Low carb vegetarian? Rose Elliot specifically.

Hi all! In my never-ending quest to finally shift the last half stone of baby (well toddler now really) weight, I am finally set on starting to low carb. I am a vegetarian, and whilst I have been lurking on the bootcamp threads, I have struggled to actually get my head around what I can actually eat on that one, though others success has been very inspiring!

I lost 2 stone on slimming world, but then stalled, and have been losing and regaining the same half stone for at least 6 months doing calorie counting on mfp, trying various calorie allowances, various nutrient ratios, various forms of exercise etc etc. I was running quite long distances not long ago, but an operation followed by a string of minor illnesses has scuppered that!

I have been inspired this weekend as I have been away with a couple of good friends who are complete foodies, been have lost lots of weight and look fab low carbing. We have been staying in a kosher vegetarian house and they have still managed to eat amazing food.

I am torn on the merits of low carb, but i really want to shift this weight now. I have just broken up from uni for summer, and want to go back a new woman! I have just ordered the two rose elliot veggie low carb bookson amazon, so hopefully they will be with me not long after I get back. They seem to essentially be atkin's adjusted for vegetarians.

I realise I am appealing to a small demographic as there are not that many vegetarians, let alone those that want to low carb, out there, but nevertheless it would be lovely if any of you out there would like to join me, or through in your two pennies worth! I don't want to distract from the other great threads running ATM as they're doing a gret job, but I do feel it would be nice to have one better suited to us veggies! Grin

Hello everyone. I think I might have abit more weight to lose than most of you Blush but this thread is great as I am vegetarian.

I have tried low carbing before but gave up as I felt spaced out after a few of weeks - even forgot my pin number for my phone and for my bank card!
However, I know it works as I had even started to feel a difference around my waist and I never felt hungry. I must have been doing something wrong though.

I'm starting again but wanted to ask you all - when you drink alot of water/fluid how long does it take to get used to? I'm rubbish at drinking but have forced myself to drink 1.5l of water today but have been to rushing to the loo most of the day too!

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 16/07/2012 15:05

Hi admylin!

I am a bit rubbish at drinking my water too tbh so can't offer much advice! I suspect that is why my weight loss has stalled a bit. I have a weak bladder and if I try to drink loads I seem to spend my life in the loo!Blush

OP posts:
admylin · 16/07/2012 15:14

I am hoping it might be abit like training muscles and if I keep drinking it might get 'stronger' iyswim!

Every diet I read about seems to say you have to drink loads of water, and I average half a litre some days then just before bed I realise I have to drink more but don't as I don't want to be up in the night.

Is there a Rose Elliot book worth getting? I'm abroad so have never heard of her.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 16/07/2012 20:09

I have only tried the recipes in the diet book and most are ok, although they don't always turn out how I expect so I have to tweak them a bit! The book is good though in the sense that it explains the diet. I believe she has basically taken Atkins and adapted it for veggies. Tbh most low carb veggie recipes I have tried ate a littlebit hit and miss, though I do have another rose Elliot book and sometimes her recipes can be a bit basic, and I feel like I need to add extra flavours etc! I like having the book as it gives a good framework and I adapt it to my needs. I think I would flounder if I was just winging it on my own, and need quite a prescriptive set of rules! Smile

Hi just nipping in off the Bootcamp thread - I have been lurking on here for veggie ideas
Just so you know MN are in the process of creating a low carb recipe section in the Recipe area.
Watch this space...

admylin · 17/07/2012 10:36

That will be a great help. I have no idea what to cook today but have managed to drink loads of water helped by the fact that I have a sore throat/dry mouth and the cool water helps!

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 18/07/2012 21:32

I was down 0.25lb today. But with all my ups and downs that means I have lost 5.5lbs so far, which is ok butnot that great.

Today I have done well and only had 21g carbs.

B - soya yogurt with linseeds and almonds
L - salad with toasted flaked almonds and cheddar cheese
D - tofu falafel (recipe from book) with red wine and tomato sauce (recipe from recipe book), watercress and mayo

Also had hot choc and a coffee with cream, and have had 2l water and gone for a run and had a poo . If that doesn't work I don't know what will. Grin

Wow well done Suddenly that puts me to shame.

