No engagement ring just wedding ring

We have decided to get married after 20 years together. Thinking of just getting a wedding ring and not bothering with engagement ring. Anyone else done this? Not sure if it will look too plain.

I have 3 rings. Been married 25 years. Only ever wear them if we are out, special occasion. None are worn day to day. I think the last time I wore them was Christmas Day.

Lengokengo · 03/03/2026 06:24

My dad bought my mum an engagement ring that she clearly didn’t like ( but has never said). It’s a cheap stone. Ever since I can remember, if it comes up in conversation my mum will say ‘ the stones loose’. I have never seen it and they have been married over 60 years!

She has only ever worn her wedding band.

My MIL, on the other hand ‘lost’ her wedding ring while gardening, so only ever wears her engagement ring!

Do what you like!

notacooldad · 03/03/2026 06:25

I had no engagement or wedding ring.
Ive been married 30 years nearly.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 03/03/2026 09:40

Wear what you want @treacle99 . I would recommend a court/comfort band. They are rounded on the inside & very comfortable.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 03/03/2026 09:42

I just have a wedding ring - it’s platinum and has a slight dip/twist in so it’s marginally more interesting than a wedding band. There was no proposal so no engagement ring, and literally no one has ever noticed or noticed enough to comment.

I only had a wedding ring as I never wore rings anyway. I’ve actually misplaced it (sure it’s in the house somewhere) so feel like I’m definitely happy with my choice as I wouldn’t want another thing to look after.

simpledeer · 03/03/2026 09:46

Yeah, I have short thin fingers and much prefer to just have a wedding band.

Rozendantz · 03/03/2026 09:47

Another one with just a wedding ring here. We never got engaged, just eloped!

Pipersouth · 03/03/2026 09:47

Whatever you want to wear is perfect. I decided against an engagement ring as I don’t wear much jewellery and I have diamond cut that glitters as much but no worries about stones being knocked off.

InfoSecInTheCity · 03/03/2026 09:49

I had a ring we used on the wedding day because we needed something but never an engagement ring and don’t wear a wedding ring now, I hate having anything on my hands.

you can get bands with stones set in so that they are pretty flat to the surface if you want a little sparkle or colour.

This is what I have!

Mum2Fergus · 03/03/2026 09:52

I don’t even have a wedding ring lol we did matching tattoos.

Thanks everyone. I had never given it a second though before as we never intended to get married. I know it doesnt really matter what anyone else thinks - think it's more because im not very fashionable and so I dont always trust my own judgement about what looks good (I have a habit of buying something and then realising my choice was awful months down the line).

Well I honestly don't think you can go wrong with a plain wedding band!

I have a plain gold wedding band and no engagement ring. My fancier rings tend to stick out and bump against things, or get a bit of soap trapped under them and trigger my eczema, so I only wear them occasionally. I have a simple band (with a small stone in a rubover setting) on my right hand as well, and those 2 are the only rings I wear on a daily basis.

I have short podgy fingers, and also tend to be a bit clumsy. So that probably affected my decision as well!

Lots of engagement ring styles are a bit impractical for daily wear (although obviously there are exceptions), so it can be a lot of money to spend on something you don't wear very much.

oldwhyno · 03/03/2026 10:09

If you're not getting engaged, why would you get an engagement ring?

moonstarsuns · 03/03/2026 10:13

@treacle99ive done this. I didn’t have a proposal we just discussed getting married and then arranged it and we’re married a few months later. Cos of this I chose a beautiful wedding ring with sapphire blue gems surrounded my diamonds and I love it. It’s supposedly designed to be worn as an eternity ring but I love it so much I chose it, after all it’s the only thing on my wedding finger.

so u don’t have to choose a plain wedding ring is what I’m saying

Scottishskifun · 03/03/2026 10:13

I do have an engagement ring but I only wear my wedding ring now. Definitely not strange 🙂

Musicaltheatremum · 03/03/2026 10:16

Me...we went shopping for engagement ring and found to lovely wedding rings with the Cuillin hills on (from Skye) didn't bother with engagement rings after that.

DonttouchthatLarry · 03/03/2026 10:18

We’d been together 14 years, decided one April to get married in August - and kept it secret so didn’t want an engagement ring. We have animals and are outdoorsy so I also didn’t want anything with stones sticking out to catch or scratch, so I got a rubover setting wedding ring with some small sapphires and diamonds.

I don’t wear an engagement ring, nor does my mother or grandmother. Not an issue, one ring is enough

Mosaic80 · 03/03/2026 10:23

I didn't have an engagement ring, just a wedding ring. My fingers are pretty small and I don't (on me) like the look of 2 rings especially. I went for a diamond floral wedding band, similar to this (but it wasn't as expensive as that one!). Divorced now but I loved that ring (I chucked it into a river in the end as a symbolic thing!).

Floral Diamond Band

A slim and delicately designed floral band, perfect to wear alone or match gently against an engagement ring. Brilliant round diamonds shine along this leafy 4mm band. Featuring a total diamond weight of 0.20ct. Diamonds are fully set around the band.

We got married after a very long time together and I did not want an engagement ring either.
I chose a very nice eternity ring, with diamonds embedded, so more like a sparkly wedding band, and love it.

reluctantlogin · 03/03/2026 10:27

A friend of mine with a forty year successful marriage has a lovely Cartier ring that I’ve airways admired - channel set diamonds in platinum / something line this : www.harrods.com/en-gb/p/cartier-platinum-and-diamond-1985-wedding-ring-000000000007157352?srsltid=AfmBOopCQxNC5VgW5jQeMzbipCG1Ssxy70rPy4nReO6juFbpCi8A-1Fg

CompanyOfThieves · 03/03/2026 10:28

I have only a wedding ring. I think it makes it look more special, simple and beautiful.

I have also never taken it off.

TillyTt · 03/03/2026 10:31

I don’t like wearing rings so don’t even wear my wedding ring.
I was never engaged. I think that’s a bit Jane Austen. Do people still get engaged?
