A support thread for 2017 dieters.

who is planning to start a new diet/exercise regime in the new year and what diet are you planning on following?

Not sure whether I should follow a particular diet or simply cut back on food, I'm not sure I'd know what to do without guidance.

Please share your plans.

had a blip today and ate a whole bag of giant chocolate buttons :(

but tomorrow is another day and I still counted it whereas before I'd not put it in my diary and pretend it never happened.

Bonnie good on you for recording. At least now you can look back on it and try not to make the mistake again.

Okay back to work today so first weigh-in. 15 st 9. Heaviest I will ever be again.

Breakfast 2x toast with marmite

Lunch homemade butternut squash soup, 2x curry puffs

Snack tsp houmous and carrot sticks, smoked salmon

Dinner tuna and cannelini bean salad with lemon dressing.

Tried to ring the counselling service to make my first appointment. Their opening hours are 8-5. I'm either at work or traveling and don't have anywhere private to make any phonecalls. Rushed home today to ring at 16:45 only to be kept on hold until 17:10 when I was hung up on!!! Will have to keep trying.

One thing which has helped today with my after work bingeing was to force myself to have a cup of tea before eating anything. This forced me to rethink if I was actually hungry or thirsty and then choose a healthy snack rather than pick up the first thing.

I need to get back on the diet wagon too. I lost 5 stone last year through diet and exercise but then plateaued and sort of gave up trying. I'm a stone off my original goal weight and I have a wedding dress to fit into in 5 months time! It zips up but the hook and eye at the top will not close. So back to calorie counting and gym to get this last stone off. I'm doing dry January as wine is my biggest downfall on diets. I'm good all week then out comes a bottle of wine, plus all the junk I've deprived myself of and the hard work is destroyed. Thanks for the thread, this is just the motivation I need.

CharleyDavidson · 03/01/2017 18:33

I have made a start.

I was 13.10 this morning. Which is disappointing as I'd got down to about 13.4 at the start of Dec.

I've had no breakfast (rarely do), a supermarket sandwich, fruit and a cereal bar for lunch and pasta with pesto and a tiny amount of bacon in the pesto for dinner. And 3 biscuits from the Christmas stash.

That's it for me as far as today is concerned.

I have a dress I'd like to slim into for a dinner dance which is 7 weeks on Saturday. I am always disappointed in myself in the photos from the evening and would like to be happier with what I look like. I have dresses from years and years going back, and would like to wear a gorgeous dress that I have. But it's a size 14 and at the moment I'm a generous 16. I have nice 16s too in case it's too much of an ask to slim into the 14, but I'm going to hang it up in plain sight in my room as inspiration to stay on track.

It's actually nice to not be feeling very full of food today and back to normal eating rather than indulgences. And I'm not the only one in work who is dieting post-Christmas so I'm in good company.

Dizzywizz · 03/01/2017 19:20

I've created a Pinterest board with motivational quotes on it, to look at as needed. And put one as the wallpaper and hold screen on my phone.

stillwantrachelshair · 03/01/2017 19:24

I need to join you. I'm usually about 10st 4 (and would like to be half a stone less than that) but am currently 10st 12. Weight loss is a bit more urgent than it is most January's as I have a couple of black tie events at the end of the month & need to fit into one of my usual dresses.
I have PCOS so struggle to lose weight (lack of will power doesn't help either) but the best way seems to be low carb/high fat so I am trying to do that. High carb/high fat over Christmas definitely led to weight gain!!

thumbcats · 03/01/2017 21:23

That's a really good idea Dizzy. Off to make a board now...

Stellar67 · 04/01/2017 05:32

That's a great idea dizzy.

I've been doing well. Today I'm going to have

Porridge
Ham leek and pasta casserole (leftovers)
Homemade Burger with loads of salad

And a lot of water

Snacks are what beat me so I'm going to go on Pinterest and look up some that don't involve crisps.

Dizzywizz · 04/01/2017 05:59

Today I'm going to have
Home made muesli with non dairy milk
Apple
Potato and leek soup
Grapes
Quorn spaghetti bolegnese (less pasta for me) with peas
Soy yogurt with blueberries
Maybe a small slice of Christmas cake at some point - I chucked most of the goodies but couldn't bear to chuck this.

Lucy7400 · 04/01/2017 10:31

Sounds like we have all made a good start.

I am a daily weigher. Today is 13.3 which is 1lb down. Yesterday wasnt as good as I hoped. A few bits of choc and portions too big!

bonnieweelass · 04/01/2017 18:07

okay day so far, soup for lunch, cereal for breakfast, not sure what dinner is going to be. Did have a few celebrations (lots of boxes of them in work) but still within my daily calories.

hayser33 · 04/01/2017 19:03

I'm not doing great but I'm doing dry january so that's hard.
I've made a couple of changes one being having my breakfast when I get up in the morning at 7am trouble is I'm starting again by half 10 and then having toast.
Everyone's food sounds nice ..is anyone finding it hard ?

thumbcats · 04/01/2017 19:11

I'm finding it so much better having my meals and snacks planned out - I'm so much less likely to overeat if I know I've got something else ready. I'd really recommend spending an hour planning different meal/snack options. It's made such a difference for me.

Breakfast toast with marmite. Only 1 piece today as 2 was too much yesterday.^
Snack^ 2 curry puffs.
Lunch butternut squash soup, pear
Snack 3x chocolates, smoked salmon (not at the same time!)
Dinner chilli and ginger salmon with rice, muller corner.

