Gastric Bypass in 2 months

fontofnoknowledge · 18/04/2018 07:44

I would like to know if anyone on here has had a Gastric Bypass. I have jumped through all the hoops and am now just waiting for surgery date which should be in the next 8 Weeks. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a Bypass or Sleeve . (Not a band it's a very different Operation) .
It appears to be a very taboo subject on MN - (I have even felt the need to name change) and despite there being hundreds of threads on the latest diet, there is surprisingly little about the only scientifically proven longterm sustainable weight loss treatment for those with obesity or morbid obesity.
I am after any advice for the immediate post op period and the process of moving from liquids to solids and any other advice really.

Another week, another weigh in & my weight loss had definitely slower/slowed down. Less than 0.5kg a week for the last 4 weeks.

My appetite has d definitely returned. Can't eat as much as I used to pre-op, but a definite lift in my portion sizes/amount I can eat before discomfort. Also made some bad food choices & my sweet tooth is returning.

However, I am still losing & was warned this would happen, so remaining positive. but its hard not to go back to the old eating habits/old ways!

I have joined my local running club beginners course and loving that I'm not struggling as much with the running as I did as pre-op. Determined to run our local Santa 5k fun run, which I would never have dreamed off before

AnythingConsidered · 23/09/2018 20:12

Font won't be long until your losing.
Everyone has their own journey and I'm looking forward to reading yours!

It was hard for me to not compare against others weight loss with my gastric band, but this time I have focused on the 'non scale victories' and found my journey so much more enjoyable.

I am loving my waist (though dressing for an hour glass shape is quite challenging!), my general fitness/energy, my skinny knees and being able to shop in normal stores.

Sofabitch · 24/09/2018 13:03

Anything I'm the same. Weight loss has slowed right down and my appetite is returning. I'm nearer 1000cals a day now and much more likely to crave sweets or ice cream and I ate a whole mcflurry the other day!!!

I've countered by adding in more veg. To try and fill me up with less cals.

I also find I'm better If I eat properly. So egg on toast for breakfast a high protein sandwhich for lunch and a full dinner. If I have yoghurt or milky drinks that used to fill me up for hours then I'm hungry within an hour. So I have to make sure I eat proper food.

CrabbityRabbit · 25/09/2018 21:28

I'm only a pound off this week as well. MacMillan coffee morning at work yesterday so baked Sunday and ate loads of ganache then had carrot cake yesterday. Made me feel sick all morning. Sugar makes me feel like shite now so I don't know why I do it.

CrabbityRabbit · 06/10/2018 20:49

How is everyone doing? I did my bridesmaiding and I love the pictures! I could barely look at the ones from last year. If anyone from this thread would like to see them for a comparison, PM me and I'll trust you not to out me!

@Sofabitch how is it going with the extra veg? I have struggled with sweet cravings this week but sugar makes me feel so crap. Back on low carb today and feel much better.

@AnythingConsidered have your losses been the same?

@Mollie85 I hope you broke your stall. They really suck.

@sunshinewithabitofdrizzle have you been shopping? I found a full length leather coat in a charity shop today for £40! It does up but is still a little too tight to wear. Size 10!

@TheBlessedCheesemaker how is it going with the gym? I only went twice this week so must do better next week.

@fontofnoknowledge any updates with your journey? Its getting closer now!

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 06/10/2018 21:39

hi @CrabbityRabbit Wow size 10, that's incredible, well done.

I'm 2 weeks post op now. I'm not down a clothes size yet. My jeans are looser though and I've bought my jeans in a smaller size. I can get them up but they're a few inches off closing.

I lost 10lbs pre-op on the Liver Reduction Diet and I've lost 10lbs post op so far. 2 others I know who had surgery the same day seem to have lost a fair bit more than me. But there's no point worrying, it'll come off when it wants to. I've only just started the mashed/soft food stage and enjoying eating proper savoury foods. I got so sick of sweet stuff and the soups I'd made just didn't cut it.

Sofabitch · 06/10/2018 23:10

I'm doing fine. Loss has def slowed down. But I'm now 79kg and reliably wearing a 14 in most shops.

Had my 6 month consultant appointment this week. He is really happy. So all good.

Sofabitch · 17/10/2018 19:42

Ahhh...not lost any weight since this last post...that is so depressing. :(

Been super good. Eating really healthy...exercising and walking loads...but nothing:(

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 17/10/2018 19:57

I'll be 4 weeks out on Friday and the weight is coming off sooooo slowly. Still not down a clothes size, not lost a stone yet since surgery. You'd think on so few calories the weight would be falling off. You have my sympathies @Sofabitch

Fontofnoknowledge · 17/10/2018 20:31

All my friends in our hospitals fb group say don't look at the weight look at the inches !
Do clothes feel bigger ?
Did you measure yourself 'before' ? You could easily be putting in muscle and losing fat !

They also all say they have a sudden 'whoosh !' Don't lose heart.

And... Don't drink fizz ! It stretches the pouch. The carbonated gas expands the pouch. !

OP posts:
lovemenot · 18/10/2018 15:25

Almost 5 weeks out, 30 lbs gone, down a size in clothes. Tend to have a good eating day followed by a not so good one but I guess that's normal.

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Fontofnoknowledge · 19/10/2018 19:36

Hi CrabbityRabbit and all the gang.. it's getting closer.. pre Op on the 7th Nov and Op on Dec 4th. !!!
Always makes me laugh to look at this thread . 'Gastric Bypass In 2 Months' !! I was SO naive about the NHS timescale..

