This is an early heads up.

Models have consistently been bringing in a deep low pressure for sometime over Wed/Thurs. As is often the case, details are yet to be nailed down, but some of the models are producing some severe gusts - southern coastal winds of up to 90mph and more widespread inland winds of around 60mph. With storms, comes rain too unfortunately. A wobble in the track could take them further north or, keep it all in France. Exactly when and where the low pressure develops will make a big difference in the outcome. More details to follow.

If the storm is named, it will be Storm Ciaran. At that point I'll ask MNHQ to change the title appropriately.

Wondering whether or not to drive tomorrow. Am in the yellow zone. Have a 1 and quarter hour journey each way, driving north out of the yellow zone. Afternoon return looks nasty with heavy rain and 40mph gusts...

DarklySparkly · 01/11/2023 22:25

Just been watching the footage from Jersey. Heck. And that’s before the peak of the storm. Rooting with all my heart for everyone in the CI.

twobluechickens · 01/11/2023 22:26

The Penzance esplanade cam was a bit blowy when I checked just now. The tide is falling now so not quite as exciting as it was. Hoping the lido survives another bashing.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/11/2023 22:28

Watching thread with interest.

Marcipex · 01/11/2023 22:30

Me too, on Devon/Cornwall border.
We’re awash with rain.

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 01/11/2023 22:30

Starting to get wild here in south Devon.
Local media reporting an unattended car being washed into the sea in sidmouth.

I'm a self employed carer and debating cancelling care calls in the morning. All clients are self reliant enough to manage a morning without care.

Cornwallsfaveflappyj · 01/11/2023 22:31

cornwalllive probably has reporters out there by the sea reporting that people are taking photos near the sea.

Thats right. Our local news outlet is absolutely shit and it's embarrassing

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 01/11/2023 22:32

I'm on the southcoast staying in a seafront hotel for work and the weather is getting pretty bad now.
I'm about 7hrs from home and my daughter has had to go to a&e so my DP is struggling at the hospital with 2 toddlers while I'm stuck here.

Getting a bit worried about getting home tomorrow as it's looking like the trains might not run so god knows what I'll do if I can't get home 😕.

We are meant ti be flying to France tomorrow is it likely to affect this? 🫠

Depends on departure airport, destination airport and roughly when?

FWIW on the French side of the channel extreme north west is red, weather gradually improves as you move south and east.

Checking in to wish everyone luck tonight. I'm in London and need to travel home tomorrow likely after lunchtime so keeping my fingers crossed the trains are running by the time I leave. It looks like I will avoid the brunt of the wind 🤞

verdantverdure · 01/11/2023 22:33

Friends say it's it's in full blow in Cornwall and the guy on the bbc news in Port Solent Hampshire said there is 50-60 mph winds there already.

MyCircumference · 01/11/2023 22:33

I agree it's ridiculous sending reporters to the sea front

Ponderingtosk · 01/11/2023 22:34

I was living in Hastings in 1987, the devastation across the town that night still haunts me, a neighbour lost the side of their house, they’ve just said on the news we haven’t had a storm like this since 1987.

Tomorrow is granddaughters birthday, I’m making a unicorn cake, just wondering if it would be worth staying up tonight and baking it in case there’s no power tomorrow as I’m definitely not going to sleep tonight.

Oh my goodness. You never want to be away from them when they're I'll do you? After lunch it should all calm down. I hope you can get back. I think you will.

I'd bake it tonight, I find it easier to ice if it's been in the fridge overnight anyway.

RagzRebooted · 01/11/2023 22:36

Wind definitely picking up here (halfway between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings). Whichever of my neighbours bought a wind chime this year, is going to be regretting that I think!
Wishing I'd got the gutters cleared this year, we've been renting this place 11 years and it isn't something I thought about until this year. I did contact someone in the summer and he said he'd get back to me, but never did...

DH tyre fixed and work still on, so he's heading up to London now. Hope the roads are nice and empty, he hasn't driven this truck before and isn't looking forward to it!

Swimbikerunmummy · 01/11/2023 21:22

@Sideorderofchips what did you put in your go bag? My DH thinks I’m worrying unnecessarily but am tempted to get something together quietly….

Change of clothes for me and kids. Medication. Important documents

Then a seperate bag cat food and biscuits, water, drinks and snacks.

I've bought something cold (quiche) for tomorrows tea in case we lose power or O have to go and help parents etc.

Half term here in Wales. It’s a week later than England and two weeks (I think) later than Scotland.

I'm in England and it's half term here right now
