so knackered after first day back at work. Fell asleep before my tea and then again afterwards!

Tea was a chicken breast wrapped in ham and cheese served with courgettes mushrooms and peppers.

The wine didn't help, have finished it now so no more for a bit.

B: 2 boiled eggs.

Whippoorwhill · 30/08/2012 09:24

VNMum - thank you for fasting so we don't have to! Grin

I'm happy with missing a meal from time to time, mainly breakfast when I go the the gym, but I couldn't get along with full day fasts. Counting calories reminded me of the bad old days and going so long without food was triggering bingeing behaviour that hadn't reared it's ugly head at all while I've been low carbing. After reading some of the stuff on Mark's Daily Apple and Paleo for Women I decided that I wasn't gong to stress out about it and stick with the 'eat when you are hungry, don't worry if you're not' thing.

It does seem to be working really well for a lot of people though. Will be interested to hear how your experiment works out.

teaandthorazine · 30/08/2012 09:35

Off to Carlisle for a wedding and then onto Glasgow this weekend. Slightly dreading it as it'll be my first meeting with all of dp's family - 3days! no pressure then! Don't think I'm going to have an awful lot of control over food, but will try my best and will endeavour not to get too drunk Grin

Seem to be hanging on in there at 10 stone. Not getting any lower but I can live with that. Am I officially maintaining then?!

tiptoemum · 30/08/2012 09:39

Well I am 6 weeks of low carbing now and it is great! I have sort of got into the habit of missing breakfast because I don't feel hungry but eat a salad type lunch and then a proper meat and 3 veg type supper. I have upped my water intake which I think has really helped and I fill 2x1.5l bottles every day so that I know that I am drinking 3l of water. 6 weeks ago I weighed 82.5kg and today I weigh 76.5kg so a drop of 6kgs! My clothes feel so much better, I feel so much better! I have had some really stressful family problems during this time which I would have binged on chocolate in the past to help get me through but it is great to be determined and lose weight in spite of it all. I still have 2 stone to lose but I'm setting myself a target of Christmas which hopefully will be achievable.
I don't post very often but I read the thread every day and it is a wonderful support so thankyou to everyone!xx

vnmum · 30/08/2012 10:54

Morning all. Woke up today feeling ok. Not starving or anything. Ate breakfast because even though I wasn't really hungry, there was a niggle and I knew if i didn't eat after yesterday it would creep up on me and I would be starving so I had 2 rashers bacon, 2 eggs scrambled with cream and cooked in butter with 2 mushrooms sliced and cooked in cream and boursin. So glad I am not counting calories today Grin

NigellasGuest · 30/08/2012 11:23

tea hope you enjoy the wedding! You are about the same weight as me. Ideally I'd still like to lose another half stone but slow and steady wins the race. Perhaps you are officially maintaining now, and perhaps some more will drop off. I would love it if this WOE means that ultimately our bodies find their own ideal weight on their own, IYSWIM. (as long as we do our bit by keeping to the LC rules).

I gave in to my DD's chocolate shortbread last night and had more of it, much more! Strangely my stomach is no longer bloated this morning. And I still weigh exactly 9 stone 13. Hopefully if I just drink loads of water today and keep AWAY from the shortbread there won't be too much adverse effect!

viper I'm glad to hear your visitors didn't derail you! (Do try celariac chips sometime - you will love them). And that book sounds useful. I might have a little look on Amazon!

emmak86 · 30/08/2012 12:07

vezzie · 30/08/2012 12:48

Hi low-carbers,

I hope holiday season hasn't taken too heavy a toll (it has on me but I knew it would, being with 5 other families and not wanting to be a prima donna). There are some very impressive losses on here!

I mentioned Leon on another thread, a really useful non-sandwich shop.

www.leonrestaurants.co.uk/

On the subject of emergency meals when out and about, does anyone know how carby / sugary the marinades are at Nandos? (I have no urgent desire to visit a Nandos, just trying to build up a mental store of when-a-girl's-gotta-eat refuges)

Also, there is a decent looking menu of Pesce and Carne at Strada (if you are with people who are hell-bent on eating pizza or pasta) but I think each of the dishes would need some amendments or omissions.

