Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

Sorry to be totally dim but willing to try anything…. Where do you attach it? Over the front so the air has to blow through it?

Yes, a couple of clothes pegs/small bulldog clips to hold it across the top (like when a muslin is pegged over the front of a pram).

I’ve decanted to the sofa bed downstairs which is definitely cooler!

Met office twitter saying Heathrow has broken the 40 degree barrier. 40.2 at 12:50 (and presumably the potential to go hotter).

Interesting, FWIW the network that distributes aviation weather reports and forecasts are stating the Heathrow observers reported 39 Celsius at 1250 BST..

TiddyTidTwo · 19/07/2022 13:11

32 here in Suffolk. Me and cat and dog inside, in the dark with tower fan. Old solid walled cottage so it's bearable although my motivation is zero, so we are just lazing around.

Why not!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 13:11

It's utterly extraordinary. Genuinely a historic moment and not one to celebrate.

ListenLinda · 19/07/2022 13:13

I can’t believe it has reached 40 degrees and still climbing

TiddyTidTwo · 19/07/2022 13:16

Definitely not celebrating here! You can't enjoy it, can you.

I was watching a video where this chap was saying abroad the sun is great and it's smiles on you, hands you a drink and a bit of a breeze. The UK sun is a different one. It's just angry and throws you sun stroke 😂😂

Exactly. Historic and very alarming.

SquirmOfEels · 19/07/2022 13:20

Thermometer in deepest shade part of garden measured 36, which is also what AccuWeather says is our current temperature (Met Office and apple app both 38)

After 5 mins in the dappled shade it was 38, and then holding it for 2 mins in the sunny bit it was 41.

SW London

Motorina · 19/07/2022 13:24

38 in my garden now. Thermometre in full shade

Totally agree.

Mnet posters, please help me to stop arguing about climate change on FB 🤬 so many people in complete denial, it really upsets me. I know I need to just ignore them but how can they not see what is happening?

restedbutexhausted · 19/07/2022 13:27

39 according to weather app (Sutton Borough) 😮‍💨

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 19/07/2022 13:32

Not a properly set up station obviously, but our garden camera is showing 41C (London) and is in the shade

So this has been a lifesaver. Gel cooling mats for pets (and humans)

We put one under my DD's crib sheet and she slept all night.
Also slept downstairs.

the gel pads re-cool themselves if left unattended for 20 mins.
It's instant relief.
We got 2 - 1 for my DD and one for DH and I to share.
May end up buying a 3rd.

Thank you

Don't argue about climate change today. Observe this day, remember it. Then use that memory in future to drive you forward.

Thank you, that's made me cry a bit but you are right. I will channel you whenever the haterz get to me x

Zooming into the Northern Power grid map. I'd charge up devices if you are in the area, and beware any sensitive computer equipment that doesn't like being turned off suddenly. I'd also not go mad with using any other electricity that you don't need to.

Dad reports Wetherspoons AC has broken
I am WFH and feel sick/faint now, pale redhead who doesn't do heat but work is incredible busy (am on my break with a fan!)

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 13:55

I’ve have returned from the bliss that is the frozen veg aisle!

my car recorded 43c which is just crazy! I’m off to have my 3rd shower of the day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 13:56

If you need to report a power cut and aren't sure who your supplier is
www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/power-cut
If you end up with no internet to view power cut details and need to report one, remember the phone number 105. I expect it will be swamped though.

I'm in Pontefract and our power is still on but lots of streets nearby are off, I went to the shop and filled the freezer with ice creams less than an hour ago so I hope it ours doesn't go off Grin

Caminante · 19/07/2022 13:57

I wonder whether if we also had high humidity with these temperatures, it would be unbearable enough for the climate change deniers to see things differently?

The only reason we're all managing at the moment is the very low humidity.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 14:01

poo. That wasn't the right link. Can I blame melty brain. That one is just for parts of the SE
