No engagement ring just wedding ring

We have decided to get married after 20 years together. Thinking of just getting a wedding ring and not bothering with engagement ring. Anyone else done this? Not sure if it will look too plain.

My mum. She doesn’t like jewellery. I only wear my engagement ring, which is like a very modest eternity ring with small diamonds all round. It’s comfortable. You could always get an ‘engagement’ or eternity ring later on if you decided you’d like one after all.

sallymonella · 02/03/2026 22:19

Me. There's no way I wanted two rings on one finger and I liked the simplicity of just the wedding band.

Missymarple · 02/03/2026 22:23

Yup, me. DH and I were never engaged, we just had a conversation about getting married and went and did it 6 months later. I don't wear any jewellery other than my wedding ring so the simplicity of the band works for me.

Me!

HolidayHattie · 02/03/2026 22:27

If you're happy with it, that's all that matters. As a PP said, if you change your mind later you can always get an eternity ring.

NormasArse · 02/03/2026 22:28

I have an engagement ring which was a complete waste of money. I only ever wear my wedding band.

NerdyBird · 02/03/2026 22:29

you can get bands with stones set in so that they are pretty flat to the surface if you want a little sparkle or colour.

Uvorange · 02/03/2026 22:29

Me, always found the idea of an engagement ring a bit misogynistic, though no judgement to anyone else ofc.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 02/03/2026 22:30

Loads of people just wear one, even if they have an engagement ring. My mum never wears hers, I’m not sure I’ve ever even seen it, it’s in the attic - she’s just not a jewellery person. I have friends who wear theirs intermittently - they take it off for exercise or gardening or cooking etc and it might stay off for a day or so.

So in terms of how it will look, I think if you’re worried about others’ opinions it won’t really be noticed that much.

Shinyandnew1 · 02/03/2026 22:32

Loads of people don’t wear a ring at all. Who cares if someone else thinks it looks plain. Choose what you like the look of!

treacle99 · 02/03/2026 22:49

Thanks everyone. I had never given it a second though before as we never intended to get married. I know it doesnt really matter what anyone else thinks - think it's more because im not very fashionable and so I dont always trust my own judgement about what looks good (I have a habit of buying something and then realising my choice was awful months down the line).

I have a plain gold wedding ring, no engagement ring. I am very intentional about all of my jewellery, and although I am
not Jewish, I read once that in Jewish thought, a wedding ring should be plain and simple to mirror the way you want your marriage to be - it’s not about the money, it’s not appearances, it’s about a true, unbroken love, free of complications and pretence.

When I read that, I thought it was beautiful. I also hate when jewellery gets caught on things, which I don’t have to worry about this way either!

Fivelegged · 02/03/2026 23:11

I’m married and have never had an engagement or wedding ring. Do exactly what you like.

Gowlett · 02/03/2026 23:11

Just a gold wedding band. We didn’t get engaged as such. Decided to get married, after discussing it. Then we organised it.

FlapperFlamingo · 02/03/2026 23:59

We got married after 25+ years. I dontbhave an engagement ring, nor do I have a wedding ring. Neither are needed, depending on personal preference.

Arglefraster · 03/03/2026 01:05

I wear a plain gold band just like my husband does. No engagement ring or any other jewellery.

ThankFuckTheSunIsHere · 03/03/2026 01:12

Wear whatever you like op. There’s no rules. Congratulations on getting married 🎉

if you'd like a bit of sparkle @treacle99 what about an eternity ring with your wedding band?

along these lines

mondaytosunday · 03/03/2026 02:12

I do have an engagement ring but it looks exactly like my wedding ring with a few diamond chips embedded in. Together they look like one ring. In fact it’s so plain my mother declared it wasn’t a ‘proper engagement ring’ at all.

UraniumFlowerpot · 03/03/2026 02:23

I have just an engagement ring and used it for my wedding ring also. less bulky than having both and prettier than just the wedding band. In style it’s sort of between the two, very fancy for a wedding ring but quite simple and small for an engagement ring.

Relaxd · 03/03/2026 03:34

Plain bands here. Money was no issue, just didn’t like engagement ring look with the wedding band when tried a few. Do have an eternity ring which I wear on occasion.

Lostsadandconfused · 03/03/2026 03:54

Yes, although it doesn’t have to be a plain band.

I was never formally engaged, so I had an Edwardian 5 stone 1 ctw diamond ring as my wedding band.

thornbury · 03/03/2026 04:07

Been married 10 years, never had an engagement ring. I proposed 29/2, we married 2/6. Wasn't really worth it!

ApeachAndaGoodBook · 03/03/2026 06:16

We have matching plain gold bands.

WhatNextImScared · 03/03/2026 06:20

Quite a few of my friends do this. I think it looks elegant