I think we need to lobby these chains with the force of mn! What purpose does a honey dressing serve on what might otherwise be a perfectly good fish dish? I want more Leons (where you can just get something off the menu without feeling like a pernickety eejit because you are asking for this that and the other to be left out)

Also that weird pizza express salad dressing is so sweet it is of the devil, we should sort them out.

halfthesize · 30/08/2012 12:52

tea have a lovely time and enjoy the wedding.

tiptoe well done!

vnmum its interesting that you were not hungry after fasting yesterday, have you weighed in yet?

nigella I'm wondering if 8st 10 is going to be my final weight, as I just seem to be staying the same. I am trying to be really good this week to see if I can shift a little more, would love to be 8st 7lbsSmile

Breakfast - boiled egg
Lunch - prawn salad
Dinner - roast belly of pork and leeks

WillieWaggledagger · 30/08/2012 13:04

vezzie it's a good idea to list some low-carb friendly places to eat

it's only in london i think but black and blue is a fab chain for low carbing (steaks) - DP and i had a brilliant shared cote de boeuf which was very good value (when divided between us) that came with a mahoosive salad to share (i didn't ask about the dressing but it was creamy and not sweet). chips too obv, but dp ate mine!

BIWI · 30/08/2012 13:06

here you go, vezzie

Dail Mail article re IF....

BIWI · 30/08/2012 13:17

I was working on Tuesday in a hotel. At lunchtime, they brought us the bar menu. Nothing on it was low carb - all sandwiches, pasta etc. So I asked for the restaurant menu. Only low carb option was Caesar salad - but I hate anchovies, and it was made with an anchovy dressing. But they did do a steak - albeit that it was served with chips, onion rings and a salad dressed with a honey mustard dressing.

So I asked if we could have just the steak, with a salad. And could the salad be dressed with olive oil and vinegar only. Oh, and please, not balsamic vinegar. Charming waiter said yes, and took the order. Only to return with a plate of steak, chips and onion rings. Apparently the chef refused to serve it without, because it would spoil his presentation Hmm. The salad that came with it had olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

It's usually much easier than that. But I also hate it when you don't get what you ask for - especially as all that food was wasted.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 30/08/2012 13:25

Grr, that reminds me of a so-called chef I used to work with (it was in a coffee shop and all he did was assemble salads and wraps - the regular waitresses did it on a Sunday when he wasn't in, so it wasn't exactly Michel Roux standard) who used to refuse to change anything for customers. So stupid - it hardly makes for happy customers who are going to come back! Plus, if it was going to ruin his presentation, he's showing a complete lack of originality. Also, I feel for your charming waiter who must have been mortified. It's easy for chefs to refuse to cooperate in the safety of the kitchen, rather than when having to explain to a customer why they can't have what they want.

Halfthesize, DH just sent me that same article. I love how they always quote nutritionists saying it's unhealthy - the same nutritionists who keep peddling the 'all calories are created equal' stuff. Not that fasting appeals to me in the slightest.

vezzie · 30/08/2012 13:38

I have just read a long thread on another message board where people are very earnestly getting their knickers in a twist about the rights and wrongs of "fat acceptance". (The board is mostly US / UK, most of the people on this thread seem to be in the US.)
Despite a very subtle awareness about weight and all its cultural influences and implications, and despite posts both by self-identifying fat and thin people, there is not one single challenge by anyone to the false dichotomy between letting-oneself-go and taking-care-of-oneself" = eating-low-fat-low-cal.

These are the established terms of the debate and that there might be another way (maybe the advice is wrong! Maybe there are other ways you can take care of yourself! How can so many people be aware, be dieting, and be fat?) simply has not occurred to anyone. (a few brief mentions of turkey being padded out with corn products, but not really much beyond that)

I wonder whether the US is in a stricter media-strangle-hold by the low fat high carb lobbies?
Maybe their relatively worse weight issues make people even more afraid to question orthodoxy? Is the fear of dietary fat (being seen to eat it) even worse in a country where so many more people are fat, and they themselves are fatter?

