Common Sense Eating

SouthernNorthernGirl · 11/02/2017 13:32

I wanted to start a thread about eating sensibly / healthily etc without any diet fads involved.
Would love a bit of support in this, and I'm sure there are others that feel the same.

Hi all!

Food has been okish, but not wonderful... I am off to another gym class this evening and have managed to resist wine since the weekend so woo!

Not sure my weight loss is going to be anything great (or anything at all at this rate), but I'm definitely feeling a lot healthier. Maybe healthiness is the starting point and weight loss will follow? Wishful thinking???

badhotfanny · 16/02/2017 00:00

Sub 😱😱😱

badhotfanny · 16/02/2017 00:01

(I am currently in the pub eating crisps and drinking wine.)

Sorry everyone.

Submariner · 16/02/2017 06:05

Don't be sorry - hope you enjoyed it! :)

kneesupfatty · 16/02/2017 07:15

Did anyone watch the programme about the super slimmers and whether they'd managed to keep the weight off? It was a very depressing outlook...Sad However, one of the scientists did say that the small number of people who do manage to keep the weight off typically fit in at least an hour of exercise every single day! So, I'm off for a bike ride later!

Howlongtillbedtime · 16/02/2017 07:57

I watched it knees
It seemed that the whole idea was it worked but you have to keep doing it which I suppose is why the healthy eating and moving more works better than the restricting carbs, grapefruit diet etc . Makes sense but depressing there isn't an easy fix !
I have been rubbish this week . TOTM and Valentine's and a stinky cold (excuses excuses)
I am feeling a wee bit better so my plan is to behave today and try and get to the gym after work if i can .

Good luck all .

kneesupfatty · 16/02/2017 09:11

Yes, How, which I suppose is why people have more success if they keep exercising every day.
This week isn't great for me either - Half Term, Valentines, cold, out of normal routine.... but, I suppose that we're always going to have 'bad' weeks - I just need to stop it spiralling out of all control.

SouthernNorthernGirl · 16/02/2017 10:56

I didn't manage to get on here yesterday.
It's so refreshing to be reading what people are really eating, without the guilt or unnecessary angst about it.

It's as if a weight has been lifted, and I'm no longer stressed about food. No need to 'sneak' anything in. I've only had a coffee so far today - I did go to the fridge, and just decided I wasn't really hungry and all the lovely food isn't going anywhere!

Those that aren't weighing for various reasons - I suppose you'll be able to tell just by how your clothes fit, which is another refreshing thing. I never used to weigh myself when I slim, I just didn't think about it really.
Weigh in is only every second week anyway.

I would be interested to see that knees what channel was it on?

I've been watching episodes of How to Lose Weight Well. They get people to try different 'fad' diets. It's very interesting. Watching people struggling miserably through the baby food diet or Dukan just reinforces my view that we're doing the right thing on this thread!

I've actually been really good for the past few days, planning my meals and sticking to them. I've had lovely things like hot cross buns and Wispa bars without blowing my calorie budget. Also made sure that I get plenty of steps in each day. Planning on going for breakfast with my sister at the weekend and because I've been good this week I can REALLY look forward to it without feeling guilty.

Oh, and I also deleted my ex's phone number this morning, so that's another 14 stone lost! Grin

flossisboss · 16/02/2017 11:08

Actually, I've just realised how often I say "I've been good" and I don't like it. I haven't been 'good', just in control.

Thanks Star. I didn't know there were HIIT workouts on YouTube, I'll have to check them out.

KlingybunFistelvase · 16/02/2017 11:12

Grin floss! 14 stone is a fantastic loss, in one morning too!

star, I feel the same about SW. It made no sense to me that I couldn't have an avocado without counting syns, but I could eat limitless processed ham and muller lights! It works in the short term, but for me just wasn't sustainable.

flossisboss · 16/02/2017 11:16

Sorry, but I just couldn't help but think of this Peter Kay thingy 😂

luckycatclover · 16/02/2017 11:19

Am I okay to join?
Sensible is the kind of approach I've been trying to for dieting so far this month! I've done the whole counting calories before and it usually lasts for all of 3 days at a time before I decide I cba to count it all anymore... and slimming world etc really isn't for me. I've lost 5 pounds in Feb but also been out for food twice this week so I'm not gonna be surprised if I've gained this week Blush

Planned on starting the gym again this week too but came down with a cold at the weekend so that's on hold... it's annoying it happens when I actually want to go! But if I can't breathe properly when I'm laid in bed I've no chance on a treadmill right now.

flossisboss · 16/02/2017 11:27

Well done on your 5 pounds lucky

Hope everyone with colds feels better soon Flowers

The advantage to me of exercising, is that it makes me aware of my body. Otherwise I have this amazing ability to not actually take any notice of it. Obviously, I gave to confront the truth when it comes time to buy new clothes, but I am not a shopper. Exercising makes me concentrate on where I feel strong, or wobbley or how I am moving. If I am focused on my body in a positive way, I am more likely to make positive choices - eat food that is nourishing and healthy or really delicious. Went to the gym this morning - not my favorite activity but there wasn't a class that I fancied.

Submariner · 16/02/2017 13:10

I'm really glad this topic about real food has come up. I felt this when a lady I know showed me her no caffeine no calories coke and said how it was really good. And in my head I was thinking 'but it's not real food, it's just chemicals'.

Now I'm not the bee's knees because I love full fat coke, it's one of my real downfalls, but it's also something that every time I drink it I just wonder what benefit I've got from it. It doesn't even quench my thirst.

I'm definitely all for avoiding the synthetic yogurts and diet chocolate bars and fake crisps. I just want to learn to be a grown up and have ONE serving of real, nice chocolate, or one packet of crisps at the pub without it sending me into a massive binge.

And yes, I want to eat avocados and fatty fish and mashed fruit because it comes with so many other benefits.

flossisboss · 16/02/2017 13:23

Yup, real food is always going to trump processed crap.

I also don't like the attitude of some of the fashionable new 'clean eating' gurus. There's nothing 'un-clean' about a bowl of organic natural yoghurt, a free range egg, or a loaf of proper unadulterated bread!

Submariner · 16/02/2017 13:49

I completely agree floss, or this whole thing of carbs being the work of the devil. We need energy, fat and nutrients.

Diemme · 16/02/2017 14:55

Hi, I've only just noticed this thread and would love to jump on board. It's pretty much how I've been trying to lose weight for a few weeks and definitely feels sustainable. Quick question about calorie trackers, I think it would be useful to use one. Only problem is I've got a Samsung galaxy and mfp is painfully slow. Does anyone know of a similar counter that's more basic and might run quicker?