I didn't manage my water yesterday because I was out and had an hour of driving to do. Tried to drink some after 8pm when I was back home but only managed about half a litre. And then couldn't be bothered to cook so ate soem pasta and roast veg salad.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 19/07/2012 07:35

Well just weighed myself today and I am down 1.25lbs which bring me back down to 11st 4lbs. That means I have lost 6.75lb in 3 weeks. That's ok, but still means I have only lost just over 2lbs a week on average. I have decided that as long as I am losing an average of 2lbs/week I will carry on, but if it falls below that I will try something else. This is too restrictive a woe to not be losing anything IMO!

I think I need to stuck with 20g carbs to lose any weight. Rose Elliot talks about increasing your carbs until you are losing 1-2lb week, but I was eating 30-40g last week and not losing anything, and even gaining. I was back to 20g yesterday and lost. It's a shame as even when I'm going slightly over on my carbs I still feel like my diet is dramatically different to what it was so I should still be losing...

I measured myself today and I have lost 0.75" from my bust, 1.25" from my waist and 0.75" from my hips. I dorsn't sound like much but I can definitely feel it, I can pull my jeans off without undoing them! Grin I am definitely very much on the cusp off a 12-14 now, whereas before I was definitely a proper 14.

Hope all you ladies are doing good. Smile

Oh btw, bit of inspiration, apparently beyonce's vital stats are 33/26/42. So her arse is bigger than mine and I've got bigger tits! or a fatter back Grin

Hi, I've just started the Rose Ellliot carb cleanse phase on Monday, so I thought I'd stop lurking and join the thread.
I want to lose a stone, finding it not too bad to stick to the plan. Although missing fruit like crazy, thought it would be the chocs, wine, cake, biscuits etc but no, it's fruit I am cravingGrin
Been feeling light headed and tired the last 2 days, hope that will improve soon. On the plus side, weighed myself this morning and I've lost 4lbs.
So a belated Hello from meSmile

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 19/07/2012 13:26

Hi alree!

I know what you mean about the fruit, I have never been that fussed about fruit til now, I think sometimes I really crave something fresh tasting!

The feeling rubbish does pass I promise! Well done on the weight loss! Smile

Hello to all!

admylin - the running to the toilet every 30mins does decline after the first couple of days as long as you're consistently drinking bits throughout the day rather than downing 1.5l within an hour after dinner because you realise you haven't drunk all day... Not that this ever happens to me, obviously Wink

Hello to alreethinny - Just to second suddenly, you should find that the rubbish feeling will fade tomorrow/maybe the day after and you'll find yourself feeling great! Congrats on the first 4lb :)

Congrats on the weight and inches loss Suddenly, it's all going in the right direction, and 2lb/week is great! I cannot get over Beyonce's stats Shock. Wish I had her 26in waist though Envy

The only problem that I'm having with this WOE at the moment is that I'm just not hungry. It's so odd as I used to be hungry ALL the time! Now I'm a bit about food. And it's not that what I'm eating isn't delicious, it's just that it's become less of a primary focus for the day if you see what I mean?

I compared my vital stats from yesterday with my starting ones and am down 8.5lb in two weeks, with 1.5in off my "waist", 3.5in off my hips, 1.5in from my not-quite-Beyonce-sized ass, and 1.5in off my upper thighs. I've also lost 1.2% body fat in two weeks Shock.

I have upped the exercise a little (did an 8mile walk on Monday for e.g.) but am still recovering from an injury so am still far more sedentary than I should be.

The real test of this WOE will be in the next couple of weeks to see if I can get below 11st as I've previously stalled at the 11st 2lb-ish mark.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 19/07/2012 15:05

Wow winston! Am well jel. Envy Smile Wish I could get those kind of results. What are you doing? Are you counting carbs/being more relaxed/eating lots of fat/calories/lots of water/ exercising? Tell me your secrets, seems you have the magic formula! Grin

OP posts:
SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 19/07/2012 15:06

Sorry just seen the exercise bit, my phone froze and didn't show me all your post...

CutItOutAndRestart · 19/07/2012 15:50

I didn't have time to weigh today and its that time of the month so I might wait until next week as I don't think I've gained weight since February and I'm in no mood for gaining weight Grin

I might do some spinach bread at the weekend, lived on that last time and I'm in the mood for something bread like.

with regards to water I take a 1.5l bottle out with me everywhere. I then race myself to see who quick I can drink it and refill it. It sounds bonkers but unless I turn it into a daily challenge for myself I just don't drink enough.

SuddenlyMadameGlamour · 20/07/2012 07:37

Sounds like a plan cutitout!

I am another 1lb down today so that takes me just under my lowest point and means a total loss of 7.25lb. I did a lot of heavy duty gardening yesterday so I think exercise is the key, I needed to get my metabolism moving. Did have a few giddy moments when I was exerting myself/getting up to quickly though!

