Please note: Mounjaro can only be taken if your BMI is above 30.

Pointers for newbies:

1 - For taking your first dose you need to twist the pen a lot to get to 1! The instructions say prime each time you take a dose, but actually Eli Lilly have confirmed you only need to prime for the first ever use of a pen. (The video posted says every use, but this isn't true!)

2 - When injecting, hold down the button until the number goes back to 0. Once at 0, keep holding down the button and count to 5 with the needle still in so no medication is lost!

3 - Your first dose may not have an immediate effect. For some people the effects build slowly. It could take 3 or 4 days to notice anything, it could take a few weeks. Some people don't feel the meds working until they get to 5mg. See titration chart which shows how the medication builds up in your system. Also below you can plot the effect of your doses.
glp1plotter.com/

4 - 2.5mg isn't a therapeutic dose, meaning you aren’t meant to lose on 2.5mg. You need to start on 2.5mg to get your body used to the drug and gradually introduce it into your system and get used to any side effects.

5 - Not everyone loses a lot in the first few weeks. Don't feel discouraged if you don't lose a lot initially. Again, you might need a higher dose to start losing. Also, inches can be lost without anything showing on the scales. Start your journey by taking measurements and check them as you go along.

6 - If you do lose a lot in the first few weeks, please don't assume you will continue losing at this rate. The first few weeks it is usually water weight that is lost, after than a good weight loss is about 2lbs a week. Some weeks you might not lose anything, but this is ok too…again, taking measurements might show inches lost instead.

7 - Constipation, coldness, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, aches, are side effects. There may be be other side effects also. Read info here :

www.medicines.org.uk/emc/product/15481/pil#about-medicine

8 - Once you take your first dose you can choose to keep your pen in the fridge or somewhere else. It's up to you.

9 - Don't reuse any needles as this could risk infection. If you damage a needle or one isn't working, you can buy a pack of about 100 spares. www.chemist-4-u.com/carepoint-pen-needles-31g-4mm-pack-of-100?gclid=Cj0KCQjwiYOxBhC5ARIsAIvdH51rLZBVFQxuvS7mDJooegtK8BMiyT0PwREMRHhH_1atfQIo8TEbsmkaAkA0EALw_wcB

Also there is a 5th dose in each pen. To extract it you can either try a hard twist or use an insulin needle.
medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles

10 - Protein is important as eating less protein can cause muscle wastage and hair loss. Try to have at least 100g a day.

11 - Some natural sources of protein:
www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/best-sources-protein
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321522#high-protein-foods

12 - You can use supplements, some that people use are magnesium(for sleep and constipation), protein(to reduce muscle wastage), collagen (skin elasticity), aloe vera(for constipation), electrolytes.

13 - Drink lota of water. Water helps with the weight loss. Drink at least 2ltrs a day. Preferably 3ltrs.

14 - Don't be afraid to feel hungry. It is entirely normal and healthy to feel hungry. Just eat something. Treat it as an opportunity to start good habits around hunger. Eat a nice balanced snack or a meal if it's a meal time. It's ok.

15 - Does it makes any difference where you inject? yes it does! Drugs get absorbed at different rates depending on injection site

In order of fastest absorption, it goes:
• Tummy
• Arms
• Thighs
furthet reading about injection sites and the effects: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/316618

16 - Abdominal side-effects are much easier to control with smaller meals. For example, having 4 small meals in the day vs 2 big meals can have an improvement in nausea and burps.

17 - You can track your calories / protein on apps such as My fitnessPal, Carb Manager or Nutracheck. Nutracheck is quite useful and easy to find foods /build recipes.

18 - Some of the places you can order from are:

MedExpress 2.5mg and 5mg. £149.99. 7.5mg £169. Use code STARTNOW. Ask for other codes if that doesn't work.
The Family Chemist 2.5mg and 5mg -£149. 7.5mg £169.
Simple online pharmacy - £159 2.5mg £179 5mg
Bolt pharmacy 2.5mg £125, 5mg £179. 7.5mg £189
Asda 2.5mg and 5mg £184. 7.5mg £189
Boots £219 +
Chemist4U £179 +
Superdrugs

19 - If you want to switch suppliers, make sure you have pics of your Mounjaro box with your name and dose. This will come in useful when other suppliers ask for evidence.

MedExpress seem to have just joined TopCashback with a new customer discount of 10% - I that's related...

I chanced it last time I ordered and they declined it immediately even though it was only a couple of quid, so I doubt they'll ever let us benefit from cash back unfortunately.

lurkylurk · 29/05/2024 16:11

@Pinkbendyman

Try changing the needle, it could possibly have got bent on the way in and so not penetrated the seal on the pen.

ObsidianTree · 29/05/2024 16:16

Sabblue · 29/05/2024 12:06

@ObsidianTree can I just ask was this your first order from medexpress? Just tried using this discount code and it rejected saying its only for new users? Thanks

Hey, no it wasn't my first order. So very strange that it's not worked. Hopefully they haven't closed it already!

This is most likely. I went through three needles on my last jab! I’m getting new ones sent, which bulks up my needle stock nicely.

Wonkypictureframe · 29/05/2024 16:23

I think it feels very likely that the prices are going to drop on these meds very soon across the board, which is why the discount codes are disappearing. Hopefully quickly given that some of us are having to pay the higher price right now.

The little buggers!

Damn. I added the code but haven't purchased yet. Was going to wait until pay day and I'm back in England. Hope as it's on my basket it will still work in a few days!

Thank you, I’ll try that.

WoolyMammoth55 · 29/05/2024 16:36

@Pinkbendyman my understanding is that the first thing to try is swapping to a new needle - in case the blockage is in the needle not the pen.

