Hi all! In my never-ending quest to finally shift the last half stone of baby (well toddler now really) weight, I am finally set on starting to low carb. I am a vegetarian, and whilst I have been lurking on the bootcamp threads, I have struggled to actually get my head around what I can actually eat on that one, though others success has been very inspiring!

I lost 2 stone on slimming world, but then stalled, and have been losing and regaining the same half stone for at least 6 months doing calorie counting on mfp, trying various calorie allowances, various nutrient ratios, various forms of exercise etc etc. I was running quite long distances not long ago, but an operation followed by a string of minor illnesses has scuppered that!

I have been inspired this weekend as I have been away with a couple of good friends who are complete foodies, been have lost lots of weight and look fab low carbing. We have been staying in a kosher vegetarian house and they have still managed to eat amazing food.

I am torn on the merits of low carb, but i really want to shift this weight now. I have just broken up from uni for summer, and want to go back a new woman! I have just ordered the two rose elliot veggie low carb bookson amazon, so hopefully they will be with me not long after I get back. They seem to essentially be atkin's adjusted for vegetarians.

I realise I am appealing to a small demographic as there are not that many vegetarians, let alone those that want to low carb, out there, but nevertheless it would be lovely if any of you out there would like to join me, or through in your two pennies worth! I don't want to distract from the other great threads running ATM as they're doing a gret job, but I do feel it would be nice to have one better suited to us veggies! Grin

*Just to add, I've had more compliments in the last two weeks than I ever had on any other diet, including Atkins. My shape has changed more noticeably and my skin is a lot healthier too.

newlark · 07/08/2012 17:08

I restarted on Saturday after a couple of difficult weeks with visitors, meals out etc and am now 11 st 12 (original starting weight a few weeks ago was 12 st 6). Even when I was eating less well I tried not to go overboard on carbs and my weight was pretty stable. My hunger levels didn't go haywire like they used to which was my main problem with dieting in the past so I think my blood sugar levels must be more stable. I'm away from Saturday for 6 days and know that will be difficult as I'll be on a group holiday with meals provided and there won't be any choice. Have stocked up with nuts and seeds and veggie pepperami-style snacks to take with me...

munkysea · 08/08/2012 20:14

Can I join in? I need to lose the stone I've put on over the last year and another half a stone on top of that. I'm up for a challenge. I've got the Rose Elliot book but I'm worried about being hungry. Plus, where do you get things like stevia and flax seeds? Holland & Barrett?

newlark · 09/08/2012 17:27

Welcome munkysea - You should definitely be able to get flaxseeds in Holland and Barratt - I have the "milled" (ground) flaxseeds which are much nicer to eat I think - I have them stirred into greek yoghurt with a few chopped nuts. It looks as though stevia has been approved for sale in the UK since Rose Elliots book was published so H&B probably a good place to look out for that too but a big supermarket might well stock it. I haven't bothered - I haven't been eating sweet things apart from a few berries occasionally (and the odd single square of very dark chocolate Wink).

Don't worry about hunger - if you can get through the first couple of days the hunger just diasppears. I've struggled with hunger big-time in the past which is why diets have always failed but it really hasn't been a problem. I've had high protein snacks available if needed - babybel cheese, M&S mixed nuts and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, cashew and almonds roasted with soy sauce - yum) and the odd veggie pepperami (from H&B again).

sparkybabe · 11/08/2012 16:54

Circuit and Newlark - you sound as if you are doing really well! I've have a few difficult weekends diet-wise, and yesterday went to 2 BBQs, so have eaten more that i should (and drunk!) but today was back on it. Breakfast was greek yog with a few blueberries and lunch scrambled eggs with boursin, and celery sticks with boursin.
The greek yog in Lidl is absolutely gorgeous, unfortunatly it comes in 1000g tubs, so too easy to eat the lot!

sparkybabe · 11/08/2012 16:55

BTW flaxseeds/linseeds are available in Tescos, as is Stevia. They are with the seeds/nuts/dried pulses, Stevia is with the sugar - but is very expensive and not worth it i think.

munkysea · 12/08/2012 10:29

Thanks, got my flaxseeds. I didn't bother looking for stevia, figuring it would be crazy expensive.

Diet starts today, my DP complained about the eggs-with-butter-and-cream breakfast, categorically stating it is not a diet, hee!

Hi, could any of you who are doing the low carb vegetarian thing successfully have a look at my over 50s losing weight thread and see if you have any advice or words of wisdom for me? I am looking to lose about 10lbs and like the idea of low-carbing but I prefer vegetarian style food.
The thread is Losing Weight over 50 - motivation needed
Thanks in advance

RubyFakeNails · 13/08/2012 16:22

Hi, how is everyone doing? I manged to lose the weight I wanted but I've just got back from a week in Sicily so land of the carb.

Am quite upset in that I gained 8lbs!!!! I don't think I've ever gained more than 2lbs on a holiday before and typically I eat pasta or pizza everyday when there plus ice cream. This time I was really good only had 1 pizza and pasta 2 or 3 times, a few ice cream sand almost no bread. Guess it was the alcohol and fruit that did it but am annoyed. Think this might be one of those diets with quick loss quick gain back.

I'm not sure if low-carbing isn't for me but I'm going to stick with it as have another holiday in about a month so want to be ready for that. I'm going to low-carb combined ith my traditional way of losing weight, (which has always worked and meant I kept it off) mainly because I like the idea that ketosis burns fat not muscle. So will be doing 2-4-6-8 combined with veggie low-carb which should be simple enough and incorporate fasting which is something I've become more interested in as a regular thing since watching a BBC2 documentary.

