Continuing Mounjaro...part 14

ObsidianTree · 21/06/2024 18:50

Please note: Mounjaro will only be be prescribed initially if your BMI is above 30 until you get to a healthy BMI of 23 to BMI 25

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
https://glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after that a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. https://www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
https://medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

Some natural sources of protein:
https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

11 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), psylum husks(fibre for constipation), electrolytes.

12 - Drink lots of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

13 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

14 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

15 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

16 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

17 - Some of the places you can order from are:

Zava medical:

Thank you got the new thread @ObsidianTree .
Glad to see you're back home @MelissaLouRocks
Welcome to all the newbies.

Definitely a Scale Victory for me this morning, daily weigh shows that I'm 149.6 lbs, so under 150 lbs for the first time in many years!

It may go up over the weekend as I really haven't eaten enough for the past 2 days, but I'm taking the victory anyway.

ObsidianTree · 22/06/2024 07:50

MelissaLouRocks · 22/06/2024 07:41

Oh blimey, seems I can't win. I may sign up with another so I have plenty to fall back on, and also keep going with ME. I can't exactly afford it, but no way can I go back to how I was 3 months ago.

Well done for the fantastic loss this week, you must be delighted. 🎉

I forgot to say welcome back from hospital ☺️ glad you're out.

Isn't it crazy that's it's been 3 months for you since starting! What a massive improvement in that short time!

Have you got any consultants you can talk to about making sure you can keep getting Mounjaro? I suppose the UK are so slow it may take years before they prescribe people MJ for the other health benefits.

Maybe try Bolt!?

Morning everyone…
Some good losses been reported this week 😀
Im 3 weeks in and have lost 13lbs so far, I’m absolutely delighted!

GreyFinch · 22/06/2024 08:00

Amazing loss @ObsidianTree ! Congrats 🎉

FlappyFish · 22/06/2024 08:09

Morning fellow flab jabbers. 😁

I really hope you can find a way to continue on it, @MelissaLouRocks and that you’re out of hospital without banana and crazy other patients this time. The other health benefits for you have been astounding.

@ObsidianTree congrats fearless leader of the thread. I bet it feels fantastic but unbelievable at the same time.

@pinktransit that’s brilliant. I soooo get it.

TOTM here and last night I was hungry late so had two bloody ryvita with sliced chicken and ham and low fat mayo on. Bad idea. I know this. I’ve been on this for ages now. I can still taste it this morning and am burping it. Doh.

another article about the health benefits apologies for the DM link.

i am 5 weeks in and 15lb down but the difference for me is that this is the start for me and I know I can get to a healthy BMI for the first time in my adult life. 2 more stone to go.

King Kong drug for weight loss can also treat sleep apnoea

Experts have discovered tirzepatide, sold under the brand name Mounjaro, can improve symptoms obstructive sleep apnoea, desribed as a milestone for treating the condition.

ObsidianTree · 22/06/2024 08:13

Thanks all 😊

@FlappyFish it is a weird feeling for sure! Being this far into a diet and still having massive losses! MJ does work backwards sometimes!

What you ate sounds pretty healthy for a late night snack! I wouldn't worry about it ☺️ just hope the burps die down soon

Lloyds pharmacy will prescribe until BMI 22, they haven’t confirmed yet if it will be weaned down

Oooh spooky, just signed up with Bolt!!

I'm going to speak to my rheumatologist about getting prescribed when I next see her, but I'm really not hopeful. You'd have thought out of 7 consultants someone would show pity on me. 😂

The difference in 3 months is something I could never have dreamed of, even if I realised it would help with things other than weight. I'm actually getting some enjoyment from life again, which is something I've had very little of for about 20 years and is just priceless.

I'll just have to keep getting it how I can, but I certainly won't be going to Facebook for it!

spamm · 22/06/2024 08:23

It's taken me a whole week and one missed thread to catch up with you all. I did a week in Paris and am now in the Uk for an extra week on business.

I hate being away from my scales, it feels so perilous. However, I saw lots of people at the trade show I was working at who had not seen me for ages, and they were all commenting on how well I looked. Except for one woman who sat next to me and just exclaimed: Blimey, you've lost a ton of weight. I just said yes, and went quiet. It is nice to have the comments, but it can feel so embarrassing as well - like there is a subtext that says: don't know why you let yourself get to that state in the first place!

I did my first 10mg on Wednesday , and I am not sure if it is all the time on my feet at the trade show and the ton of steps every day, or side effects from the jab, but I am achey all over and cannot sleep more than 5 hours a night. After close to 4 months on 7.5, I had forgotten that feeling of aching so much. But appetite suppression is pretty good and no other serious side effects so far.

@ObsidianTree and @lurkylurk - this dates back to thread 12, so sorry for the delay in responding, but I don't think I am going to try and order in the UK. I have met my insurance deductible so my jabs are now free in the US, so would not be saving anything, and supply seems to be improving.

@ObsidianTree - that is an amazing weight loss - well done!

@MelissaLouRocks - glad you are home again and with more weight loss. Amazing!

