New Year Low Carb Bootcamp

1000 replies

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 29/12/2012 21:30

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas, and that Santa brought you everything that you deserved! Xmas Grin

By now, I'm guessing that many of us will be rather tired of chocolates and stodgy food. Mince pie anyone? Xmas Wink

So. The next low carb Bootcamp will be starting on 7 January. It will run for 10 weeks, which will take us to mid-March. The idea of Bootcamp is that we have an initial strict fortnight, which will see a significant amount of weight loss, followed by a more relaxed 8 weeks.

Overall, if you follow the rules, you can expect to lose anything up to 20lbs in this time period.

So who is in?

If you want to join us, add your name to the list and tell us what your aims/objectives are.

I will start ...

Don't worry Coco a few won't have hurt.

Sainsbo's have a jar of coconut oil in the world foods aisle for approx £1.79- there's a same size 'organic' jar in the oils aisle for £6.99 Shock

GreenyEyes · 30/12/2012 22:03

anew- hmm tricky, eggs are my breakfast staple tbh.

But I sometimes have cold meats and cheese with mayo, kippers, mackerel etc

anewdispensation · 30/12/2012 22:06

Thanks Greenyeyes. I am not a big brekkie person but BIWI's rules say breakfast is compulsory so I guess I will just interchange full fat greek yoghurt and cold meats and cheese. I am looking forward to this.

I see parsnips are not on the allowed veg list? why is that? Also are herbal teas such as green tea and mint tea allowed?

GreenyEyes · 30/12/2012 22:19

I think (and BIWI will kick my arse if I'm speaking out of turn) that breakfast needn't be a full blown affair, but that even a few slices of chicken whilst stood at the fridge is enough to kickstart your metabolism and set you up for the day (so that you're not craving the biscuits at 11am)

I still struggle with breakfast, but find that I can eat it no problem if I take something with me and eat once I'm at my desk (so been up and about for quite a while)

Re parsnips, most root veg are quite sugary (potatoes, carrots, onions etc). Swede is good though.

Herbal teas are fine as long as you're not sweetening them Smile

thenightsky · 30/12/2012 22:20

What's the total carb count for a day meant to be?

Yddraigoldragon · 30/12/2012 22:24

Quick note about vanilla extract - lovely to add to the Total yoghurt for brekkie. PLEASE read the bottle.. the little fat bottle that everyone uses and the vanilla paste that is now available has loads of sugar in it!

I have found vanilla extract in Sainsburies in little bottles (about £1) on the shelf with the food colourings etc.. which does not contain sugar.

I love it, use it in coffee with cream and it makes a real treat - but watch out for sugar.

anewdispensation · 30/12/2012 22:28

Thanks Greenyeyes. Like I said I am looking forward to this and cant wait to see the weight falling off and STAYING off.

I want to get down to 9st 7lbs. Was 9st 9lbs in beginning of November but now up to 10st 3 or 4 so count me in.

cocolepew · 30/12/2012 22:33

Oh kippers, I love kipppers.

froufroulala · 30/12/2012 22:38

Eek am I too late to put my name down? Have not read anything yet just posted to get on the list.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 30/12/2012 22:48

Thenightsky - we don't have a daily allowance. Just follow Bootcamp rules and you will be fine.

Re yoghurt - cant remember who was asking - but a BIG FAT NO to flavoured yoghurt! Part of eating this way is about breaking the addiction to sweet things, as well as the avoidance of artificial ingredients

OP posts:
Gilbertwasthebestcat · 30/12/2012 22:55

I hate plain yoghurt but I guess I will have to get used to it as I really want to break my addiction to sugar/ sweet stuff. Still can't get my head around all the full fat stuff though.

NoveltySlippers · 30/12/2012 23:03

Erk!

I don't want to jump ship before the ship has even sailed (in fact I've been reading the Gary Taubes book all weekend and getting very excited) - but I've just been googling and found that some people get dry eyes on low carb diets.

Am sure this won't affect any of you, but I've been really struggling with dry eyes for over a year. Have only just seemed to get it under control (tiuch wood) with fish oils. Have read that people upped their carbs back up to 40-50g a day and the dry eye went away.

I'm not sure if I can risk exacerbating the problem again (I wear contacts and it's been a real source of misery for me).

I may have to stick with a low-er carb WOE (eg. Low GI or Zone-type) and keep my carbs at 40g rather than 20g.

Will do some more reading. I'm a bit gutted, as I'm convinced that low carb is good for you, but have had such misery with the dry eyes...

(Sorry for long post!)

Have just welghed myself & now know why I can barely walk without getting breathless. Think I must be the heaviest here. Am 16'10 & 5'7. How stupid am I - no need to answer that.

caramelwaffle · 30/12/2012 23:22

Signing back in for second round of Bootcamp.

I'm in. I don't even dare weigh myself, I'm the biggest I've ever been Blush.

Bring It On.

ToomuchheuchatendofHogmanay · 30/12/2012 23:35

I make that 64 of us so far, woo hoo!!

Met a friend today who was talking sadly about having to finish up all her lovely cheese before she starts back on her WW diet. I tried to convert her, we will see!!

mumat39 · 30/12/2012 23:51

Loving all the ideas for meals, ESP breakfast. I have a quick question about ham? I thought processed meats were not a good idea, so when buying ham, what should I look for. I'll be getting ham, Philly, lettuce, and cucumber for breakfasts I think. Also, if I wanted to get pâté, what sort should I go for? My nearest supermarkets are sainsburys, waitrose and m&s food. Thanks in advance.

Panda, I also have a dc with many many good allergies. She's 5 now but I am so scared of her having reactions that we just don't have some things like eggs in the house. Just wanted to say hello and that I'll also be doing this without eggs and fish.

Good luck everyone. I'm a carb addict and am really hoping I can at least start this well so that I have some hope of making I through boot camp. Is it normal to be a bit ermmm scared of failing ?

mumat39 · 30/12/2012 23:54

Food, not good, allergies. Blush

NoveltySlippers · 31/12/2012 00:00

Hi all

Sorry, when I wrote 20g vs 40g of carbs above, I actually meant 20% vs 40% carbs!

:puts head down and keeps reading low carb book so she might know/understand what she's blathering on about:
