Please help! I'm in shop and have everything for LC lasagne except what do I need for white sauce/top?!?

Mmmm, pork in cider sauce sounds delicious. Must add that to my list of things to try.

I have another question for everybody.

Do you eat anything different before exercise? I went to a training session last week having had bacon and egg for breakfast and chicken salad at lunchtime and I really struggled. I felt quite dizzy and generally weak and not able to do as much as normal. My friend who I was with has been low-carbing for months and said she has almost fainted a couple of times so now always has some nuts or a banana before training in the afternoon. Any thoughts or suggestions? I'm going again tomorrow and am irrationally nervous.

hazchem · 30/08/2012 17:30

Mrs Hercule White sauce I make is Cream Cheese with grated cheese and a little double cream but I think i may be too late!

hazchem · 30/08/2012 17:33

viperidae I think it depends how hard you are training? I don't train that hard so say 20-25 minutes jogging (with a pram and hills) I don't feel faint. I eat approx 1-2 hours before and have some protein type snack/meal within about 30 minutes to 1 hour (depends how long we stay at the park!) I do drink water during the session but not too much. I tend to only drink if I feel thirsty.

EyesDoMoreThanSee · 30/08/2012 17:38

Tomorrow I will be planning an entire month of meals, I need to get back on track and I return to work next week after a month on unpaid leave so dh will have to pick up the slack. If meals are planned he will do the food shopping and cooking. I also need to LC adapt our favourite stews.

At the moment I cook just four meals on rotation!

BIWI · 30/08/2012 17:46

viperidae - what kind of training are you doing? And how long are you going after eating?

I usually go to the gym for a full-on hour with a personal trainer. Because I go very early (6.45 am) I can't face cooking at the time in the morning, so I usually have a bowl of full fat yoghurt. It's plenty to see me through my training, and I very rarely have anything else to eat until lunchtime.

How long have you been low carbing? It does take your body time to adjust to burning fat as opposed to burning carbs, and in the interim/transition period it can be a bit more difficult. But once you are ketogenically adapted, you should be able to train without any problems.

MrsHerculePoirot · 30/08/2012 17:49

Thank you! I bought double cream, cream cheese, cheese and hoped it would be some combo of those!!!

As an example, this morning I did:

10 minute warm-up on the tread-mill (speed 5.5, incline increasing from 6 - 10 I think)
TRX - two types of squats x 2, lunge and twist x 2
2000m on the rower
6 Vipr exercises x 3
12 minutes on the cross trainer, level 9

Having had 3 weeks off, this was a more gentle workout that I had been doing before I went away, but it's a fairly typical type of session. Sometimes I do high intensity interval training on the rower or the bike or the cross trainer; sometimes I do fixed weights and sometimes I do abdominal exercises.

Peggotty · 30/08/2012 18:02

Hi all. I'm a bit of a lurker on the low carb threads and I've found them really helpful. I've been low-carbing for about 7 weeks and have lost 18 lbs so far. I'm just wondering if anyone else goes through a bit of a stall just before their period is due? I had this last month and it was mostly water as I dropped around 3 pounds over 3 days Shock during my period. Also I have awful sugar/carb craving in the week before my period -although that seems a little better this month. So here I am again in the week before period is due, stuck at the same weight for the last 2 weeks despite doing nothing different food-wise. Rationally I know it should pass and I will lose the water/bloat/whatever is making me retain the weight but I find it a struggle staying encouraged! Any advice and sorry for gate-crashing the thread!?

vnmum · 30/08/2012 18:09

viperidae i usually go to the gym in the morning after the school run and workout fasted. I am usually there for 90 mins to 2 hours and i do full body weights, sometimes with cardio intervals in the middle and then do a hiit sprint session or 20 min run. I manage fine but i know i am ketoadapted and have been LCing since feb.

BIWI how do you find the TRX? DH fancies one to take with him to the giant sand pit and i think they look like quite a good workout.

AuntieMaggie · 30/08/2012 18:09

I made the asparagus frittata from the recipe thread for dinner... yummy!

How will I know when I'm 'ketogenically adapted'?

BIWI · 30/08/2012 18:10

You aren't gate-crashing at all! You are just de-lurking. And welcome Grin

The menstrual cycle does affect your weight, and you are likely to at least stall, if not gain, at this point in a typical month. Just knowing that this is the case should reassure you!

You could, though, try and drink a bit more water, as this will help deal with any bloating. How much water are you drinking on a typical day?

