Hi all! In my never-ending quest to finally shift the last half stone of baby (well toddler now really) weight, I am finally set on starting to low carb. I am a vegetarian, and whilst I have been lurking on the bootcamp threads, I have struggled to actually get my head around what I can actually eat on that one, though others success has been very inspiring!

I lost 2 stone on slimming world, but then stalled, and have been losing and regaining the same half stone for at least 6 months doing calorie counting on mfp, trying various calorie allowances, various nutrient ratios, various forms of exercise etc etc. I was running quite long distances not long ago, but an operation followed by a string of minor illnesses has scuppered that!

I have been inspired this weekend as I have been away with a couple of good friends who are complete foodies, been have lost lots of weight and look fab low carbing. We have been staying in a kosher vegetarian house and they have still managed to eat amazing food.

I am torn on the merits of low carb, but i really want to shift this weight now. I have just broken up from uni for summer, and want to go back a new woman! I have just ordered the two rose elliot veggie low carb bookson amazon, so hopefully they will be with me not long after I get back. They seem to essentially be atkin's adjusted for vegetarians.

I realise I am appealing to a small demographic as there are not that many vegetarians, let alone those that want to low carb, out there, but nevertheless it would be lovely if any of you out there would like to join me, or through in your two pennies worth! I don't want to distract from the other great threads running ATM as they're doing a gret job, but I do feel it would be nice to have one better suited to us veggies! Grin

I had Thai curry with the cauliflower rice for dinner plus some yoghurt and strawberries. I'm feeling a bit wobbly today so may need to up the carbs to keep up with feeding DD.

We don't really have any food in the house as I headed out today but DD had a meltdown and after an hour of shrieking we had to come home. Will try again tomorrow!

RubyFakeNails · 06/07/2012 20:33

How on earth are you managing to eat 1200+ calories and stick to your 20g.

I've eaten exactly 20g but according to fmp I've only eaten 500 calories today!

I'm not starving but am struggling not to snack loads. I've resisted going out tonight but I don't want to be miserable in doors.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 06/07/2012 23:24

Online shopping ghost. Only way I manage food shopping now I have dd!

Ruby Don't be hungryband miserable, the food on low carb diets can be so much better than rose elliot, don't wish to bang on but fo get the Celia brooks brown book - every recipe is under 10g of carbs and they are good. Had a another skim through Rose's book and although I was never a great fan of her books, her low carb book is dull, you'll never get through the month. I have posted some of Celia's recipes on the boot camp recipe thread - gnocchi made with soy flour and served with sage butter - it's delicious served with some broccoli and I like to cheat a little and serve it with a tomato sauce with a good kick of chilli.
There are brilliant egg rolls for wrapping fillings in, in the Idiot proof diet and stuffed courgettes, onion bhajis, celeriac bravas and lots more - most of those recipes are on their forum pig2twig.
If you have cranks fast food the aubergine and haloumi with coriander pesto towards the back is low carb.

Don't deprive yourself with Rose, there is so much more going on in veggie low carbing - this food can be so delicious and you need a bit of that!

MsRinky · 07/07/2012 07:29

Only Americans need to subtract fibre from carb counts. UK and EU nutritional info already does this.

SpringGoddess · 07/07/2012 08:09

But if you use a website like fat secret - uk version, you still need to choose the net carbs statistic, they still operate in the American way.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 07/07/2012 12:32

I went online to try and get a celia brooks brown book and they are all going secondhand for £20+!

OP posts:
SpringGoddess · 07/07/2012 12:35

Think I paid £14 for mine. I even tried amercican second hand books - is it available on kindle?

SpringGoddess · 07/07/2012 12:50

You can get access to a few of the recipes through amazon look inside surprise me - the paneer fritters are great too - kids love them.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 07/07/2012 12:54

No. Sad And sorry, they're closer to £30...

OP posts:
SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 07/07/2012 12:55

Oh, can't seem to do look inside on iPhone, maybe on full site.

OP posts:
SpringGoddess · 07/07/2012 13:19

You can get quite a few of the recipes just trawling through the look inside function. Had a peek at American prices $331 - what a bargain and they'll buy it back for $1.71 if you don't like it - sounds like a great deal! Hmm

WinstonWolf · 07/07/2012 14:29

Paneer fritters sound delicious!

Am down to 11st 7lb this morning.

Yesterdays lunch was stir-fried veg with a side of fried kale, and dinner was a frittata (green beans, few fresh peas, red pepper, goats cheese) with creamed leeks.

Am still not feeling well, and dd was vomiting yesterday so may have that to look forward to later.

Openly cheated and have had porridge for brunch today as I'm feeling so rough. Hopefully once this bug has gone I can get into low carbing proper.

