No engagement ring just wedding ring

We have decided to get married after 20 years together. Thinking of just getting a wedding ring and not bothering with engagement ring. Anyone else done this? Not sure if it will look too plain.

I’ve only got a wedding ring, it has some stones set into it but I actually haven’t worn it for years, I don’t like jewellery much.

I did. Also after long relationship.

I dont wear either, no one has ever commented. I hated my engagement ring, it was not me at all. When we went to get it resized the assistant did a stupid little gasp when she opened it, clearly a rehearsed thing and it made me loathe the thing. I sold it for the gold years ago. I really wish dh didn’t buy stuff and then get offended afterwards if I hate it. He didn’t check what I liked for the ring.

Me too! DH and I skipped being engaged and jumped straight into getting married. I have a beautiful plain band which I’m very happy with.

We have matching plain gold bands.

This is what DH and I have, with our initials and wedding date engraved on the inside. I do have an engagement ring that was my grandmother's, a thin gold band with a solitaire diamond, and I do wear it sometimes, but often don't.

FourForksSake · 03/03/2026 16:45

I have a diamond set into my wedding band. No engagement ring.

CanISeeYourLicence · 03/03/2026 16:52

I think a simple wedding band is incredibly elegant.

boxofbuttons · 03/03/2026 17:30

We didn't buy an engagement ring - his nana left us a ring, so I wore that as an 'engagement ring' for a bit (we just decided to get married so there was no proposal), but I've not worn it in years and only wear my wedding ring!

I have engagement earrings in my second hole and a wedding ring.

If you're happy with it, that's all that matters. As a PP said, if you change your mind later you can always get an eternity ring.

Why not go for an eternity style if you want to be different?

Rituelec · 03/03/2026 19:15

I only wear plan thin wedding band

soddingspiderseason · 03/03/2026 19:16

Yes, I had a simple platinum band with one diamond in the band, not set higher. Was lovely.

Jrisix · 03/03/2026 19:22

Just a wedding band here. It is hammered gold but no stones. I figured I can switch it to something different later if I go off it. I also have a plain silver band that I wear instead sometimes and some silicone ones for the gym.

Unfortunate turn of phrase!

I did this. A white gold band with tiny diamonds set into little notches all around it. I love it.

Great! And one more plus about not having protruding stones is there is less likelihood of damage catching on things etc

BestBefore2000 · 03/03/2026 20:06

Absolutely up to you - don't let what anybody else does / the majority do sway you!!
For example, I'm in the firm minority being a married Ms MyName and I absolutely couldn't care less what others think/do!

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 03/03/2026 20:09

Many couples do that where I’m at (Switzerland). Engagement rings were apparently so thoroughly out of fashion in the 80ies and 90ies that my DM was rather shocked when she realised that I - and many of my friends - were wearing engagement rings again!

Yes, that's a brilliant bonus. I didn't think of any of this out at all. Just loved the ring as soon as DH pointed it out in the shop. It was the first one we looked at. He has the same style but thicker, minus the diamonds.

Really? I don't know anyone who changed their name after marriage except my mum. I would have thought those who still do are in the minority!
