Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

You may see on social media and perhaps in the media that Chorlwood is about to, or has, surpassed the UK record. Hold fire on that, it may be running too warm compared to other local sites. Any records need to be verified by the met office and this can take at least until the next day.

However, it is certain that the UK record will be broken today.

I am at home wearing a wet t shirt and life is great! I didn’t send DC’s today as they’ve just got over Covid and I don’t want any relapse. I bought a couple of packs of ice lollies this morning but strangely- they haven’t been eaten!

Having said that, the Met Office are provisionally happy with it.
UK record looks to have been broken before Midday. That's just astounding,

@CaveMum thanks for the update on the A14, and also the botanic gardens temp for yesterday. I posted on one of the older threads that I was convinced we hit 39 yesterday because driving home from Duxford along m11 my car thermometer didn't go below 40. However, I stand corrected, or can I sit corrected please...I'm not feeling 100% and glad I took leave to keep the kids off.

Just put another load of washing on the line and I cannot actually conceive it getting any hotter

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 11:55

36 here in Surrey.

27 inside .

Reckon we might get to 38 but thankfully not 40.

Planetearthisscrewed · 19/07/2022 11:56

39.1 in Surrey, hottest ever day in the UK. The thought that in 10 years time this could be considered the norm is terrifying quite frankly

Greensleeves · 19/07/2022 11:58

29 degrees in my living room in Exeter, and it's just started drizzling outside. Feels tropical, DH and both have headaches and dizziness Sad

Motorina · 19/07/2022 11:59

@CaveMum thank you - I’ll be east of there so fingers crossed.

(I’d cancel if I could, but…)

EmmaH2022 · 19/07/2022 12:01

Wonder if we are at 40 already in London.

also wondering if night time will be any better.

ihatethecold · 19/07/2022 12:01

Not officially.

I think it is still going to feel like a very hot night I'm afraid.

39.1 degrees. That is ferocious heat.

baroqueandblue · 19/07/2022 12:07

SE London here, not too far from the river. BBC Weather app tells me it's currently 33° and set to climb to 34 by 2pm, but will start to lower around 5pm. That's us downgraded from a predicted 38°, which has been a scary prospect for the last few days. But I'm not complaining - forewarned was forearmed!

Hoping everyone is keeping just about cool enough. I'm usually not comfortable with anything above 26° so if you're anything like me I really empathise. Stay safe, you and the kids! 🤗

baroqueandblue · 19/07/2022 12:10

Oh gawd, I'm an utter arse. My app keeps switching between where I am and Herne Bay Hmm It's 37° here right now, dropping to 36 by 5pm 😰

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 12:11

@Greensleeves

FIrst sign of heat stress get yourselves plenty to drink and cool yourselves off with damp cloths. Of it does not improve in 30 minutes seek medical advice on 111.

I'm sitting here with a wet towel around my head - it makes quite a significant difference. Going to add a wet towel around my middle soon! Covered myself in a wettish towel last night and woke up in the night with goosebumps.

NCHammer2022 · 19/07/2022 12:13

33 in Newcastle and climbing, doesn’t look forecast to get below 30 until 8pm, or any storms or rain. Incredibly unpleasant but not as hot as some of you are having to deal with and at least I’m working from home with my shorts on and feet in a bowl. I feel for the teachers, nursery staff, healthcare workers etc dealing with this today.

GloriaSmud · 19/07/2022 12:16

Dark clouds looming in Jersey, Possible thunderstorm approaching?

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 12:17

Forecast says 39 for three hours. Going to try and get the kids over to their dad's house. It is 29.5 ISH in the flat and I am moving very slowly to getting ready.

DS is mithering to use the computer.

We will walk a few extra feet to dad's as parking slightly further up.the road means the car eventually catches the shade of houses and is less oven like at going home time. Going to give out drinks and suckers soon.

Annoyingly all the storms seem to be avoiding making landfall and just skirting up the Channel.

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 12:24

Braving the supermarket now! Send out a search party if I’m not back by 3pm!

I dread to think what the temp is inside my car, thank god for air con!

Cotherstone · 19/07/2022 12:25

Hertfordshire here, have just come outside for a probably ill-advised cigarette and my nose is tingling breathing in the outside air like I’m in a sauna 😳

TokyoSushi · 19/07/2022 12:28

Breeze has stopped in Cheshire and now 36, gah!

WorryMcGee · 19/07/2022 12:29

I’m having an absolute nightmare. We are up the road from Charlwood that just claimed the record breaking temperature so far today of 39.1 - I have no idea what the temperature is in my village but it can’t be far off that, it’s only a couple of miles away - and I have a 13 week old who’s just been put in a pavlik harness and is HATING it 😢 oh and it’s my birthday. Yay. Send cooling thoughts…