If it still doesn't work then get on to Asda customer services ASAP!

Depending on their response, if you have a pharmacy near you, then you could buy disposable insulin needles like these:
medbasic.co.uk/bd-micro-fine-30g-1ml-syringes-needles
and withdraw the dose you need (0.6m would be a full dose). I used one of these to get my "bonus" 5th dose and found it very easy to do.

But that's kind of a hack and you shouldn't really have to do that!

Best of luck.

Soukmyfalafel · 29/05/2024 16:39

@GingerNugget I think the 30 BMI to start and 25 BMI cut off is causing a lot of bad behaviour too. It makes people stockpile as most people probably want to end up a bit lower than 25 to give a little leeway with gain, and I personally wouldn't want to get back to the 30 BMI I started with to start the treatment again if i needed to. I think you should be able to get a short course of treatment if you hit 27.5 again for a couple of months, rather than ger obese first.

I am quite keen to come off MJ now though as my teeth just feel so sensitive on it and i'm concerned what it is doing to them and it is giving me jaw tension. I will be glad to see the back of the Lemonady eggs burps too!

My strategy for maintaining I will be eating protein based meals for breakfast and lunch and allowing carbs in evening as they will be the hardest to resist as that is the family meal. I have a lot more awareness of where the calories come from now (carbs) and aim to calorie count most days still. I hope that keeps the gain at bay. I'm going to save my pen I might not need until next winter if I gain then and have a mini diet to shed any I might gain from lack of exercise. I find it harder to exercise in the dark and the rain! I like exercise, but it's hard to fit around work and 2 kids, one of which has complex needs.

The code looked like it worked when added to the basket first but I went back as couldn’t decide if I should go with 5mg or 7,5mg and when I finally decided on 7,5 mg and press pay now just then it said that the coupon can’t be accepted and is for new users only. Wonder if they put so discount code in June and its wort the wait but need new pen next week

@AgathaMystery

Glad you're having a lovely time! Re. family noticing, they may have noticed and just don't want to be passing comments on people's bodies?

Also what I've noticed is that when I was fairly slim, losing 10 pounds would make a massive difference, whereas now, I've lost 10 pounds and 2 inches off my waist and no-one would know. Even I wouldn't know if my belt and the scales weren't telling me!

I suspect I'll need to have lost at least 2, maybe even 2 and a half stone before it's noticeable, and before I go down a dress size (I'm tall). There is a tipping point where your losses get more and more noticeable, even when they are smaller losses I think.

Oh this annoys me. I could lose 2 stone without anyone noticing but you can bet your life they'd all notice if I gained 5lb! What is that all about Grin

I'll go straight to checkout when I am ready. The coupon is still showing for now. So will hope for the best. If they remove it before I check out, I'll got to family chemist!

Isitovernow123 · 29/05/2024 18:37

Hey all, just joining in as I’ve found this thread a really good read (and thanks for the extra dose!).

Started MJ 4 weeks ago. I’m a very active person but I love to eat and drink (think large portions, McDonald’s and Gail’s bakery for snacks, good red wine or IPA) which has prevented me from running to get a specific time.

SW 15 st 12lb
CW 14st 13lbs.
Target 12 st 7lbs

I do a lot of exercise (walking dog twice a day, 30-50 miles a week running) and the MJ has taken away my appetite from day 1 @ 2.5mg.

I felt hungry mid week 3 so took a second dose which worked really well. Have just received the 5mg which I’ll start on Sunday, but at 3.75mg.

My only real side effect is the lethargy when I now run as I’m not necessarily eating quite enough but I’m working on that. Long run on Sunday, I’m forcing toast in to ensure I don’t struggle late on in the run.

Decided to have some sweet chilli crisps last night - the fat just went straight through if you get my meaning.

good luck all!

BMI start was 34

whatisontk · 29/05/2024 18:57

My first pen has arrived, I'm scared to take it tonight because I've had a heavy meal and also work tomorrow so might wait until Friday night to start.

Waspwine · 29/05/2024 19:11

Tarsandcase · 29/05/2024 14:20

I'll be moving up to 5mg on Friday! I'm really hoping I don't have any awful symptoms.

Me too! With 2.5 I’ve had a few side effects on and off around three day after injection but nothing I couldn’t handle so I’m hoping for the same 🙏🏽.

Not seen discount codes. But it's £20 cheaper than MedExpress without a code. So if MedExpress stop the codes, I might as well go to family chemist

Sorry i thought med express was £189 for 10mg? Have they put the price down?

Waspwine · 29/05/2024 19:23

@peachbelly you’ve got this! I’m 45 and a fair few stone to loose. It’s coming off very slowly but that’s ok as long as it’s coming off. I just keep thinking ahead and know I’ll eventually get there :)

Sye · 29/05/2024 19:35

Newbie in coming- can anyone help with any of the following.

2nd wk - 2.5 mj
stomach cramps - any tips on what to do, feels like something is going to happen but doesn’t.
Trapped wind 🤢 - again any tips
Sleeping - this is actually a lack of sleep, feels like I’ve taken something other than Mj and I’m in the wide awake club !

lurkylurk · 29/05/2024 19:36

@ObsidianTree

It is £189 at MedExpress, £169 at The Family Chemist. The Family Chemist is £25 cheaper for 12.5 and 15 too, so as you say, if no more MedExpress codes, may as well switch.

CiderJabs · 29/05/2024 19:36

@Sye I take aloe Vera tablets every night and also senna tablets every 2-3 days if I don't go. Constipation has been the worse thing for me.
I've also started focusing on eating more fibre and drinking water which is a challenge for me!

whatisontk · 29/05/2024 19:38

Ok I put my big girl pants on and took my first jab, wish me luck.
