Does anyone have yellow gold rings any more?

I have strayed over here out of nosiness/I hope you don't mind!

I got married in 1999 and it seems looking back that about 2000/2003 there was a bit of a cut off between wearing yellow gold engagement and wedding rings and the move towards white gold/platinum.

I have yellow gold and 18 years on, it's starting to look really old fashioned! I was contemplating have my diamond reset in platinum but DH reckons that silver gold has been in fashion for so long now (the jeweller I spoke to about doing it said that 95% of the rings he sells now are white metal) that it'll probably get popular again Grin!

Do you have white or yellow gold? What about your friends/family?

My engagement ring is platinum and my wedding band is yellow gold. I have a yellow diamond in my engagement ring, which links them together. Love the look of them, and hopefully the best of both worlds.

I bought you should never mix metals with rings?
Because platinum is so much harder than gold, if you wear the rings next to each other, the platinum will wear away at the gold?

applesauce1 · 21/01/2017 12:45

We got married in October this year and both have yellow gold bands. My engagement ring is a diamond set on a slim gold band. The rest of my jewellery is gold and gold is the colour I've always worn! I don't know anyone else my age who wears gold, though. When we were looking for the engagement ring, there were absolutely no sample rings in yellow gold to look at, which is a shame. I don't think they look old fashioned; can gold ever go out of fashion?

Yellow gold, married in 2013. I am allergic to everything else. DH has platinum.

Lindorballs · 21/01/2017 12:53

I've got rose gold wedding and engagement ring. Got engaged 4.5 years ago. I think I got in just before it got really fashionable (maybe I'm flattering myself about how ahead of the curve I was!). I love it but it will date I think. Mine is very unusual though so I'm hoping that will give it longevity. Also 18k so at the yellowy end of the rose gold spectrum. I love yellow gold also and think it's more classic. I won't post a picture of mine. It will definitely out me!

Only people over 40.
Just dosnt seem as popular with the younger couples these days.
Personally I think if you don't have yellow or rose gold you may just as well have silver as that is what white gold and platinum rings look like anyway.

Got married in 1994, we have white gold wedding rings. I have never been a particular fan of yellow gold coloured jewellery, so I really wanted white gold. Had to go to several jewellers - it really wasn't very popular 23 years (yikes!) ago.

The rings have never needed any upkeep.

nextchapterplease · 21/01/2017 13:00

Yellow gold here - engaged 2005.
Not once regretted it - just had a yellow gold eternity ring made to match for 10th anniversary.
I had always tended towards it for other jewellery but can remember briefly thinking platinum was the done thing - but fortunately jeweller reassured me to go with my preference and that it does just suit some people more - I think it's the warmth thing as a few others have said.
Love these threads !

Sorry, can't share a photo as they're very identifying! I've worn them together for longer than 10 years though, and they're both fine, no ill effects.

WanderingNotLost · 21/01/2017 22:32

All my jewellery is white gold or silver except my engagement ring which is platinum Grin), I have very fair skin so gold jewellery doesn't suit me.

TipBoov · 21/01/2017 22:46

I got married in 2011 and have a yellow gold wedding ring, just a plain band. Engagement ring is a single diamond on a yellow band.

Here's a picture of my 3 rings.

Yellow for me, married in 1999
Most gold for jewellery will be a mix of metals (alloy) and the percentages decide the colour of the gold.
So rose gold has a higher percent of copper in it
White gold will have a hint of yellow (from the actual gold) and normally needs to be rhodium plated

It is a common misconception that the color of the rhodium plating, which is seen on many commercial pieces, is actually the color of white gold. The term "white" covers a large spectrum of colors that borders or overlaps pale yellow, tinted brown, and even very pale rose. The jewelry industry often conceals these off-white colors by rhodium plating.

Got engaged in 2009 and married in 2011. Engagement and wedding rings are in white gold. Not as a fashion statement but because i don't like yellow gold

pinkish · 05/02/2017 17:43

My wedding band is a thin rose gold band worn by my grandmother. I love it so much because it makes me think of her and my grandfather as well as DH,

n0ne · 05/02/2017 17:43

I've never liked/worn yellow gold and I'm nearly 40. Nor do most of my friends. It's a shame, actually, as my mum has lots of yellow gold jewellery that she'd love to pass on to me and DSis, but neither of us would wear it.

honeyroar · 14/02/2017 20:50

Yellow gold for me (I got married 2008). I like the traditional look and warm tones. White gold looks like stainless steel to me.

At the end of the day you should have what you like, nothing else matters really!

SparklesandBangs · 14/02/2017 21:09

I only wear yellow gold as it suits my skin tone, my wedding and engagement rings date from the 1990's but I don't wear them, I know have a gold and diamond band that suits my lifestyle better (I can't wear sticky out rings).
I commissioned a ring last year I could have had any material but chose 18ct Yellow gold. I did think about platinum but it just didn't look right

BaggyCheeks · 16/02/2017 09:36

I normally wear silver jewellery, but my engagement ring is yellow gold with an oval sapphire and diamonds, and our wedding bands are plain gold. We both prefer how it looks, and think it has a more timeless look than white gold. I also didn't want the hassle of the rings starting to look a bit crap before they have to get rhodium plated.

BaggyCheeks · 16/02/2017 09:38

Will add that I got my ring last year aged 26, just to put myself out there as an example of a young person choosing yellow gold Grin
