I think this is the earliest in the season that we have reached the letter 'I' in the met office naming system. The previous record being Storm Imogen on 8 Feb 2016.
Its certainly been an active season so far.

Amber warnings for wind for some parts, yellow for the rest, with widespread gales possible across the UK. Some fairly worrying flood concerns too where lots of rain will fall during a rapid snow and ice melt onto frozen ground.

Is the reason for this thread to be informative or to stir up some panic?!
Genuine question.

Because these storms are "normal" aren't they? One day of wind and rain it's barely anything to talk about 🤔 I'm North East Scotland

MeinKraft · 20/01/2024 12:34

Exciting! I love big weather. Hope it doesn't veer off course and end up being a damp squib.

Hi there.

I’m also in NE Scotland. I don’t think these big storms we are getting more often are that ‘normal’ even for our corner of the UK. They are becoming quite brutal and destructive.

MeinKraft · 20/01/2024 12:50

When is Isha due to hit? Tomorrow evening?

FilippityFiloppity · 20/01/2024 12:53

We had an interesting journey home from the in-laws with Gerritt over the holidays - guess who we’re visiting again this weekend!

It's the weather section, what else do you think is talked about here?!
Genuine question...

justasking111 · 20/01/2024 13:31

NE Scotland maybe avoiding the worst this winter. But Ireland, Wales, SW England have been hammered so far this winter. We've had nor westerlies now we've South westerlies. The east coast of the UK have been spared thus far.

HuntingForChicken · 20/01/2024 13:31

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy no, it’s about everybody being prepared (I have moved my bins) and knowing if they need to stay home or are in a safer area.

Damaging storms are normal in the sense that they happen but they are not an everyday event and people do need to be prepared for them - making sure that nothing can be damaged or cause damage avoidably, charge everything that needs charging, make sure they can eat, drink and keep warm if the power goes off, change travel plans if possible and so on.

You'll find no sensationalist posts here to 'stir up some panic'. There has been no insinuation that this storm is abnormal. They are informative posts, highlighting weather which will have significant impacts on some, which can be mitigated by taking sensible actions.

Yes, depending on where you are in the UK. The worst of the winds look to be from mid evening through the night and for some into the first part of Monday morning.

I hope everyone who has a trampoline secures them- one traveled quite merrily down the road near me on its side during a storm last year, and my neighbours ended up with one on top of their shed!

They can be a source of disruption for the train network too.

Getting very windy in west Devon now

Notonthestairs · 20/01/2024 14:13

Thanks OYBBK

MrsMarzetti · 20/01/2024 14:29

To all those with trampolines, bloody well tie them down and drop the netting around the sides.

ChangyMcChangeChange · 20/01/2024 14:30

Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten

Any idea when the winds are going to start up for the mid part of the county upwards? DH driving from London to Durham tomorrow and was planning on starting off from London around 3ish. I’ve seen that the weather warning starts from 6pm - which is when he’s due to still be driving. Should he aim to leave earlier? Unfortunately no option not to travel.

We've all been on these weather threads for years if not decades, never any stirring just useful information and help for people ☺️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2024 15:36

@ChangyMcChangeChange by around 3-4pm ish it'll be gusting to about 50mph quite widely. While not severe, that's quite tiring for long distance motorway driving. It takes a lot of focus keeping the car straight and looking out for high sided vehicles being caught by gusts. I'd go earlier in the day.
