

The one thing I am worried about though is that going through airport security I always beep- trying to explain to someone in Austrian I can’t have a tummy pat down might prove difficult?
I’ll be fine once I get to gatwick!

I had diarrhea today - all I’ve had since Sunday is a carton of apple juice which I’ve diluted with water so there is nothing solid going in.

Lot less tired! No longer regretting a thing. Have absolutely no hunger and just want a hot bath (at home!)

I do keep getting what I would describe as bubbles of pain in my stomach that last 3-4 seconds then usually my tummy gargles and it goes. It’s not unbearable... is this acid or unusual?

Thanks to all that posted - hearing your stories are so positive and your support has meant a great deal.

Mollie85 · 31/08/2018 13:24

Just had me discharge papers! Tomorrow tomorrow I love ya ....

I have to self administer Heparin into my belly for five days after x

CrabbityRabbit · 31/08/2018 21:28

Yeah I had to inject as well. The trick is finding a place it doesn't hurt. I had spots on my belly that were basically numb maye because I was so fat. Give an experimental needle prod to an area and if it hurts, shift spot.

Mollie85 · 01/09/2018 06:46

Thanks crabitty - my trick is having a bestie who is a nurse with a week off Grin

Honestly I am such a baby about these things!!!!

Work to an electrical storm in Czechia, it’s now gone. Checked the weather from Austria (where I’m flying from) and I depart at 12 and they get the storm at 2 so I should be ok!!

I’ve had no coffee because their milk isn’t the best (I’m from Guernsey so I’m a bit of a milk snob if there is such a thing)

How do we think I’d do with a small (I know I am unlikely to finish it) decaf skinny latté in Gatwick with a canderel sweetener? I’m craving the Java!!!!!

CrabbityRabbit · 01/09/2018 20:35

Probably fine. I'd ask for decaff just to be safe as caffiene can irritate the healing.

I struggled to finish a cup of tea at first but can have one comfortably now.

Mollie85 · 02/09/2018 18:20

Yeah I’m struggling to finish anything. I’m 3/4 of a way through a chicken cup a soup I started at 5.30. I’ve already reheated it...

Given up now :)

Mollie85 · 02/09/2018 18:20

Crabbity I have just no hunger... does that come back eventually or do you have to mindful to ensure you have nutrient in your body??

Sofabitch · 03/09/2018 00:23

I occasionally get hungry. But at first I had to set alarms to remind myself to eat

Mollie85 · 03/09/2018 05:00

That’s useful sofa- hope you’re getting on well Grin
Off for a walk through town today to treat myself (treating myself involves paperchase and WH Smith) and to get some more protein shakes.

From last Monday’s weight, I’m 13lbs down and I can’t quite believe that Confused so in the last two weeks with LRD I am a little over two stone down x

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 03/09/2018 07:32

I get hungry now (3 months in), but it’s easy to deal with, because a skinny latte or a protein shake will fix hunger really easily.
For protein shakes my favourite was Arla (can get in Asda), still have them in the fridge.
Had the most glorious day yesterday in an outlet centre. Discovered that Joules are the worst for vanity sizing when I got a pair of size 14’s on easily! But happier to note that I’m a 16 everywhere else, down from a 22 at the start of the journey.
Was thinking I might paint my toenails this week...now that I can reach them properly again. Yays all round.

Mollie85 · 03/09/2018 13:23

Cheese that is fantastic!!!!

I do like joules, I tend to get mine on eBay - they have all the shops I can’t get here in Guernsey like H&M, River Island, etc

Find I’m forgetting things. I have my nephew today and as part of his lunch he’s got a sandwich and some grapes and without thinking I picked one up to pop in my mouth ... such a habit. Lots of things to be relearned Grin

Dr has told me I can try mushy foods next week after two weeks on liquid but I wonder if that’s too soon. I’ve got it in my head I want smooth root veg mash and gravy... do we think that’s ok?

Sofabitch · 04/09/2018 06:11

All my meals have been protein based. Can you add some protein to the root veg mash and gravy?

I spend my entire days trying to eat 50grams total protein. It's all consuming some days lol.

Sofabitch · 04/09/2018 06:13

Although i popped a roast potato in my mouth without thinking innthe very early days...just chewed it for ages and was fine. It was the best roast potato I ever had ;)

Sofabitch · 04/09/2018 06:14

I never had a liquid phase. Soft pureed for for the firdt couple of weeks.

Sofabitch · 04/09/2018 06:24

Just to add crabbity. My mum goes to the gym for 1.5hours a day. Not a chocolate bar in sight and she is very careful with her food intake. She stopped loosing weight at 60% loss and hasn't lost even a 1lb in 6 months now.

So I don't think its always about effort. The Dr said it is a lot to do with age and metabolism changes we don't fully understand yet as a result of surgery. Only 20% of sleeve patients loose 80% of their excess weight. And most of those are younger patients. So I think it's more complex than to say it's entirely about effort. As I know my mum has been trying really hard.

Saying that loosing almost 50kgs has completely transformed her life and she said even if she stayed the same she would be happy as she is mobile now.

I hit 40kgs loss this week. Wearing a mix of 16s and 18s with 1 pair of asda size 14 jeans. I still find if I'm making lunch for work I take more food than I need I think a lot of it is about not knowing what I'll eat. Sometimes real food is a struggle and other times I'll not want something sloppy.

I'm coming up to 4.5 months post surgety now. I'm still loosing fairly well.
I wonder if I'll be dissapointed when it starts to slow down? That will be interesting to see.

Mollie85 · 04/09/2018 08:59

Sofa thanks, because it’s the pureeed stage I was drawing a blank at what could go with said mash and gravy. I am not going to start putting chicken into the blender :)

Or I wonder if I could put a scoop of why protein in the mash?

Mollie85 · 04/09/2018 09:00

*whey

CrabbityRabbit · 04/09/2018 18:34

Yes age makes a big difference. Both me and my mate are late twenties/early thirties.

I love root veg mash. Put it on top of cottage pie.

I get a bit hungry now but not much and easily fixed.

CrabbityRabbit · 07/09/2018 16:50

How is everyone doing?

I have a challenge as am hosting a hen do tomorrow for a mate. Am baking a chocolate cake which I'm going to stick together with raspberry buttercream then glaze with chocolate ganache. It's in the oven now taunting me with chocolately aroma. There will be afternoon tea with cocktails.

I'm planning on having a v small slice and keeping busy so people don't notice how much I eat. I will also have to stick to non fizzy cocktails and explain that somehow. Confused Maybe I will say I have been suffering with my gut and trying out diff strategies to make it better.

Mollie85 · 07/09/2018 18:09

Hi crabbity - sounds delicious!!! A simple “I’m cutting down” would work perhaps? But only if asked... if not then try the “grumbly tummy” excuse Grin

I ended up back at the dr today for bloods. I’ve been exhausted and my oxygen is low and so is bp, so I’ve been signed off for a week Confused which I need but my work are so funny about that kind of thing. I’m starting purée food this weekend ...
I’ve not weighed since Tuesday as I was starting to do it every day

irunlikeahipoo · 07/09/2018 19:07

Make sure you take your vitamins
Galfur Syrup is amazing for low iron ask your doctor about it
Yo often can’t absorb normal vitamins tablets after Biatric surgery so liquid is better
And regular B12 shots as well
