I think this is the earliest in the season that we have reached the letter 'I' in the met office naming system. The previous record being Storm Imogen on 8 Feb 2016.
Its certainly been an active season so far.

Amber warnings for wind for some parts, yellow for the rest, with widespread gales possible across the UK. Some fairly worrying flood concerns too where lots of rain will fall during a rapid snow and ice melt onto frozen ground.

We're in the yellow bit of the home counties, and it has gone from blustery to downright windy with some fairly strong gusts here in the last half an hour. It is trying to rain, but just spitting in the wind at the moment.

I've just got back from the petrol station, and had to swerve around a rogue wheelie bin taking itself for a drive up the road.😂

PickAChew · 21/01/2024 17:23

It does seem to have got louder as it's got dark.

I should probably get everything out of the fridge for dinner.

Same 😄 I've put all the phones on charge - ever the optimist.

Got a few weather apps open with different models. One says East coast should start to die down by 10pm. I like that one best. All agree on the 52mph gusts we're getting now though and all predicting another 10 mph on top of that.
Dd has decided to forego the half hour walk to karate training.
I'm crossing fingers for less wind at 5am for my bike ride to work.

Toomuch44 · 21/01/2024 17:40

Arrived home from work around 30mins ago - windy and raining outside, but not horrendous (yet) - Gloucestershire. Have taken the precautions of moving outside table nearer the house, dismantling bird bath and securing a large pot that often goes during bad weather.

It feels really windy here in the south west. The wind is really howling and whipping around the house.

justasking111 · 21/01/2024 18:01

Measured at Capel Curig earlier gust of 94 .

Son decided to stay over tonight.

It's windy in East London but the wind sounds worse up high than it is on the ground (if that makes any sense). Like I can hear it roaring but it feels pretty average. No rain today although it must have rained last night.

LittleRedRidingSnood · 21/01/2024 18:09

@justasking111 Where is that alert from?

AdoraBell · 21/01/2024 18:11

We’re in Somerset, very windy but not severe yet. One DD is in Cardiff and the other in Liverpool. She needs go out to Supermarket🤦‍♀️

Inextremis · 21/01/2024 18:20

Well, here in the west of Ireland, on the Mayo coast, we lost internet an hour or so ago (am on through phone) and now the power's gone out - thankfully after I'd cooked and eaten dinner! Wind absolutely howling, plus rain. The glass in the windows is wobbling - all a bit scary, really! Glad I hadn't put the battery-operated candles away after Christmas :)

East coast of England. Ridiculously windy now. Is the storm.early?

Where abouts on the east coast are you?

@IBegYourBiggestPardon Cleethorpes.

Cumulonimbusincus · 21/01/2024 18:27

It’s suddenly hit here. All of a sudden there was a huge gust of wind and the rain hit the windows like a car wash. I had to go to the gate to get a parcel in and can honestly say I was a bit wary of being hit by flying debris. Very glad I don’t have to go any further tonight.

Doppelgangers · 21/01/2024 18:29

It's horrific here in the midlands this evening the wind is bonkers and we already have a few trees down!

Rowgtfc72 · 21/01/2024 18:32

@OhYouBadBadKitten it's very.weather and the weather forecast on my phone that are saying windspeeds starting to come down from 10.
Can I ask, on another app it asks me which model. I'm on windy.com and it's ecmwf by default. Where does that forecast come from?

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 21/01/2024 18:33

@Rowgtfc72 Brid for me. It's ramping up here as well. Just hope my roof tiles don't fly off again!

lola8345 · 21/01/2024 18:34

West Yorkshire, in an exposed location on the moors!! it's been bad all day but has really ramped up in the last hour.
I've just put a hot water bottle in a bedroom on the north side of the house. My usual bedroom has the electricity cable attached outside and it's banging on the wall. 😢 Bloody terrifying. Everything is charged and torches ready.
Everything is secured or removed from the garden. Global warming sucks.

Fernticket · 21/01/2024 18:35

England/South Wales border. Wind and rain started up about 3.30pm. Started to get worse about half an hour ago. Wind howling round the house now.

Where does which forecast come from? ECMWF? Its a European model. You want to be looking at UKV or arome really at this point. They are high resolution short term forecast models.
