Keeling an eye on tesday night into Wednesday

Hi all,
sorry, bit late today - digging out the school!

Met office are clearly pretty concerned about tomorrow night for the SW, and parts of Wales tomorrow night and have a severe weather advisory out

A front is due to cross over the areas concerned. exact extent of snowfall is not known yet and areas around the 'orange' warning areas should also take heed.

it is quite probably I think that the front will bring rain at first, turning to snow, which may be heavy and prolonged. Unfortunately it seems to me to be another of those 'marginal conditions for snow' type event.

if it comes off as the met office are warning it may, there will be significant disruption to travel and quite probably power supply. I would treat it as a 'prepare for the worst but hope for the best' situation.

I should also mention that the front will probably stall as it crosses and give prolonged snow (if thats what ends up happening) over into wednsesday.

I'm in North Devon, Kitten. Some schools went back today, but the ice is still hardpacked on the pavements. What's likely to happen with this new snow do you think? Is it going to stay cold enough to freeze on top of the old stuff - or is it going to be warm enough to melt it? I can't get my head round the forecast at all.

WilfSell · 11/01/2010 13:55

Kitten we (N Staffs/Cheshire/Shrops border) have had more snow overnight and it has been falling lightly but consistently all morning. But I think it is very localised (next village not nearly so bad etc)

The MetOffice Invent thingummy is predicting zero or below temps for next 24-48 hours, plus bands of precipitation keeping coming over same period.

Does this sound to you like EVEN MORE snow for us?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 13:56

I am struggling too I'm afraid. I think that because it is expected to be heavy, if it snows it will lay on top of whatever snow/ice/slush is around. I just don't know how long it will last for.

I am bereft. We had a thaw - instead of more predicted snow. It is drizzling and grey and slushy AND I HATE IT!

More snow, please.....!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 14:01

Wilf - possibly, its a tricky situation really. also depends on temps aloft. hang on, will see if I can figure it out....

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 14:07

Wilf - looks literally right on the edge of rain/sleet/snow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 14:30

oh look - just noticed - put keeling rather than keeping in the title. Must be freudian slip cos feel like I'm keeling over with tiredness

Are we going to get anything more exciting than dreary drizzle in Liverpool? I preferred the snow!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 14:40

LeDodgy, I honestly do not know, I think the conditions are pretty marginal for snow for you today at least and it wouldnt surprise me if it doesnt cheer up. Tomorrow night/wednesday? I don't know, you may get some light snow and depending how this front travels, possibly a bit more than that.

and n yorks?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 21:14

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 21:19

some indications from some models that the precip from tomorrow nights trough could affect areas further east than perhaps the warnings suggest.

i have my fingers crossed for Bournemouth

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 22:20

We're done, aren't we? We are bounding towards spring and flip flops, as we speak! Glass always half full in this house!

MaureenMLove · 11/01/2010 22:27

Oh, but hang on! Me and Kbear are spending the weekend with several hundred Brownies in Butlins at Bognor Regis! Should I maybe hang off painting my toenails til I get back?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 22:34

done? its still mid january. Some of the models are showing a return to cold and snowy weather after this (slightly) milder interlude.
i'd hang on to the nailvarnish and epilator for a little while longer

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 22:37

and bbc graphics showed some snow in your area over tuesday night I think they are using the latest output.

RustyBear · 11/01/2010 22:39

What's the Freudian explanation for tesday, then?

Hope DD's not snowed in at Exeter university- she has exams this week!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2010 22:42

oh. didnt spot that! must peer at the screen more closely!

if tomorrows precip turns out to be mostly snow then theres a lot on the cards for the sw and southern Wales. reasonable amount for cs england too.

ah well, must sleeeeeeep now.

g'night.

There is something happening with the weather here in Dorset, the wind is really beginning to build up,very dark but so far no snow.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 12/01/2010 10:53

Very windy and cold here in North Devon. They are saying rain/sleet for this afternoon, but snow during the night.

NoahAndTheWhale · 12/01/2010 10:55

It is grey in Bedfordshire.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 12/01/2010 10:55

Apparently we're getting some light snow in Liverpool tomorrow well some say today too. ATM it is very dark so I reckon it's going to rain.