Planning on a half hour gentle jog/walk today. Was regularly running 10ks a few months ago, but after my op my fitness has dropped, and what with feeling wobbly I want to ease myself back into it! Smile

OP posts:
admylin · 20/07/2012 09:00

Hi Alree the carb clense sounds interesting. Maybe I should get the book sent over so I know what I'm doing. I do remember feeling light headed the lasttime I tried low-carbing.

Suddenly enjoy the jogging. My exercise today will be cleaning windows, every single one in our flat is covered in pollen so I can't put it off any longer.

Winston sounds like you're getting good results. Are you doing alot more than the walking? I could manage to do plenty of walking and dd is planning on getting me running in the school holidays as she wants to train for a mini marathon around a lake in Hanover where we live!

CutItOutAndRestart I have been doing that with the 1,5l bottle an dthen the couple of cups of tea and a coffee I have every day should put me up to the 2l atleast. Tea counts doesn't it? In Germany when I've read some diets they always say coffee and tea doesn't count, it has to be water.

Just wondering - were you all slim before having dc? I was always slim even though I never did much sport (except dancing twice a week). Just after having dc I could blame the weight on them but that's ridiculous now as they're in secondary school. I've just never gone back to my old size and lately just seem to have put more weight on.

Off to start my bottle of water. Must go through this thread and write all teh recipe tips down too. Dc will be home at 11am today with their reports, last day of term. Thank goodness it's over with for 6 weeks!

ghosteditor · 20/07/2012 11:30

Hi ladies! Lost you for a while but am back now! It's still going pretty well for me, except the weekend when my family visited and we needed to feed a diabetic family member too - not complementary diets! I put on 3lbs Blush.

But they're back off and then some, so I've lost a total of 8lbs in 2-3 weeks, with some cheating. I'm breastfeeding and sometimes it's hard when I don't have much baby-free time to cook.

So I'm finally back to my pre-pg weight and have another 10-12lbs to go to get somewhere sensible with my weight. Oh and the last 3lbs put me back under a BMI of 25, which is nice Smile.

sparkybabe · 20/07/2012 12:47

Hi Admylin - I was christened in Hanover! I was 5, so 40mumbleyears ago. It was a little white church. That's all i remember! Probably an Army church.

I was 9st4 for decades, even after the 3 dc. In fact after ds3 i went down to 9st2. Then dh and i split up and i went down to 8st8, am now about 9st 6, so need to lose about 6lbs.

I wear a black Tesco skirt to work, size 10, which i have had to take in by about 1inch. Went to put on my size 10 grey Tesco skirt today (haven't worn it for about 15 month) and i squeeeeezed into it, muffin top and all. Really tight. No idea why; so i put the black one back on.Sad

newlark · 20/07/2012 14:57

I'm now 6lbs down in total in just over a week and a half having recovered from my 2lb increase blip at the start of the week but have now reintroduced some small portions of carbs (new potatoes, pasta so far) as I was getting a bit bored with omelettes and salads. I've cut down on the nuts and dairy a bit to compensate. Still trying to have two meals without significant carbs so yet another cheese omelette for breakfast. Feeling pretty knackered but don't know if that is increasing the carbs by 30g or so or just the end of term...

ThatBintAgain · 20/07/2012 18:08

I fell off the wagon last week for beer and crisps. Hardly ate all weekend though and put on 2lbs. Depressing. Trying to get back on it now but I've been doing the carb cleanse stage for about 4wks on and off and its soooo unappetising. I feel like SuddenlyMadame upthread when she said that anything less than a 2lb a wk loss isn't really worth it. I suppose I need to be rigid for a wk and reassess. Doesn't help that I've had an injury that's stopped me exercising (inc walking! Sad ) for over a month.

sisterphonetica · 21/07/2012 08:21

Hello!

I'm thinking about taking up the Harcombe diet. Anyone tried that? I'm a vegan so no idea if it works.

sparkybabe · 21/07/2012 13:19

The Harcombe diet? Is that like Lowcarb but stricter?

Newlark and Bint - really fancy beer, crisps and new potatoes now! Fell off the wagon myself last night, been really good all day, then had best part of a bottle some red wine. Feel a bit hungover still and not hungry at all. I have found that this WOE affects my way i metabolise drink - i get drunker, quicker! A glass or two never used to affect me at all. Now i am a total lightweight!
