Does anyone have yellow gold rings any more?

I have strayed over here out of nosiness/I hope you don't mind!

I got married in 1999 and it seems looking back that about 2000/2003 there was a bit of a cut off between wearing yellow gold engagement and wedding rings and the move towards white gold/platinum.

I have yellow gold and 18 years on, it's starting to look really old fashioned! I was contemplating have my diamond reset in platinum but DH reckons that silver gold has been in fashion for so long now (the jeweller I spoke to about doing it said that 95% of the rings he sells now are white metal) that it'll probably get popular again Grin!

Do you have white or yellow gold? What about your friends/family?

it's just yellow gold that's been dipped in rhodium

Not quite. It starts out much paler because of what the gold is mixed with.

I got engaged in 2004, married in 2005 and have yellow gold. White gold/platinum just doesn't suit my skin tone and looks very cold and dull on me. I do have other white gold jewellery, but it has to suit the style and I still prefer yellow gold.

I got married in 2015 and have a yellow gold wedding band. I felt it was more traditional. My engagement ring has a yellow gold band with platinum shoulders coming up to the stone. It's vintage so doesn't look much like modern rings.

My engagement, wedding and eternity rings are all yellow gold - we had matching wedding bands made for us in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. DH lost my wedding band (moved it as a joke and could remember where he put it) and had a replacement made also in yellow gold. His eternity ring is titanium.

ringlingsisters · 20/01/2017 09:20

Married 1997, yellow gold but the rings was my grandmother's from her wedding in 1927 and I'm not even sure it was new then. It's heavy and about 5mm wide and I love it.

Engagement ring is garnet/diamond chip dress ring on gold band, also 2nd hand. This is my second engagement ring - first was beautiful pearl and garnet Edwardian dress ring on gold band with greek key pattern engraved, but pearls really don't go with my job (for practical, hands often in water and detergent reasons rather than 'oh my dear pearls are so de trop reasons!) so DH bought me another one......... Silver/platinum makes my skin look sallow.

I know Maze. It might be called white gold but it's a bastardised version of gold. Gold is yellow.

TeethDrama · 20/01/2017 09:24

I love yellow gold and white gold (or platinum) together on a piece of jewellery. Nicely done with an artistic touch it can look amazing.

Maybe you could look into having your yellow gold melted down into a new design with some platinum, so you get to keep the actual ring or gold but with a newer look. Yellow gold and platinum lends itself to both traditional and modern designs very well, especially with a diamond to set it off.

All of my friends have white gold, it shows the diamonds up better, apparently. I have yellow gold as it suits my complexion better.

MackerelOfFact · 20/01/2017 09:26

Like Nightmanagerfan I know lots of people in their 20s and 30s with vintage-style ornate yellow gold engagement rings. London also.

I have a friend with a lovely rose gold one. It's beautiful but I think it will date awfully.

TalkingofMichaelAngel0 · 20/01/2017 09:29

My mum is in her 70s and has a white gold wedding ring. She said yellow
Gold just didnt look right against her skin tone. I
Dont remember seeing any other white gold growing up and always thought it to be a bir quirky so always said id have the same. Then it got very fashionable and no longer at all kwirky lol but i got married in 2008 and still went for that colour, although platinum.

FrankAndBeans · 20/01/2017 09:33

I have a vintage gold ring. It's pretty!

Casmama · 20/01/2017 09:34

Yellow gold for engagement wedding and eternity rings. I actually suit silver better so did get them rhodium dipped for a while but it has faded back to yellow for the moment.
I think actually the diamonds stand out better with yellow gold because there is more of a contrast.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2017 09:34

It might be called white gold but it's a bastardised version of gold. Gold is yellow.

As I understand it, 18ct white gold is no more bastardised than 18ct yellow gold or 18ct rose gold.

girlandboy · 20/01/2017 09:36

I married in 1993 and have a yellow gold wedding ring, and a yellow gold eternity ring.
DH buys me a ring virtually every year and I always choose a yellow gold one. White gold and platinum always looks cheap to me because frankly I think they look like silver which IS cheaper. You might as well buy silver than go to the expense of platinum.

I have yellow gold and I like my gold to be .... yellow Grin

Cosmicglitterpug · 20/01/2017 09:41

Yellow gold here. Got married four years ago. I find the look of platinum harsh personally.

FourToTheFloor · 20/01/2017 09:49

Not saying it isn't Soup but gold is yellow. Calling it white gold is a gimmick.

rollonthesummer · 20/01/2017 10:05

Thank you for all of the replies. It's really interesting to hear what other people have and why. All of the girls at work who have got married recently have halo rings which are so pretty- but I wonder if they will date?!

The jeweller said he could reset the my engagement diamond in a platinum band for about £350-DH isn't terribly keen but I am contemplating it!!

I have yellow gold and diamond both for my engagement ring and my wedding ring.

We got married in 2008 when white gold /platinum were all the rage, but I have always preferred yellow gold and it suits my skin tone better.

MazDazzle · 20/01/2017 10:50

If you do that OP, keep your yellow gold empty ring shank. You could always get the stone put back at a later date.

When I got mine reset in platinum the jeweller offered to buy my empty gold rings and I said yes without much thought. Regret it now.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2017 12:02

Calling it white gold is a gimmick.

No, it's just a description [confusion]

IamaLadyeee · 20/01/2017 12:17

I got married in 1989 with a 9ct yellow gold ring, didnt have an engagement ring. This ring no longer fits me.

I now have a 3mm plain tungsten carbide ring, it looks just like platinum and is very hard wearing and will never lose its shine and cost just £25! skinflintGrin

here it is, excuse the old dried up hands!

Does anyone have yellow gold rings any more?
BigSandyBalls2015 · 20/01/2017 12:21

I got married in 1996 and have a platinum wedding ring. Not sure why really.
