Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

Thought I would add my temperature readings . Am just east of York .
I have a cheap amateur weather station , ( thermometer is in full sun though but with an ineffective shade thing , so pinch of salt on actual real temp ) and a greenhouse max/min thermometer .
So at least it can be compared against itself
So yesterday - min temp overnight in greenhouse was 18.1 º , and temp at 12 o clock on weather station was 35.7 º
This morning - min temp overnight was 22.1 º , temp at 12 o clock on weather station was 38.6 º

Ok I've been fine the entire time but now I have a headache and feel awful. Off to drink a lot of water . Cannot imagine how dd and anyone out working in this js feeling, I've just been sitting in front of a fan all day on Microsoft teams meetings. Picking up dd in half an hour thank goodness and she will want to go straight into a cold bath

@Greensleeves

FIrst sign of heat stress get yourselves plenty to drink and cool yourselves off with damp cloths. Of it does not improve in 30 minutes seek medical advice on 111.

Thank you Flowers pint glasses of iced water and damp towels coming up. Still drizzling here - the scent is amazing outside, but some thunder and proper rain would be wonderful!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 12:33

Oh no @WorryMcGee That all sounds very uncomfortable. Sending you cooling thoughts. And many happy Returns. Is there anything you can do to make it all a bit better today?

I just got rather cross with dh who put the grill on in the kitchen. I mean really?! Why would you do that when the temperature is already Boiling Hot. I have done a slo mo flounce.

Not officially.

I think it is still going to feel like a very hot night I'm afraid.

Thanks.

This is just so scary

This is climate change - it's only going to get worse. Climate crisis will eventually one day wipe out human existence!

Motorina · 19/07/2022 12:37

37 in my garden now. Colleagues out driving (NHS home visits, so not for shits and giggles) report minor roads in the area are melting.

No the climate change crisis will not “wipe out human existence”

WorryMcGee · 19/07/2022 12:41

@OhYouBadBadKitten that is 100% flounce-worthy.

I’m currently swaying in my pants, in front of two fans, with my baby in the ergobaby in just her nappy and harness. Thank god she can still go in that (and thank god it’s mesh!) living the absolute dream…

Every year I complain it’s cold and miserable on my birthday and the year I have a tiny baby that has to be put in a hip harness I get ALL the sunshine I never had…argh

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 12:45

Both Kew Gardens nd Heathrow have also surpassed the UK record, so even if Charlwood doesn't verify then the record is still broken.

I have done a slo mo flounce.

Very wise.

I’m half way up a biggish hill and at least getting the prevailing wind through the flat - it’s actually quite strong and gusty. Hot, but the air movement is pleasant.
There’s a thin, high, milky cover of cloud that I associate with greater heat than when the sky is clear blue.

ListenLinda · 19/07/2022 12:49

Just gone to garden to sit in shade for a few mins before bringing washing in. I’ve had to come back inside, the heat is too oppressive.

hope everyone who has to work or go outside today stayes safe

restedbutexhausted · 19/07/2022 12:52

@Greensleeves ooh I love that petrichor smell 😍

Do look after yourselves in this heat Flowers

borntobequiet · 19/07/2022 12:53

@WorryMcGee My birthday is on Friday and I feel your pain! I always felt cheated as a child, having a summer birthday but with awful weather - typically torrential rain - two years out of three, or it felt like it.
Also the beginning of the school holidays so difficult to organise birthday parties with everyone heading off. DS’s birthday is 1st September, so he had a similar problem at the end of the break.

GloriaSmud · 19/07/2022 12:55

My (sheltered) weather station's reading 39.1C here (Leicester) at the moment.

OYBBK I like the sound of your slo mo flounce. I put the oven on last night to make a pie from Sunday's leftover roast dinner and thought, 'Why am I doing this?!'

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 12:57

And there we have it. The first provisional reading of 40C to ever be recorded officially in the UK. London Heathrow.

Met office twitter saying Heathrow has broken the 40 degree barrier. 40.2 at 12:50 (and presumably the potential to go hotter).

velvetvixen · 19/07/2022 12:58

Slo mo flouncing and swaying in pants! stop it! too hot to laugh

poppym12 · 19/07/2022 13:01

Looks like it's going to rain here (SW). It's gone very dark over the Welsh coastline I can see and is a much cooler breeze.

I've just had that pop-up, and to think that at the start of these threads, just a few days ago OYBBK was posting that some models had shown over 40 - but that no-one expected it to happen, though it was significant that the models were getting hotter.

And yet, here we are, 40 is really happening

colouringindoors · 19/07/2022 13:03

Should do a sweepstake on temp and location...

PickAChew · 19/07/2022 13:04

That sounds like hell, @WorryMcGee 😟

If I liked cricket, I wouldn't be fancying it today. I wouldn't fancy the buses out that way, either, though judging by the ones passing us, no one else is, either!

colouringindoors · 19/07/2022 13:05

38.2 in my garden, Chilterns

PickAChew · 19/07/2022 13:08

I had strong words with dh, at the weekend, about not undermining my efforts to keep the house tolerable - we live in a, dormer bungalow so upstairs is a lost cause but downstairs is manageable, so long as he doesn't keep opening the bloody curtains. I think the threats of unpleasantness have persuaded him to take heed.

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 13:08

Now thirty in the flat.

One will not wear shorts. Still in joggers. Spilt milk on a pillow so delayed leaving due to washing that.

Sun not fully round yet. Temperature inside peaks around 6pm.

We should have gone round earlier in theory but one was unhappy there yesterday and I am too hot to chivvy getting ready. And noticing the start of a headache do going to take my own advice!
