Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

Ah it's the humidity is it, stopping my lovely sweat evaporating therefore heat rash ! I couldn't work out why we both suddenly felt worse this afternoon!

TenoringBehind · 20/07/2022 21:05

I’m finding the humidity of today much harder to cope with than yesterday’s heat.

also in East Mids but no rain here and none forecast. Just been surveying the damage caused to my garden by the heat. Pretty much all the flowers have shrivelled up. My poor roses look very unhappy indeed.

Tiggertum · 20/07/2022 20:45

It is so humid here - feels really horrible! House still very warm (27 in bedrooms) and the humidity means it’s just not cooling.

Everyone overtired and grumpy here

And here. I am thoroughly pissed off with being hot and swear I will never, ever again complain about being cold. Cold is good.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2022 21:19

Intellectually I knew that heat health effects lasted after the event, but I didn't actually expect to feel it.

Felt awful this morning after another night of no sleep and it felt really humid in the house, very grumpy and emotional, ended up going to the supermarket and loitering around the chilled areas, until my inner cool and calm returned !
It's going to drop to 15 tonight, which is my favourite temperature ever Grin

lollipoprainbow · 20/07/2022 21:33

Still feels so hot !! Was hoping it would start to cool down today/tonight but it hasn't 😢

etulosba · 20/07/2022 21:56

Not at all? Where do you live?

Vintagevixen · 20/07/2022 22:08

Coastal East Sussex here and its cooled down so much - house is now at 21 downstairs. Live on the top of a hill and am getting an amazing sea breeze through the windows which helps.

I am beyond relieved - felt so unwell Tuesday afternoon despite all windows shut/blinds etc. I woke up this morning feeling normal and ready to do things.

It's taken me the whole day to begin to feel slightly well. Really not funny.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2022 22:15

My house is still at 27.5c. I think that's the issue. Outside is cool, but it doesn't want to come inside.

colouringindoors · 20/07/2022 22:23

Oh no! That's hot still! Can you put a fan on the windowsill of a open window, pointing in - should bring outside air in

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2022 22:33

Absolutely poured here. Steam rising from road surface. Still pretty warm but my house does feel mostly cooler. 28 in kitchen though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2022 22:36

We have stupid narrow windows sills. I'll have to try and balance one on something. Good idea though!

That's what mine was yesterday, actually a bit lower most of the day and I struggled like crazy. We're down to 21 in the house now, what a difference. Hope it cools down for you soon. Have you done the MN trick of a damp sheet over you? I've always thought it sounded revolting but it cools you down so fast. I use a cotton sarong which I run under the tap then wring out as much as I can.

Well I've come out in a heat rash all over my stomach and back. (The chips were still worth it ! )

Presumably after being so hot it takes our bodies a while to calm down? ddog has been much happier but panting all day still .

One of mine's the same. Wasn't too bad yesterday, actually. Today she's lying on the tiles and panting. Go figure.

Thanks 😊

Try the damp sheet,it's enabled me to sleep the last couple of nights. Have a tepid shower and wet your hair, don't dry it just scrunch it with a towel a bit and do the damp sheet and you will be much cooler in no time.

I have to say I'd be crying if it was hot here again, I'd had enough!

NormaLouiseBates · 20/07/2022 22:55

I too have felt dreadful all day, almost like a hangover. It's much cooler here now (West Midlands) and I'm so grateful.

I was wondering @OhYouBadBadKitten if there are anymore extreme temperatures forecast? You seemed to know this horrific hot spell was coming first so I'll be getting all my weather news from you in future 😉

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2022 22:15

My house is still at 27.5c. I think that's the issue. Outside is cool, but it doesn't want to come inside.

Given how warm my walls around the window felt on Monday, I suspect a lot of the heat retention is the released heat from walls and possessions.

I can feel a cooler air coming in but the thermometer sat on a cupboard is still at 29.

Like a pp I also had the oven on to cook the chicken that I foolishly forgot to cook before it got hot. And was just about on its last date. Not helped. I have had to wash up a bit too.

BlackeyedSusan · 20/07/2022 23:23

It's been a bit of a day here one thing or another. Dd is off school due to finishing exams. We have had to catch up on shopping to replace the masses of milk ds drinks. I've cooked to start using up the veg that has been untouched in the fridge the last three days due to heat and not wanting to stress out the fridge and make it break/ heat up the flat by opening too often. Nor did I want to cook. I need to use up a lot of courgettes tomorrow.

Also feeling tired but that is partly staying up late to wash up in the cool one night and also a non sleeping late night teen. None of my normal naps in the afternoon due to looking after kids in ex's house as it was cooler until he decided to cook.

Chatting to a random bloke working next door to ex and he was saying he was shattered from the heat.

The hot weather makes you tired.

My poor elderly neighbour was really poorly with the heat and she has a flat facing both ways so somewhere cool to retreat to.

No! Pointing out of the window!

Blows hot air out, so cold air comes in through the open windows elsewhere to replace the hot!

(only works when outside is cooler than inside, obviously)

See my post, above

Tiggertum · 21/07/2022 06:18

Does people find the fan thing actually works on practice?

i read an article saying it was a common myth - as you’d need to have the window open very wide and such a huge fan to actually make a difference to the mass of air in the room. Alternatively if the window only open a small
amount the air that moved would be negligible so no difference be either.

ihatethecold · 21/07/2022 06:30

Yes. Using a fan has made me not loose my head.
I'm sleeping with one pointing at me with a freezer block and ice in a Tupperware in front of it.
