Does anyone have yellow gold rings any more?

I have strayed over here out of nosiness/I hope you don't mind!

I got married in 1999 and it seems looking back that about 2000/2003 there was a bit of a cut off between wearing yellow gold engagement and wedding rings and the move towards white gold/platinum.

I have yellow gold and 18 years on, it's starting to look really old fashioned! I was contemplating have my diamond reset in platinum but DH reckons that silver gold has been in fashion for so long now (the jeweller I spoke to about doing it said that 95% of the rings he sells now are white metal) that it'll probably get popular again Grin!

Do you have white or yellow gold? What about your friends/family?

Bizarre that people say rose gold and halo rings will look dated. I have my grandmother's rose gold watch and my mother's 'halo' engagement ring i.e. the central stone is surrounded by tiny diamonds. One is nearly 100 years old and the other at least 60. If you keep something long enough it goes past being dated to being a precious antique!
My own wedding ring is beaten yellow gold, engagement ring is yellow gold and platinum.

I suppose anything that there is a big influx of at one time, will look dated or 'of an age'. 80s lurid leg warmers for example! Yes there were halo rings or rose gold around in the past but not loads and loads all at the same time. I looked on a wedding forum out of nosiness last night and nearly every other ring was halo or rose gold. It will be 'of its time'.

I got engaged a fortnight ago (after 9 years, eeeek!) and DP chose a beautiful white gold diamond ring that really suits me, I would have had either but I think now I've got this colour we'll be sticking to it for our wedding rings. Even if it goes out of fashion in years to come as PP's have said its really what it means that's the most important I think, I think you're right about the trend though we are mid 20's and I don't know anybody that's got a yellow gold one recently.

KatherinaMinola · 20/01/2017 15:41

Oddly, I was thinking a year or so ago that white gold (like mine) is beginning to look dated - in a few years' time all the middle aged women will be wearing white gold rings.

I think yellow is more classic - I really like a traditional yellow gold solitaire engagement ring. I like rose gold too.

But what suits you is important - most people strongly suit either silver or gold.

Meffy · 20/01/2017 15:47

We have white gold wedding rings and we're married in 2007.

But ... we've never had them re-dipped because we both like the progression and how the metal has changed!

My engagement ring in white gold but not as tarnished as I took it off when I had the kids. This year for my 40th I got an eternity ring... white gold, diamond and sapphire !

EatsShitAndLeaves · 20/01/2017 15:51

I have yellow gold rings - in fact all my jewellery is yellow gold.

Silver/white/gold/platinum just doesn't really suit my skin tone - it's too "cold".

I don't dislike silver coloured jewellery - it just doesn't look great on me.

Personally I'd ignore "fashion" and go with what works best for you. Platinum/white gold has been in fashion for a while, but rose gold seems to be the "new" trend. Give it 5 years and yellow gold will be back in vogue.

Donostia · 20/01/2017 15:52

Yellow gold here, my wedding ring is my great grandmothers so I'd never change it, it's so so special. I'm 29, none of my friends have yellow gold though. DH got to choose and also chose yellow. I prefer it anyway as I think it's better on my pale Olive skin tone. DH is ginger and looks better in warmer tones too.

bonbonours · 20/01/2017 15:55

I have platinum (got married 15years ago) just because I never wore other gold jewellery at the time it would have been weird. I don't think zi would ever change it though, even if it looked unfashionable now.

If I was choosing now I might have 3colour gold or rose gold. Although platinum supposed to be stronger and last longer (hopefully like my marriage) 😃

I love yellow gold and my fiance knew this, but had a difficult time finding yellow gold engagement rings, eventually he found a nice reasonable one in an antiques shop.

I much prefer the look to white gold tbh.

Thank you for all of the replies-it's really interesting to read what people think :)

What is Asian 22 carat gold known as then? It's definitely 'yellower'

2ducks2ducklings · 21/01/2017 11:23

Mine is 22ct gold, it belonged to my great nan, so I love it for that reason. It holds double the amount of sentimental value to me. Having said that, if I didn't have this ring, I would probably have gone for a white gold (or silver, if that's even possible)I prefer silver jewellery, so white gold would match my other jewellery.