Titsywoo · 04/01/2017 20:04

I'm doing ok but I really need to eat more veg. I'm just struggling with tiredness and when it gets to lunch or dinner time just go for the easy option which rarely includes any veg! I think cutting down on simple carbs is important too. I've had quite a bit of white bread today and around 6pm I could quite easily have gone to bed!

Any ideas for quick and easy lunches (particularly ones I can take to work) that don't include bread. I'm not really a fan of soup or salad either sadly. I'm annoyingly fussy clearly! Grin

Dizzywizz · 05/01/2017 07:39

Had a good day yesterday, homemade muesli with hazelnut milk, apple, soup (no bread), raisins, quorn spaghetti Bol then some strawberries. Surprised myself how I stuck to the diet, esp with chocolates and biscuits still everywhere!

Same lunch and brekki today, tea is admirals fish pie. What's everyone else having today?

nicetoseeyoutoseeyounice · 05/01/2017 09:11

Anyone else managed to rope their family into healthy eating too? I'm cooking the same diet meals for my dp and kids and they haven't really seemed to notice. Granted they still eat the same crap for lunch and snacks whereas I'm banned from the biscuit tin! But it's going pretty well so far. My toddler has taken a liking to my snack a jacks and sugar free jelly though which are my only treats.

Sung · 05/01/2017 16:02

Not yet Dizzywizz - I am hoping that it will naturally happen though to some extent.

I am switching to a mainly plant based diet and that would be a massive transition for DH (big meat eater) and DC. DC are eating more fruit and veg but I still cook them separate meals still e.g. last night that they had salmon and veg with French fries whilst I had lemon and herb lentil salad.

Just a few days of eating more plant based food and I feel...amazing compared to how I did this time last week. I am still very much transitioning so it has been no where near perfect eating either. I have so much more energy and feel happier. YAY! I'm not weighing in again until April 1st but hoping that I will start to feel a bit slimmer soon too...

Lucy7400 · 06/01/2017 10:07

Well done nicetoseeyoufor losing 5 stone last year. Thats amazing. How did you do it?

I am 13.2 this morning which is 2lbs down. I had a terrible day on Wednesday, I ate my own considerable body weight in biscuits. Better yesterday apart from drinking 2 large glasses of wine and 4 Baileys! ConfusedBlush. I don't know what got into me. I haven't drunk Baileys for years. I woke up at 4 feeling sick. I am hoping the 5 miles I walked yesterday will have cancelled it out. Wine and Baileys are clearly too calorifi, what does everyone drink when they are dieting? I was Shock to see a glads of wine is the same number of calories as ice cream.

nicetoseeyoutoseeyounice · 06/01/2017 10:36

Thanks lucy. Just through calorie counting and exercise. I joined a gym and started walking more. I was on between 1200-1500 calories a day and let myself have treats but only if they were within calorie limit. Curly wurlys are still my go to treat as they as only 118 calories each. And a sugar free jelly after dinner stops he grabbing for dessert. Drinking more water helped too. Always had a bottle in the fridge so if I'm hungry, drink some water and wait for cravings to pass. It took a long time as I would stick rigidly to it for a few weeks at a time, have a bad few days and then start again. Just keep at it everybody. I'm back on it now and lost 5lbs in last 2 weeks.

PhyllisWig · 07/01/2017 08:58

Hello - hope I can joIn here. I don't have much to lose but have just had my first post Christmas weigh in and have hit 11 st 6 :(

I lost 4.5 stone over the last 18 months with a lowest weight of 10 11. I'm only short so this was still over weight with a bmi of just under 26 but I found it sustainable. Losing more was proving v tricky and I figured better to stay slightly over, be fit and happy than struggle.

Knee injury in October and a tough time at work meant a couple of pounds crept on but I went into Christmas at 11 stone. I then gave myself permission to go for it and totally over ate. It was a bit horrible actually and I could see myself binging for the sake of it but didn't stop as I was 'allowed'.

So New Year's Day it stopped! Mfp was back in action, I restarted c25k, did over my 10,000 steps and am doing a 31 day yoga challenge. I've stuck to my calorie limits and definitely feel less bloated so I suspect I've had a good week.

Hopefully I'll get back down to my normal weight and plow on down to 10. 7 which is my ultimate goal (again still v slightly overweight but great for me).

Sorry for the essay!

PhyllisWig · 07/01/2017 09:04

Lucy I don't drink much but vodka/gin and light tonic is probably your best bet calorie wise. I sometimes have a a sneaky can of Fosters (classy) but only 1. If you like beer but don't mind low alcohol, becks blue is only about 36 cals a bottle.

Lucy7400 · 07/01/2017 10:49

Thank you Phyllis. Well done on such a massive weight loss. You're only 7lbs more than your lowest weight and althoughit feels like a huge challenge it really is a titchy amount compared to the 4.5 stone you lost. Was that all done on MFP?

Stellar67 · 07/01/2017 11:05

Well done nicetoseeyou and Phyliss. People to aspire to :-)

I'm going down the calorie counting route. And ditching wine. Lucy I think I'm going to have alcohol free beer and maybe the odd rum and Diet Coke.

bonnieweelass · 07/01/2017 12:56

first week weigh in and I'm 3lbs down. Soup for lunch today so hoping it will continue to go down.

Well done Bonnie!! Onwards and downwards!

The end of this week was absolutely exhausting but I managed to stick to the plan and lost 3lbs this week. The two things which really helped were to have a cup of tea before eating my after work snack and to have my meals planned out. I really want to keep this up.

We got up really late today so lunch was 2 slices of toast and marmite!

Dinner will be beef stir fry with noodles and I'm going to do my meal planning for next week today.
