Hi all! In my never-ending quest to finally shift the last half stone of baby (well toddler now really) weight, I am finally set on starting to low carb. I am a vegetarian, and whilst I have been lurking on the bootcamp threads, I have struggled to actually get my head around what I can actually eat on that one, though others success has been very inspiring!

I lost 2 stone on slimming world, but then stalled, and have been losing and regaining the same half stone for at least 6 months doing calorie counting on mfp, trying various calorie allowances, various nutrient ratios, various forms of exercise etc etc. I was running quite long distances not long ago, but an operation followed by a string of minor illnesses has scuppered that!

I have been inspired this weekend as I have been away with a couple of good friends who are complete foodies, been have lost lots of weight and look fab low carbing. We have been staying in a kosher vegetarian house and they have still managed to eat amazing food.

I am torn on the merits of low carb, but i really want to shift this weight now. I have just broken up from uni for summer, and want to go back a new woman! I have just ordered the two rose elliot veggie low carb bookson amazon, so hopefully they will be with me not long after I get back. They seem to essentially be atkin's adjusted for vegetarians.

I realise I am appealing to a small demographic as there are not that many vegetarians, let alone those that want to low carb, out there, but nevertheless it would be lovely if any of you out there would like to join me, or through in your two pennies worth! I don't want to distract from the other great threads running ATM as they're doing a gret job, but I do feel it would be nice to have one better suited to us veggies! Grin

Haven't lost any weight this week Sad - hopefullt it's jus a plateau. I was quite good yest, eggs for breakfast, crudites with mackeral pate and egg mayo for lunch and stir-fry veg (no sauce) for dinner, altho i do snack a lot on nuts.

WinstonWolf · 09/07/2012 09:59

beanandspud - did you mean "lots and lots of wine water " perchance?

Was 11st 5.75lb this morning despite porridge related cheating.

I don't think that I've managed to actually reach ketosis yet, but have been up and down in the 11's in the last couple of months due to too much champagne so the real test will be whether I get below 11.

Am currently sat in the supermarket cafe (walked here for bonus points) having a coffee and tweaking my list. I have no idea what I want to eat this week Confused

Maybe some veg roast with halloumi later? Tge infection seems to have moved down to my chest so would like quick/simple/tasty meals but have no appetite or inclination!

Hope you're all having a good day :)

WinstonWolf · 09/07/2012 10:02

Do you have a lot to lose Sparky?

I've lurked read through BIWI's bootcamp threads, and the advice is to make sure you're eating enough fat, lean protein, and to try and make sure that you'regetting most of your carbs from vegetables.

Are you perhaps not eating enough fat (butter/oil)?

If you don't have much to lose, or you've been doing this for more than a week (and the above doesn't apply) it could well be a plateau and you'll find that the scales will drop for you next week :)

WinstonWolf · 09/07/2012 10:04

Also: how is your water intake? You need to aim for at least 2l/day.

If anything, I think it's probably the water that's makig a difference to me at the moment.

RubyFakeNails · 09/07/2012 12:34

Thanks to the rather wet and miserable weekend I've spent quite a bit of time testing out some recipes.

Luckily i have some teen dcs to be my guinea pigs and I've found/come up with quite a few interesting ones if anyone is interested I can post them or are we going to start a recipes thread? I've got pancakes, a sort of lasagne type thing, cookies, brownies, a sort of pizza base and a mushroomy bake type thing plus a few others.

I definitely think water makes a difference, I drank 4litres yday, and even though I went a bit over my carbs I lost 2lbs which I'm happy about it.

My books are coming tomorrow so looking forward to that.

I've definitely reached the point where I'm missing Wine & Biscuit and the vodka will not stave it off.

newlark · 09/07/2012 12:49

My book has arrived this morning :) - just need to avoid reading it until I've got everything else I need to do today done!

beanandspud · 09/07/2012 14:25

No, right first time Winston - it was WineWineWineWineWineWine along with lots of water, honest Blush.

Back to 'normal' today. Had some cheese at breakfast as was running around and then a big salad with fish for lunch. Looking for some sort of inspiration for tea...

Have also discovered the Atkins cereal bars (about 3g of carbs each) which definitely fill the gap for something sweet and are handy to stick in your bag for if you're out and about and need a snack.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 09/07/2012 15:57

Does someone else mind starting a recipe thread? I'm out and about and not good at linking etc from my phone... Smile

Better day today. Totally on track with food. No more weight off so think I need to start doing some exercise. Took dd swimming today, but that was just splashing around. Was going to walk there but heavens opened so took car. Sad

If its not been started by the time I get back from work and eat I can start the recipe thread.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 09/07/2012 17:59

Don't worry, I'm going to do it now! I'm going to christen it with a recipe I just made up totally by myself [smug emiticon] with stuff i had left over in the fridge and it's turned out a bit like a satay...

