Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

I'm on a cool mat.

I have had no emails this morning, maybe I should be worried!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 10:48

Complete non-event so far on east coast of Scotland slightly north of Edinburgh. 22 degrees and overcast. 19 degrees inside thanks to all my (so far unnecessary) precautions!

ihavenocats · 19/07/2022 10:54

It's no hotter then when I was doing the rounds as a carer back in 2000, extremely hot, water poured down my uniform dried instantly. All the elderly folks had their heating on! Was nuts. Nice though.
That was hotter than this.

Last night was the hottest night on record for the UK and yesterday was the hottest day ever in Wales, breaking the record set in 2000. So this weather really is unusually hot!

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 11:04

Cambridge Botanic Gardens (holder of the current record temp) have tweeted to say yesterday's peak temp recorded was bang on 38C at 3.38pm, just shy of the day's record of 38.1C up the road in Suffolk. They only check their instruments once a day, at 10am, so it will be tomorrow morning before we know what they hit today.

Meanwhile, my load of washing that went out on the line at 9.30am has just come in bone dry - probably could have brought in half an hour ago, and load number 2 is about to come out of the washing machine! I've washed all of last night's bedding (4 beds) as it was such a sweaty uncomfortable night for all.

BestIsWest · 19/07/2022 11:06

Tipping down in Gower, S Wales apparently though yet to reach us on the edge.

yellow13 · 19/07/2022 11:15

So this has been a lifesaver. Gel cooling mats for pets (and humans)

We put one under my DD's crib sheet and she slept all night.
Also slept downstairs.

the gel pads re-cool themselves if left unattended for 20 mins.
It's instant relief.
We got 2 - 1 for my DD and one for DH and I to share.
May end up buying a 3rd.

Some unofficial reports of 36C already in places like Cambridge.

Yes, I bought Ds1 a gel mat as he gets very hot very easily and won't wear shorts (ASC). It works very well.

I decided to take advantage of everything being so warm and mop the floors. Then my mop broke!

Motorina · 19/07/2022 11:22

@OhYouBadBadKitten 35.5 in my garden, in a village east of Cambs, so I can quite believe it’s that in the city.

Cambs police have posted to say they're inspecting the A14, main trunk road running east to west through east anglia, not too far from me as the surface appears to be lifting in the heat 😱

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2022 11:26

I suspect my school is representative of a nationwide trend (or at least a redwide trend) - less than 50% attendance today and lots going home now.

Piggywaspushed · 19/07/2022 11:27

England playing cricket in Chester-Le- Street today! I feel for the cricketers!!

BobBobBobbing · 19/07/2022 11:31

@Piggywaspushed DH is off to the cricket. He normally rolls his eyes when I go on about suncream and hats but has voluntarily put them on and has big bottles of water rather than existing solely on beer. I still think he's buts for going.

justasking111 · 19/07/2022 11:31

Just bought a desk fan from ASDA I'm not moving again today it's bliss. 30c an hour ago

wonkylegs · 19/07/2022 11:31

@PickAChew
Yep the Costa del Darlington is a little warm today - the weather centre at the airport currently says it's 32
I've just put more water out for the birds as even the pigeons look listless.

There is going to be a LOT of heatstroke!

Phrenologistsfinger · 19/07/2022 11:34

Thunder, lighting and bucketing rain in Cornwall! About 20c, but humid given hot surface rain is landing on. Cool
air is welcome though!

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 19/07/2022 11:35

Its 34 in my part of kent. Am sat in front of an air cooler with Ddog keeping cool, dreading the school run later

Motorina · 19/07/2022 11:36

Now at 36.

@CaveMum i’d be grateful for any info you have on the A14 - I have to drive on it at 5pm!

ListenLinda · 19/07/2022 11:42

I think i’m going to move DDs mattress into our room for tonight.

her bedroom is an attic bedroom so of course heat rises, i’ve just been up to get her a change of clothes for after school and it was like walking into a sauna.

Crikey it’s hot

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 11:44

@Motorina the current issue is westbound near Newmarket so not sure if you are going past there. They've not closed it, just "assessing" at the moment.

Can report there is quite a breeze picking up in Cheshire. Admittedly it's the type of breeze similar to when you open a fan oven, but the air is moving!