Great to see so many new starters. And well done to everyone on their losses! Amazing.

MelissaLouRocks · 22/06/2024 08:25

Thank you @FlappyFish (sorry, I keep wanting to call you Flaps 😂), thankfully I became the most successful member of the escape committee last night. 😁

ObsidianTree · 22/06/2024 08:30

@spamm I would say the aches, lethargy is the 10mg. It does knock you for sure! Hope you feel better soon. I know what you mean about the comments on weight, I think I clam up as I don't want to have to deal with questions. So I'd prefer if no one said anything!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 22/06/2024 08:38

Well done to everyone on their losses.

I have targeted losing 0.5kg a week and so far I’ve exceeded that. I’d set myself an interim goal of losing 3.5kg by a family event in July and I’ve passed that a month early. 4th week on 2.5 so I will bonus dose next week. Hoping to move up to 3.75 for a bit before going to 5. I have my next pen ready and will order another soon. I want to be registered with some of the pharmacies that have better maintenance whilst my BMI is still above 30.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 22/06/2024 08:42

@ObsidianTree that's a great loss this week, congrats. How are you doing on 10mg? I'm moving up tho 10 this weekend. Might do it today instead of tomorrow so I have more time to recover for work on Monday if things get bad 😄

Glad to hear supply is getting better @spamm. Totally get your comment about the subtext you mentioned. It's definitely implied by some isn't it 😓.

Took a day off work yesterday and had a day trip to Whitby. Although I didn't have anything healthy, everything was in moderation, I even shared my free birthday cream eclair from Greggs with DP. My toddler insisted I carry him all the way up the 199 steps to the abbey so I'd better have lost weight from that on my next weigh in.

Had Pizza Hut for tea and had a 6 inch pizza with half a portion of fries (toddler stole half a portion) and I was fine - usually we would get lots of sides and my greed really shows.

I'm not sure if this will work as the Times has a paywall, but let me know if it doesn't and I'll paste the article.

It was in Thursday's edition, talking about clamping down on prescribing. Labour saying they will look at it urgently after election. Let's hope it's just the idiots they clamp down on.

DesparatePragmatist · 22/06/2024 08:48

Blimey, I had a busy week and missed the whole of Thread 13!

Partway through Wk 8 here and currently at 8kg off, so I'm still in that slow and steady loser camp and very happy with it.

Does that look like some new intel on maintenance management from some of the providers OP? 6 months maintenance dose and then review seems much better than being cut off at BMI 25. I have a way to go before needing to access this but it seems like progress.

Well done for all the triumphs and courage to all the stallers and starters!

Just wanted to pop on and say Hi this morning.

I've been on ozempic for 16months, lost 65lbs, but have pretty much stalled for the last six months, so I'm making the switch to Mounjaro in the hope it will give me a bit of a kickstart.

Your threads move so fast, I remember the ozempic ones being like this in Spring 23. 😂

butterfly0404 · 22/06/2024 09:01

12 hours after my first dose ar 2.5, feeling a bit burpy and mild heartburn. Definitely not feeling hungry this morning, I'll give breakfast a miss and try and get in a boiled egg and some protein at lunchtime. Off to a mini festival later this afternoon where there will be food vans and beer, not feeling like I want it :-)

Abigailandthefoxes · 22/06/2024 09:12

took the 3.5mg on Thursday had the weirdest night sleep last night awake every half hour and only got to proper sleep about 4 I also feel like I’ve got a mild cold

I suppose I am in two minds on this. Obviously it shouldn't be sold to people in a healthy BMI, but I can't imagine the pharmacies will cope if they have to start meeting people in person to give them the meds. Not sure I want too much scuitney when approaching goal if I want to get to BMI 22/33!

How many threads did the ozempic threads get to?

Today's is my second full day, after injecting 2.5 on Thursday evening.

I didn't feel hungry all of yesterday. I had Greek yoghurt for breakfast and fish wrap for dinner. Didn't feel at all interested in eating anything else, even though I was WFH which is she. I usually snack endlessly.

I had a horrible headache last night which didn't clear even with ibuprofen. But had an early night and slept like a baby.

I've woken up feeling bright and full of energy which is completely alien to me! I'm usually a sleepy grumpy sloth in the morning.

I'm out to lunch today. we usually get through gallons of wine, so it might be tricky hiding my lack of alcoholic drinks.

My starting weight was 16st13lb. I've got a very long way to go. But my health needs me to succeed at this.

KrankyKumquat · 22/06/2024 09:31

Morning all.
Weigh in this morning. Slightly disappointed as I reckon one good poo and I'd have been in the 13's. Still, 6 weeks done and 18lbs down so can't complain. 1st week of 5mg has been fine, no side effects other than familiar leg ache on day 2 - I'm very lucky in that regard. As an added bonus, my hot flushes have entirely disappeared since being on MJ (I can't take HRT) which is great but more than a little weird. Oh, and as a former bottle of wine a day alcoholic drinker, I'm still off the booze 😊