Anyway. Nearly there. Just enough time left to start really winding myself up about dying in the operating table.. anyone else go down this crazy mental rabbit hole ?

OP posts:
AnythingConsidered · 25/10/2018 17:44

Hey all. Can't believe it's been a month since I last posted, time flies!!

My weight is really very slow now. Down to 79 kgs and classed as healthy BMI. I need another 4kg to hit target and be smack in the middle of healthy range, however the weight loss is very, very slow now. With a couple of weeks at zero loss (& zero gain), I'm definitely in a plateau.

@Crabbity your journey has been amazing! An inspiration to us all.

@Sofa I'm a officially a size 12 now in most stores, however I'm finding that I buy a 14 to hide/cover my lumps and bumps - how are your finding the fit of clothes?

@Font the NHS is definitely slow, but I think it helps with the preparation, gives your head some time to plan and adjust to the journey you are going to go through. At least that is what I told myself to get through the 6 months before the operation (I thought mine would be Christmas and ended up April!!)

Love that the thread had continued to grow!

Sofabitch · 28/10/2018 09:32

Hey all. I'm doing well. 75kgs now. No longer obese. Bmi 29!

Yay

But! ...my mum is currently in hospital with a late sleeve leak and she's 1 year post op. This has shaken me a bit as I thought most of the bad risks were past by now.

Sofabitch · 28/10/2018 09:37

I'm pretty lucky. My extra skin is minimum so clothes fit alright.

I do wear a lot of support underwear though.

DangletitsMcDougal · 01/11/2018 16:49

Hi guys - I've been lurking since nearly the beginning of the post

@fontofnoknowledge I cant believe you're so close. Pre-op in 6 days!!!

@sofabitch sorry to hear about your mums issues - Hope she is feeling better now. And YAY on the BMI! Thats amazing.

I had my op at the end of Feb RNY and have now lost just over 5 st. slow slow slow now and still 119kg. But I'm feeling great. I started swimming in the last 3 weeks and swam a mile on Monday. Starting to fit into things that havent been out for a year or three... or more! Keep the faith!

fontofnoknowledge · 04/11/2018 11:23

Sooooooo. 7 months after starting this thread. (Gastric Bypass in 2 months 😄) I am now exactly 1 month away... it has been such a long and winding road that I won't believe it until it's done. !

Thanks DangletitsMcdougal pre op Wednesday 🎉 counting the hours.
Now only have 30 days left to obsess about ;
Dying on operating table
Not being able to do Sleeve OR Bypass because of adhesions.
Dying on operating table
Complications post surgery..
... oh , did I mention dying on the operating table ?

Anxious ? Me ? Never !

OP posts:
sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 04/11/2018 15:06

aw good luck. I had loads of adhesions apparently, and my surgeon couldn't release them all but he released enough of them, and luckily did the one near my belly button that had been causing me so much pain when I bent over. The dying on the operating table caused me sleepless nights too. I did my will the week before surgery and was so scared but the day of the surgery I was completely calm.

AnythingConsidered · 04/11/2018 15:08

This month is gonna fly by Font, especially once you start the pre-op/liver shrink diet.

It's a real mixture of terrifying/excitement at the same time.

Its easy for me to say that none of that stuff will happen, but I understand it doesn't stop the anxiety. What I can say is look at how many people have had the op in this thread and none of it hairbrush to them.

Also worth remembering you started this thread, and it has been a great story teller, support mechanism and guide to those who have posted as well the lurkers - you have to come back and finish telling your story too!

Sofabitch · 04/11/2018 19:11

Good luck!!!

You won't die and it will be so worth it!!!

Here is a little before and after for inspiration and motivation

fontofnoknowledge · 05/11/2018 12:08

Hey Sofabitch wow !! You look amazing.

AnythingConsidered It's weird. In real life I do (what most would consider) a very stressful job. I am the last person in the world to be so namby-pamby ball of angst. I have always been a 'just get on with it ' type. So think this anxiety is a result of the long wait as much as anything else.

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle thanks for the positive adhesion story. It gives me hope !

Hello all, I hope you don’t mind me joining you?
My husband is scheduled for his gastric sleeve next week and it’ll be nice to have people to chat to about it.
Current weight-32 stones. Height 6ft 1. BMI 59.
We are paying to have it done abroad as the NHS is so clogged. He’s on the LSD at the moment and finding it tough going. I am trying very hard to be supportive but if anyone has any tips I’d be grateful-what did/would have helped you during this time from your significant other?

fontofnoknowledge · 08/11/2018 16:31

Hi JoshLyman just wanted to wish you both good luck for next week. My LRD doesn't start until 26th as BMI under 45.. but still know it's tough. Tell him it's well worth it as gives surgeon clear view and ability to move liver out the way.

Where are you going to have it done ? x

OP posts:
JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 08/11/2018 18:36

Hi font he’s going to Egypt to a very well recommended surgeon. This guy has operated on a friend of mine and she’s had outstanding results and is full of praise.

fontofnoknowledge · 08/11/2018 20:08

Fabulous. ! Hope all is good. It really is the right thing to do. Once BMI goes over 45 for men they have less than a 1:1236 chance of returning to a healthy BMI on their own. And if that TINY % that manage it... it all goes back on and more within 5 yrs.
Stats from imperial college obesity research centre.

This really is life saving surgery !