And brilliant weight loss so far!

Peggotty · 30/08/2012 18:17

Thanks BIWI. Yes it does reassure me that there's a 'reason' for it that I can actually identify but I still find it frustrating. I weigh myself every day and know I probably shouldn't or at least not during the 2 weeks prior to my period anyway! I drink probably around 2.5 litres of water/green tea/fruit tea a day (that's in total, not 2.5 litres of each Grin ). I've also just started taking vit b which is supposed to help with pre-menstrual bloating.

I just feel peed off that for 2 weeks of every month I'm going to stall like this! It won't be an issue once I'm maintaining but I've got another stone to stone and a half to go.

Thegoddessblossom · 30/08/2012 18:20

Made it to gym.

Since we're sharing workouts:

I do 20-25 minutes running
Then a 20 minute walk uphill or a 20 minute cycle
Then arm weights, sit ups and squats.

Was really pleased with what I managed today have not been for 3 weeks.

BIWI · 30/08/2012 18:23

.... but I am really, really stiff already! It's quite shocking what an effect just three weeks off has had.

halfthesize · 30/08/2012 18:44

Hi Peg and well done on the loss so farSmile

I have just had roast belly of pork with leeks and cheese sauce, scrummy.

www.ocado.com/webshop/product/McLelland-Seriously-Strong-Spreadable-Cheese/46075011 - tried this as hardly any carbs and it was so so nice x

WillieWaggledagger · 30/08/2012 18:46

I tell you what is proper depressing with respect to gym-going - dp can do a week's swimming and weights and he's noticeably leaner and musclier, the bastard

Takes me blimmin ages (clearly nature wants me to be squid guy)

WillieWaggledagger · 30/08/2012 18:46

Squid guy??!

Squidgy!

BIWI · 30/08/2012 18:48

Grin @ squid guy!!!

Viperidae · 30/08/2012 19:04

Shock at your workouts, you are all seriously fit compared to me! Having said that I have just started with a personal trainer after years of not doing any thing in particular (my last job meant I was on my feet all day so I was tired when came home and just got out of the habit Blush)

My friend has never been terribly overweight but started training twice a week and cutting down on carbs about a year ago. She has noticeably trimmed down and feels good so roped me in.

Anyway it's a slow process when you are over 50, very fat and asthmatic. My workout is warm up on treadmill and rowing machine, torture circuits of exercises selected by trainer that can be with weights, kettlebells, squats, crunches, plank, etc followed by treadmill and rower again. Total 1 hour. It's really hard for me!

Maybe it is that I'm not adapted yet. I'm feeling less lightheaded as time goes on so maybe it will improve. Think I'll have a few nuts or something extra tomorrow though just in case

WillieWaggledagger · 30/08/2012 19:13

Viper for years I exercised in the mornings before breakfast, but I can't do that on this woe (though others can). I now do it after work because the couple of times I tried in the morning I felt absolutely rotten. It did take me quite a long time to get back to the kind of levels I'd done on high carb diet.

Also before this woe I was crap at exercising in the evening as I was exhausted, but now I have loads of energy after work

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 30/08/2012 19:17

Viperidae, if it makes you feel better, the sum total of today's exercise was throwing a tennis ball in the garden for the dog. Blush Usually I manage to walk him, but as DD gets bigger it gets harder to carry her (she's nearly 6 months) and I was feeling lazy weak. I take her in the sling because we live in the country and none of the good dog-walks are pram-friendly. I keep resolving to do the Shred but not starting. Maybe when my dinner's gone down I'll manage it tonight.

Dinner was Toulouse-style sausages (v low carb), mushrooms and mange tout fried in butter and a failed attempt at neep mash. The bloody neep took much longer to cook than I thought it would, so I got impatient and blitzed it in the food processor, but it tasted like wood chips, so I didn't eat it.

BIWI · 30/08/2012 19:29

I'm not seriously fit, although I'm much fitter than when I first started. And over 50 too (53 today, actually Grin).

Sounds like you have a good routine there, and it's a really good idea to have a personal trainer to help you. It does get easier - although you will find that your trainer will ramp things up anyway as you get fitter! No chance of slacking.

MrsHerculePoirot · 30/08/2012 19:34

Happy Birthday BIWI! You kept that quiet!

Just cooked the lasagne - it was delicious and DH loved it!! I made little ones so that DD could have a little pasta lasagne in hers and she loved making them!