Thanks Winston - i do drink lots of water, but also lots of tea. I drink Rooibos, black, without sugar, so i do include it in my 2L - more like 4L total liquid.

I don;t have a lot to lose, i lost 2kgs in the 1st 3 weeks, but it was the 2kgs that i had put on most recently. I still want to lose about 3 kgs more, but it will be the hardened, 'established' fat, iYSWIM.

It does feel 'wrong' to be eating salad with fullfat mayo, but i love it!

newlark · 09/07/2012 19:36

I've had a pretty good day eating wise but am not feeling great - exhausted and headachey. I don't think I've got as low as 20g carbs - I 'm not planning to count as it is too much faff for me - but I've stuck to the right sort of foods. 1 egg omelette with a little cheese and a veggie sausage for breakfast, Cauliflower cheese followed by greek yoghurt topped with a few raspberries and milled flaxseed, large green salad with vinaigrette with roast style quorn and a grilled mushroom with 1 tsp pesto for dinner, cheese and flaked almonds for a snack.

My diet would have been very, very high in carbs until a few days ago - typically large bowl of porridge/muesli for breakfast, sandwich or baked potato for lunch, pasta for tea, chocolate/crisps as snacks. Although I've eased myself in a bit by using up fridge contents it must still be a shock to my body!

RubyFakeNails · 09/07/2012 19:59

Well I've posted my first recipe on my way home from work and shall be typing up my others to post later this evening.

Thanks for starting the thread! Thanks

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 09/07/2012 21:32

Yeah ta ruby for posting those, I will definitely give them a try!

Hello, I'm new to this low carbing (also veggie) diet. Very new. Did a recipie from my new book, Low GI for Vegetarians last night and it was awful. Had to do another dinner for us all! I'd ideally like to lose 2 stone, but I can't drink water and have a bottle of wine a night. Grin I think I will order the Rose Elliot book as I have her bean book and love that. I don't like my low GI one but should probably give it more of a chance!

newlark · 10/07/2012 18:36

I've had another reasonable day today. Feeling headachey and a bit exhausted still but I suspect I've (a) not drunk enough water and (b) not had enough sleep. Today I've eaten: 1 egg omelette with a little cheese and smoked tofu for breakfast, greek yoghurt with raspberries and flaxseed mid-morning. Big salad with roast style quorn and avocado for lunch and big salad with mozzarella, grilled aubergine and houmous for dinner plus macadamia nuts as a snack. Good thing its summer - I can see myself eating lots of salad with nice things on - particularly when I need a packed lunch.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 10/07/2012 18:52

Hi lovely dogs!

Sorry you're feeling not so great again Newlark. Sad

I had a not so great day carbs wise, I went round to see a friend who has just had a baby today and when I arrived she announced she had made me lunch and presented me with a cheese roll and side salad she had already prepared. I didn't have the heart to tell her I was low carb so I accepted it with good grace. And threw in a bag of walkers French fries for good measure! Blush

Breakfast and dinner were a peanut smoothie and veggies sausages with cauliflower mash, so not so bad otherwise, but mfp is telling me I've had 70g carbs today, but I've still only had 1100 kcals so it is unlikely I'll gain weight even if I don't lose it as quickly as I'd like!

Really got to nip these little slips in the bud and get back on it! Only thing I am consoling myself with is that all the little cheats I have had recently have been very small ones, and nothing like the big blow outs I would have when doing low fat. Low carbing has certainly curbed my cravings, and I feel more in control even when I cheat slightly.

I was down 2lb this morning after a week of gradually reducing carbs and one day being strict on excluding high carb foods. Await the scales tomorrow with interest (but really must stop weighing every day - a bad habit Grin)

Suddenly - well done for sticking to the plan the rest of the day - I think that's the key - there will always be situations where eating carbs is pretty much unavoidable - it mentions exactly this case in the book (bottom of p.113 in my copy) - you might put on 1lb or 2 but it will be mainly water and will come straight back off again

carlywurly · 10/07/2012 20:26

Hooray, a veggie thread, please may I join?

I was 10st for years at 5tft 7, and a size 10-12 but have slowly crept up to a 14, and weighed myself this morning - 11st 11. Eek. Would love to get at least a stone off.

I'm not sure I can be hardcore about low carbing, but am planning on not eating any after 5pm, and reducing during the rest of the day to see if that helps.

newlark · 10/07/2012 20:37

Welcome carlywurly :)

I was really pleased to find out it was feasible to do a low carb diet as a veggie - there are some really good recipe and meal ideas out there which I'm looking forward to trying :)

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 10/07/2012 21:00