It might be worth trying your local libraries for recipe books. If they don't have them they may be able to order them in and it'll work out cheaper than buying :)

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 07/07/2012 14:51

Wow winston, well done! Hope you and yours get better soon.

OP posts:
ghosteditor · 07/07/2012 15:50

Well done winston. I stayed level today, but have just done an epic shop for some ingredients that should mean I can give the recipes a proper go.

Where on earth do you buy soya flour? Have tried co-op, sainsbury's, and Julian Graves, but no luck.

RubyFakeNails · 07/07/2012 16:05

You can get soya flour in Holland and Barrett, I've definitely seen it in there.

Well done Winston, you all seem to be doing so well. I've just done the most mammoth of shops and have spent time experimenting with recipes. OUt to dinner tonight so I've saved my carb allowance for that.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 07/07/2012 18:42

Yes I bought some soya flour in holland and Barrett the other day.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 07/07/2012 19:14

Ok so was back on it with bells on today:

Breakfast - 2 veggie sausages, 3 scrambled eggs, half a tomato

Lunch - 2 vegeburgers with lettuce and homemade Caesar dressing

Dinner - mushroom frittata with lettuce and Italian dressing.

And I shall have a hot choc before bed! Smile

I didn't dare weigh myself this morning so I don't know how much damage my cheat day yesterday did! Blush

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 08/07/2012 14:11

Do you think we should start a recipe thread? And in it we should include any little variations/tweaks etc? I am tending ti find if i do the rose elliot recipes as they are written they just don't work so i have to tweak them a bit. We should also include carb counts i think! Smile

OP posts:
SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 08/07/2012 14:12

Btw i know this has been suggested already!

OP posts:
CutItOutAndRestart · 08/07/2012 14:23

yes do a recipe thread with tweaks Grin I always end up changing things to suit either what I've got in the cupboard or because I don't like a particular bit.

had quite a meaty weekend here but I have made some lovely coconut soya yogurt and I'm planning another butternut squash curry for next week.

oh and I've made more muffins - breakfast is muffins and yogurt at the moment :)

and continuing my coconut theme, I had a Malibu and diet coke last night but don't tell bootcamp Wink

RubyFakeNails · 08/07/2012 14:57

I think a recipe thread would be a good idea. My Rose Elliot books are meant to come on Tuesday and I'm struggling without ideas of what to cook.

Also I've come up with/found one or two recipes which I think people might be interested in, but don't want to post them unnecessarily.

Went out last night, luckily was Japanese and I will occasionally eat fish as I always hate the veggie options out so had Black Cod, Spinach Salad and Asparagus Tempura so I think its really only the Tempura that let me down but I had saved up my allowance. Stuck to Vodka Lime and Soda which is apparently 0 carbs. So I guess it isn't too difficult to dine out on low carb although don't know what I would have done in an Italian!

I'm a bit disappointed I seem to have only lost 1.5 lbs over past 2 days, so hoping it will improve.

ghosteditor · 08/07/2012 20:26

Ug. I think I've had my fill of cauliflower this week Envy [sick face].

Lost about 0.5lbs, had veggie sausage and scrambled egg for Sunday brunch, those weird lettuce leaves filled with cheese and soft cheese for lunch, and then most bizarrely, leftover Thai curry with peppers stuffed with cauliflower and cheese.

It turns out that a girl can also eat too much cheese Wink. I had to have a banana as a snack and I'm having strawberries and raspberries later.

Amazing how full I feel though! I keep cheating a bit which explains the variance in loss though.

This week I have a friend staying over then family for 4 out of 7 days - not sure I'll manage to keep it up!

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 08/07/2012 20:35

I had a good day breakfast and lunch wise, then went to mils for dinner. Would have been alright if dinner wasn't delayed til the tennis finished, but i succumbed to two very small glasses of white wine and about 5 crisps. Dinner was quite good (mil didn't know i was low carbing) as ut was kentil bake, veg and tofu. But then of course i had lemon tart, raspberries and cream! Blush But i think as far as cheats go it wasn't that bad i guess. At least i haven't had a full on binge!

Haven't lost any weight for a couple of days though, so i'm going to go back to being super strict and get myself back into ketosis!

Back from holiday and just checking in.

Just about managed to avoid carbs on holiday although was a bit sick of cheese and boiled eggs by the end. I did however drink lots and lots of wine so whilst I haven't lost any weight I'm not any heavier which is unusual after a holiday. I do count that as a success as my stomach is definitely flatter and I feel much better.

But... We had a night out last night so had dessert Sad and far too much wine so have had 'stodge' today to try to get rid of the hangover.

Fresh start tomorrow...