HeyRoly · 21/01/2017 11:36

My engagement and wedding rings are platinum (married 2010) but I didn't choose platinum for fashion, I just prefer silver coloured jewellery and cool tones. It suits me better.

Why so worried about fashion and things looking "dated"? I'm sure my mum's 70s engagement ring looks dated. If anything, it's a badge of honour for the longevity of my parents' marriage!

Pestilence13610 · 21/01/2017 11:38

18ct white gold does exist (unplated) it is just not the colour people expect. My first wedding ring was one of these. My second is titanium because it is more rugged and I am a ring destroyer.

Ilovewillow · 21/01/2017 11:38

All of mine are platinum, married 11 yrs but I also wear my mums eternity ring which is 45 yrs old and that's yellow gold and it's beautiful!

Glastokitty · 21/01/2017 11:41

Yellow gold here, married twenty years. White gold, platinum and silver look horrible on me as I have very yellow toned skin. And now I live in Oz and I'm no longer deathly pale, I find yellow gold looks better with a bit of a tan too.

kel12345 · 21/01/2017 11:41

I only wear 9 Carat yellow gold jewellery. I prefer it and I think it suits me best. My husband only wears white gold though.
My engagement, wedding and eternity rings are yellow gold, his wedding ring is white gold.

wobblywonderwoman · 21/01/2017 11:45

Mine is the exact same as nicecuppa ring above. It is a tiffany style.

I have a plain gold band. Married five years. I just wanted a classic ring. My eternity is a mix of white gold and yellow gold.

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 21/01/2017 11:55

I didn't know really what white and rose gold were til this thread.

So

Rose gold is pink
White gold is silver
Yellow gold is gold!

I guess I like my gold to look yellow gold, otherwise it just doesn't look like gold!

FizzBombBathTime · 21/01/2017 12:00

Mine are both yellow gold

Husbands is rose gold (didn't realise it would become fashionable!!)

GlowWine · 21/01/2017 12:02

Plain yellow gold band here, no stone, no engagement ring. Married 12 years ago. It's the only piece of yellow gold I own/wear , I'm more of a silver/platinum kind of girl Smile.
I guess I see it more of a symbol, than an ornament. When my fingers were too thin due to drastic weight loss I wore it on my middle finger with a wider silver band to stop it from falling off. Probably not very fashionable Grin
My parents got married in 1963 and have rose gold bands. They were patterned but are plain now.

oleoleoleole · 21/01/2017 12:05

22ct 100 year old plain yellow gold wedding band and 18ct yellow gold 2 year old engagement ring!

Second marriage for both, we both had second hand wedding rings and my first engagement ring was second hand (diamond solitaire). I lost it sadly and we replaced it with the asscher cut solitaire which we had made.

I've always worn yellow gold (married twice yellow gold both times) but I think if you like white gold/silver/platinum go for it. We looked at platinum but it wasn't for me and the upkeep of white gold (needing rhodium plating) put me off. My DS has just got engaged and his fiancée chose white gold and I think it's very popular at the moment but unless it's an investment I think it should be what you like not what's in fashion.

Does anyone have yellow gold rings any more?
Pleasemrstweedie · 21/01/2017 12:06

We got married in 2004. I have a 4mm 22ct yellow gold wedding ring and an 18ct yellow gold engagement ring. Like a PP I am still waiting for the eternity ring.

If I'd known my wedding ring was going to look so good, I would have gone to 5 or even 6mm.

Doje · 21/01/2017 12:13

Been married 4 years and have yellow gold. I wanted my Nan's engagement ring, which is yellow gold and obviously have a wedding ring to match. It also suits mine and my DH's colouring better. I can't imagine him in a white gold one. Or me!

PutDownThatLaptop · 21/01/2017 12:17

18 carat yellow gold plain wedding ring from 2007, with 2006 18 carat yellow gold diamond solitaire (I like the way that yellow gold sets off the look of a diamond) and a 2009 18 carat yellow gold channel set diamond eternity ring.
