No engagement ring just wedding ring

We have decided to get married after 20 years together. Thinking of just getting a wedding ring and not bothering with engagement ring. Anyone else done this? Not sure if it will look too plain.

Really? I don't know anyone who changed their name after marriage except my mum. I would have thought those who still do are in the minority!

I only encounter this on here. It’s like crinolines and not having the vote for me, but involving self- delusions about their birth name being ‘difficult’ and their husband’s as ‘easy’ and ‘lovely’ or ‘wanting to have the same name as my children’ (when there’s a very easy way to do that). I can only conclude that some women feel a man is doing them a favour by marrying them, and must be placated.

I just have a wedding ring. Once he proposed, we just got on with organising the wedding for 5 months later. I never really understood the whole engagement thing, and besides, I have quite short, stubby fingers.

Everyone I know changed their name after marriage.

@Allseeingallknowing @Jrisix
Most women still do in the UK (unfortunately in my opinion). I only know of one of married Ms MyName apart from myself.

"Approximately 80% to 90% of women in the UK adopt their husband's surname upon marriage, according to studies and surveys, remaining a deeply entrenched tradition despite declining rates among younger generations. While some reports suggest the figure may be slightly lower for younger women, it remains the dominant practice in heterosexual marriages.
Prevalence: Surveys have frequently placed the figure around 90%, with a 2016 study indicating roughly 90% of women in Britain take their husband's name, including about 85% of those aged 18-30.
Recent Data: Some sources suggest that around 80% of women in opposite-sex marriages continue to change their names, with trends indicating a slight decline, but a solid majority still following the custom.
Trends: Although the majority still change their name, it is becoming increasingly common to keep maiden names, create double-barrelled names, or for partners to merge names.
Although not a legal requirement, the custom is often seen as a way to create a sense of family unity, though it has roots in patriarchal history."

We decided to get married too. I bought an engagement ring but always felt like a bit of a fraud wearing it as he didn’t actually propose 🤣 so I just wear the band. I wish I’d got a ‘jazzier’ band now

Engagement rings aren't a thing where I live. A lot of people (women and men) have pretty wedding rings instead with stones, unusual shapes, colours and textures. They're actually so much easier to wear

Thanks! Im definitely going to stick with the wedding only band. Shopping trip on friday 🤗 .

I've never had an engagement ring - just my plain wedding ring for 48 years, which is beautiful.

Good call. Loads of people do this, no-one will give it a second thought regardless of whether you choose a plain band or a sparkly eternity ring style band or something in between. And if you ever change your mind in the future there’s nothing stopping you getting another ring as an anniversary present.