Anyway interested to hear how you're all doing and how your doing with keeping it off.

munkysea · 13/08/2012 21:38

I'm on day two and it was pretty tough. I've felt lethargic all day, which is annoying because I almost fell asleep on the train this morning on the way to work and wanted to go for a slow run tonight but didn't feel up to it. I've also had a terrible headache, probably because I normally drink lots of coffee and diet coke. I've also felt STARVING all day but fortunately not been tempted to eat any food that is not included in Phase 1.

I'm please about the 1.4lb loss this morning though. :)

RubyFakeNails · 13/08/2012 22:00

Well done, first three-five days are the hardest as thats you getting into ketosis. I'm bizarrely looking forward to weighing myself tomorrow and seeing the decrease that I know will be there.

Check out the recipe thread, cooking some low-carb concoctions like the cornbread has saved me. Meant I had cheese on toast for breakfast most mornings.

(Cornbread Recipe: 100g ground almonds, 2 eggs, 50g melted butter, teaspoon of baking powder. All mixed together and microwaved in a dish for 3 minutes or until spongey. I normally have this over 2 days.)

munkysea · 14/08/2012 21:11

Day three has felt so much better, thanks.

I hope you've done well.

sparkybabe · 15/08/2012 18:26

I weighed in at 59.2kgs now (i weigh in kgs so no-one know how much i weigh!) - it's a loss of about .5kg, so about 1lb. I'm happy with that, i'm now back to what i was before i blew it all on holiday!
Tea was leeks in cream sauce with brocolli - might have yog wih blueberries later, but not hungry at mo!

ghosteditor · 17/08/2012 19:55

Hi ladies, just checking in a month or so down the line - I've lost over 10lbs now and am lower than my immediate pre-pg weight Grin. Some of the recent pounds have been gained and lost a couple of times.

Am in a bit of a flap about what will happen when I stop, but I genuinely think this diet has changed the way I think about food - a major alternation from my carb loving self!

I'm not being so strict now and often have a tortilla wrap for lunch as a sandwich - but they're only about 20g carb. And as I'm breastfeeding I'm still losing weight steadily.

7lbs to go to my target weight of 130lbs - never thought I'd see that weight or associated clothes again! Wink

Good luck Grin

munkysea · 17/08/2012 21:12

Well done Ghosteditor. I've lost 3.6lb so far (only on day 6) but I love how the diet has changed my appetite and attitude to food.

BorisJohnsonsHair · 02/09/2012 13:50

Suddenly Hope you're still doing well. Just wanted to say that I put the crunchy granola recipe into "My Fitness Pal" recipes, and it came as being nearer 20g of carbs per serving, rather than 4.7g. It may well be wrong, of course, but just thought I'd mention that it might be worth double-checking all carb values if the weight doesn't seem to be coming off.

I've been pretty awful since the end of June, and have put on 3lbs since my last post. However, planning to get back on track from today; should be easier once the DCs are back at school. Hoping to lose a stone between now and Christmas, which will put me at my target of 10 stone 2lb. Good luck everyone Smile

Brasssection · 23/10/2012 10:51

Any veggie low carbers still around and wanting to share tips?

mamagmama · 29/01/2017 11:10

Hi there
Qu'ornes products re great low carb low fat alternative to the greasy omelettes etc. The fillets are amazing low in carbs (trace) and high protein, super low calorie and filling. I have just started back on Atkins after a long break. Steroid injections have caused me to balloon no Atkins is the only way I've managed to shift it in the PST. I have been veggie for 40yrs and longest stint of low carb wast 18months. During that time managed to sustain regular running and even did London marathon. Fill up on protein with trace carbs is the key! Good luck! X

Coconut70 · 04/02/2017 20:54

hello ladies,

just ordered the rose Elliot books from amazon, will hopefully arrive mid week and let me start then. I live in a remote/rural location and do online Tesco so I would be grateful for shopping list ideas/essentials that I could order so be ready to start.
Inspired by all your stories, I have a chronic illness and have been bone idle so put on 2.5 stone, non of my clothes fit and I hate it and am determined to loose it.
I am not really a cheese or egg fan but we have our own hens so ready supply. Looking forward to starting and have ordered ketostix too.

Anyone else starting next week? xxx

Coconut70 · 08/02/2017 15:09

hello,
how is everyone doing? ive got the two rose Elliot books and have started today. so far had an omelette and cheese then lunch almonds and a babybel. what is everyone drinking? I cant bear coffee without sugar or with cream xx

HRH76 · 10/03/2017 23:13

Hi, looks like I'm only 5 years late to join this party 😁, but I see Coconut is too, so maybe we can help each other?
I've just ordered Rose's book. I did Atkins a year or so ago and had a really good result, but fell off of the wagon and never really got back on it again. 😩. I'm also now a veggie, so this book seemed like the perfect alternative.
I lost 3.5 stone with Lighter Life 3 years ago, but have slowly gained it all back. I also turned 40 last year and was determined to be in a size 12, but it didn't happen! Anyway I have a few big things on this year, 4 40th's, one of which is a girls holiday in Ibiza, so I really need to do something positive for my health.

How are you doing so far Coconut? I found Amazon is great for products for this diet. I already had things like pure stevia and flax flour, so ready to give it another crack.xx
