Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

I read that the rail network got 9km longer yesterday.

Ooooh that's a fun fact..does that mean all the trains that did run were late by a proportionate amount?......

🙄

What? 😂

BlackeyedSusan · 20/07/2022 16:25

Individual rails would expand to fill the expansion gap that is left between them. Presumably less of a clackety clack as the trains go over the gaps

Just done 4x12 hour shifts in social care with a mask of course! Feel really quite sick today with a headache that won't go away. Drank 4 pints of water during my shift yesterday, but clearly wasn't enough.

Also hope you feel better soon. That sounds horrendous.

borntobequiet · 20/07/2022 16:55

The very good train guy was explaining how rail tracks are stressed to cope with heat yesterday on the Today programme.
I love it when experts like him are brought on and the interviewers nearly can’t cope with talking to a sensible, knowledgeable grownup who is keen to share important and interesting information clearly and concisely, instead of the usual bunch of waffling and question dodging political interviewees who clutter up most of their programmes with lies and evasion. They thank them effusively in tones of near hero worship.

The Very Good Train Guy sounds like a TV show.

I'm still knackered and I'm meant to go out. The flat is boiling though and I only have to walk 20 mins so I should go. The place has air con!

stillherenow · 20/07/2022 18:10

It feels hot here again, after being ok all day! I'm sticking the oven on regardless I have a craving for chips !

I have an air fryer, yay.

i've decided not to go out. Can't stop yawning. It's a group hobby, I hope enough people turn up. I just had dinner and feel no different. It would be amazing to actually get to sleep early but that never happens.

I’d watch it!

Yes, I can imagine this show already.

I'm guessing the quiet of the board means people have got better weather. It's horrible in here. I'm sitting in front of the portable unit.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/07/2022 19:44

I'm relieved to read of other people feeling wiped out still. I was beginning to wonder if there was something wrong with me. I lost something earlier and part way through looking for it just lay on the floor in exhausted despair instead.

Why won't my house cool down!

PickAChew · 20/07/2022 19:45

It's cooled down, this evening and the house is finally down to 25, inside. There's the suggestion of a few spots of rain but it's a few miles away on the radar, not heading any nearer and doesn't look like enough to even wet the soil surface.

Menomadness · 20/07/2022 20:01

Respect to those working in any conditions the last couple of days! I am still walking around draped in wet tea towels Blush
The breeze here has been helpful but the house is still very warm! It feels much more humid this evening. I am hoping the now grey sky may produce a little bit of rain to cool us down a bit. Cambs area.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/07/2022 20:03

House is 23 and I'm enjoying the slight chilliness!

Soubriquet · 20/07/2022 20:04

My thermometer is still saying 27 for my room despite having windows and doors open and a fan circulating the air.

are you okay?

the flats needs hoovering but I didn't have the energy. I have got the main room down to 26 with the unit now, the working day was 29, so not too bad.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/07/2022 20:09

I'm wiped out, I'm going upstairs in a bit to watch telly before an early night. The heat always renders me absolutely useless. It's not just you OYBBK.

Soubriquet · 20/07/2022 20:04

26 in mine, same. I've changed the configuration of fans in the hope of creating an air flow that pulls the cooler air in. Bedroom has not been below 24 for days, I woke in the middle of the night all hot and bothered. Tried to nap today as I had the day off (needed after working through it in 34+° clinic rooms yesterday) but couldn't settle.

stillherenow · 20/07/2022 20:39

Well I've come out in a heat rash all over my stomach and back. (The chips were still worth it ! )

Presumably after being so hot it takes our bodies a while to calm down? ddog has been much happier but panting all day still .

Perihelion · 20/07/2022 20:40

Provisional reading for yesterday at Floors Castle in Kelso, puts Scotland's highest ever recorded temperature at 35.1C.

stillherenow · 20/07/2022 20:43

DD didn't make it to school or her activity today, she's been feeling really unwell - but I think it's also just total exhaustion .

I wonder if a lot of people are feeling worse after the event ?

Tiggertum · 20/07/2022 20:45

It is so humid here - feels really horrible! House still very warm (27 in bedrooms) and the humidity means it’s just not cooling.

Everyone overtired and grumpy here

nannynick · 20/07/2022 20:57

I am currently seeing 64% humidity on my inside thermometer. I have two fans pointing out of windows on one side, and can feel cool air coming in from windows open on other side of flat. Was 24 degrees indoors 10 minutes ago, now 23.1 degrees, so it's working. According to WUnderground network, outside is around 19.7 degrees, 85% humidity.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/07/2022 20:58

Pouring down,East Midlands, hallelujah!!!
