Continuing Mounjaro...part 14

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 18:50

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

17 - Some of the places you can order from are:

Zava medical:

Thanks @ObsidianTree for the new thread and v informative first post as usual! 🙌

Hello! Suppression is good today - I got to 4.15pm before I realised I’d not eaten! I’m a thigh jabber because I had some rather unpleasant side effects after I jabbed into my tummy first time round. I quite like the slightly slower absorption rate from my thigh

BlackFriYay · 21/06/2024 19:05

Thanks Obsidian, as on the ball as ever 🙂

I've just caught up and can see some people talking about swapping injection locations and just want to give a heads up.

Injecting in the back of the arm killed my appetite suppression stone dead. No effect at all. I might aswell have injected water.

I got through the week on sheer willpower alone and it was tough. It felt like a real waste of medicine.

I'm not the only one who had that happen when trying out the arm either.

Everybody is different ofc, but it's worth baring in mind.

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 19:10

I have added some info on providers stance on maintenance into the op.

OP posts:
ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 19:10

@BlackFriYay I also felt that back of air did nothing the first and only time I tried it.

Thanks for the new thread @ObsidianTree , finishing week 3 of 2.5mg and a 5mg ready to go in the fridge 🎉

this week I’ve eaten out a couple of times and found it easier to make healthier choices. DP is very happy to share dishes which is great as stops me feeling wasteful!

weigh day tomorrow. Hope you all have wonderful weekend plans.

Newbie checking in 🙋‍♀️

1st Jab today

Sw 108.9kg

hoarahloux · 21/06/2024 19:32

Another newbie, first dose today. SW: 99kg, BMI 37.

toomanycushionshere · 21/06/2024 19:34

Thanks for the new post @ObsidianTree You put so much time and effort into the first post and it’s much appreciated!

First week here and I’m down 4.4lbs so far. Bit of an upset stomach but nothing else side effects wise. I feel really in control around food - quite the novelty! I’m incredibly impatient to get on with it and be thin NOW and already worrying about how to maintain when it’s done, which just about covers off my top two personality traits…

GreyFinch · 21/06/2024 19:37

Can’t believe we’re on thread 14 😂👋🏼

Choux · 21/06/2024 19:38

A placemark and a message to new joiners - welcome and enjoy the journey. For the most part we love Mounjaro apart from the odd side effect.

Quite a lot of people here are now on higher doses so a lot of discussion might be around maintenance, the benefits of 12 v 10 etc. Do ask your questions here but there is also a June joiners thread which might be useful.

ThirdStorm · 21/06/2024 19:42

From thread 1, somebody was planning to miss a dose on holiday? I was only away 8 days so I took mine 2 days late. I’ve always taken on a Friday but the holiday delay moved me to Sunday, I’m planning to take it Saturday - I think I like a weekend dose!

Moanranger · 21/06/2024 19:49

At last no longer obese - my BMI is now 29.9! I have lost 19lbs in 11 weeks, so roughly 1.5 lb a week, but not linear. I had a stall, and I also gained 1kg on holiday, but lost it in a week. I am now on 5mg, having titrated up by 3 weeks on 3.75.
Side effects seem reduced; no more constipation, which I found quite annoying. Still a bit of fatigue, but I can live with that. I have 1 more stone left to first goal weight.

Ghilliedu · 21/06/2024 19:49

Wow a new thread already!

I'm due a jab today but have been putting off taking it as we’re at a wedding tomorrow and I don’t really want to risk feeling rubbish. I’m not a massive drinker but I’ll probably have a few and I remember people saying they were pretty ill after drinking on MJ

however, the wedding is a full weekend job so we won’t be back til Sunday evening. Only 2 days late…but….i am starving. It’s definitely time for another jab. Should I just wait and have some willpower or maybe inject slightly less so I have something

Im so torn!

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 19:53

Welcome to all the newbies ☺️ good luck on your journeys

Me 🙋‍♀️

I am due to go away a week tomorrow and I jabbed today. I've felt horrific all day after moving up so no idea what to do. I want to enjoy my holiday but not go daft and undo the good work.

ThirdStorm · 21/06/2024 20:03

@AccidentallyWesAnderson i enjoyed my holiday. I didn’t feel I missed out but I made very sensible choices. I even said no to a mint magnum…. Don’t regret a thing! I hope you feel less horrific soon.

FlappyFish · 21/06/2024 20:17

Welcome to the new folks and evening all. My SIL has started MJ and she sailed week one. Day after injection 2 she messaged me and said ohhhhhh.

It took me right back and made me remember what it was like to get that first nausea and what witchery is this????

I also introduced flab jab to my American colleagues today. They loved it. 😂

guestusername · 21/06/2024 20:19

I took my pre-holiday jab on the Tuesday and flew on the Thursday. I took my pen with me with an open mind. I was actually quite miserable for the first couple of days as I could literally only eat mouthfuls so I opted not to take it while I was away but knew that I had the option. In the run up to the last couple of days before coming home I could easily have jabbed but I didn’t want to feel rubbish flying home as we had a late flight. I took it again the day we got home. I was two and a half weeks without it

Lastchancefatty · 21/06/2024 20:32

Wow thread 14!

@FlappyFish I am still waiting for that moment when it hits me. I'm week 2 day 2. Funny how we are all so different.
I inject in the stomach but if I start to struggle I will try the thigh as others have suggested.

allthatglimmers · 21/06/2024 20:42

Does anyone have any good tips for the burps? I was doing so well in week 1, I got cocky and ate awful food and I feel so terrible. The American forums seem to suggest peptobismol but we don’t have that available.

Pepto is a bit like gaviscon but it's bright pink and perhaps a bit thinner. Chew a rennie or a tums and that may well help

Rennies haven’t done much at all help unfortunately

Here you all are!

I feel less floored today than I did yesterday. Having to decide one more time on whether I'll take 7.5 or go back to 5.