(I hope nobody is offended by my use of the word "fat" as a casual short hand in this post. I do not mean anything judgey or horrible by it, I consider myself to be fat by the way and I apologise if I have offended anyone)

vezzie · 30/08/2012 13:39

BIWI, that experience in the hotel sounds very annoying.
I am too shy to ask for "the other menu" in situations like that, because it is basically the more expensive menu, and I am afraid it makes me look up myself. (Even though in a place like that I would happily save the 3 quid by drinking tap water)
Maybe I need to re-read the India and Neris book to get over that, they are very good on pep talks about things like that.

BIWI · 30/08/2012 13:44

I have to do it, vezzie - I'm so often out and about with work at mealtimes I'd starve otherwise!

halfthesize · 30/08/2012 13:47

TooImmatureTurtleDoves exactly all the articles are the same x

I keep meaning to ask, as I have changed my nickname is it ok to update it from mummyduff to halfthesize on the spreadsheet?

BIWI how annoyingAngry

Thegoddessblossom · 30/08/2012 14:41

BIWI that is really annoying. i would have asked for a reduction in price.

Am dressed in gym kit but haven't made it yet. Have had my nails done though....Blush

Lunch: big green salad, big dollop of coleslaw, celery and musrooms, and two mackerel fillets in olive oil.

am back to eating huge portions compared to holiday meals, but I still lost eating this way before so hopefully will be ok. would like to see the scales starting with an 8 over the next 2 weeks.

AuntieMaggie · 30/08/2012 14:54

BIWI Thats the situation I'm trying to avoid with work - normally lunches are a buffet affair and usually sandwiches. Even before this I used to take my own if I could but when its a week/half week course it doesn't work.

vnmum · 30/08/2012 15:00

half i did weigh this am and i had lost 2lb off my monday weight and according to my scales 0.5% fat but i know if i weigh again tomorrow morning it will be up on that because i have eaten today. I guess the more accurate picture will be to see what my weight is after a full week.

I'm still not overly hungry today either...strange

AuntieMaggie · 30/08/2012 15:04

I may need to take fruit with me for coffee breaks next week otherwise biscuits/cake might be too tempting.

AuntieMaggie · 30/08/2012 15:08

Oh bollocks just realised the hotel has an asian restaurant :(

Any other recommendations for low carb eating out in birmingham?

sybilfaulty · 30/08/2012 15:30

BIWI, that's really annoying. I frequently have a similar problem if ordering a burger as I want it rare rather than annihilated, and get really cross if it comes the wrong way and no one has told me. Usually they come back from placing your order to say that it can't be changed because of XYZ (one place told me that there was a law to say burgers had to be well done!). If they had said, I would have ordered something else. I would usually decline to pay in that situation, but it's not always easy, is it?

I am just sorting through some clothes and throwing loads away. I feel a bit sad that my wardrobe was so limited when I was bigger and my clothes often made me unhappy. Fast forward to 2.5 months on diet and I feel and look so much better and happier. I can honestly say I haven't felt deprived at all on this WOE and the food has been great.

Thanks for all the chat and support from everyone. Looking forward to chatting on as we approach LBD bootcamp. Who knows, I might even fit into one this year! 16 weeks to Christmas you say - yikes, time flies....

hazchem · 30/08/2012 15:51

I had lunch out today. There was only one non sandwich thing on offer. Pork in cider sauce, It was lovely and very creamy but the only veggies with it were carrots and potatoes. I managed to not eat any potatoes but by the time I got home (about 3) was starving so scoffed last nights roast beef and courgettes some nuts and some cheese!

Even though I was hungry on the way home I realised it was one of the least stressful meals out I've had in years. If I'd been following WW nothing there would have been suitable as all the sandwiches would have 15pp and the hot main dish coked with oil and cream!

biwi that chef sounds like an idiot!
