Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4590238-met-office-red-warning-for-extreme-heat

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

Thank you so much OYBBK 💐

Thank you @OhYouBadBadKitten for all you have done to keep us
informed and help us prepare 😊

ListenLinda · 19/07/2022 22:27

The fan is now pointing at our bed. It’s helping a little bit

velvetvixen · 19/07/2022 22:30

Standing ovation for kitten 👏👏👏

Bravo, OhYouBadBadKitten.

This 👏

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 22:34

You're very welcome @FourChimneys and @CarpeVitam . As I said on the initial thread, I didn't actually think we would get to this stage, this year. It's been truly shocking for meteorologists and climatologists.

I hope people can get a reasonable nights sleep. It's still very warm in my house, I expect it is for most. Keep drinking water, the health impact of heat lasts beyond the initial very hot days.

Blush thank you @RhymesWithAntelope and @velvetvixen at least being on here saved my family from being cited various statistics and analysis constantly.

Thank you OYBBK!

Still absolutely horrible in the NE- says 26 but feels warmer. House is still above 30. It actually seemed to get warmer through the evening. Am in a N facing bedroom with wet socks on, a wet cloth over me, hugging a frozen water bottle and with another one positioned in front of the fan. Windows are wide open and I can barely breathe because I'm so hot. Yuck!

RagzRebooted · 19/07/2022 22:40

Thank you OYBBK, hugely appreciated all your work on here.
No, I didn't think it would actually happen, when you posted the first thread. But it did. Does not bode well for the future.
Also, my plan to escape hot summers by moving to Shropshire is looking pointless, so may have to be Scotland!
Even 40°C every 3 years is too much for me!

RagzRebooted · 19/07/2022 22:41

It's 23 outside, 24 in the lomiving room and at least 26 in the bedrooms, but a cooler breeze is coming through now, with the help of strategic fan placement.

Yes, definitely. It’s been a sobering day but so much great analysis and calm insight on this thread. Thank you.

Oo-er! sinister hedgehogs eh

They make a chittering sound when they eat - a bit like demadogs! I had no idea they made so much noise until this wee bairn joined us in the garden, last night.

Sis and I talked about this in 2018. Alas, I think we'd be better with summer in Scotland, post retirement, as I can't tolerate a Scottish winter.

EmmaH2022 · 19/07/2022 22:50

I wonder if it will feel better in the morning.

I don’t really understand how humidity affects us.

It slows the rate at which sweat evaporates off your skin so makes it harder to keep cool. The higher the humidity, the worse it gets.

Well I've learnt something new today! How interesting .

Bring the hedgehog

NCHammer2022 · 19/07/2022 22:54

Still too hot so I’ve swapped DH for my JML Chill Pillow straight from the freezer and gone in the spare room. It feels worse tonight which I think is higher humidity. I just hope I wake up tomorrow and it feels a bit fresher! (Forecast is 20 so fingers crossed.)

18c outside 27c indoors have put fan in the bedroom, front and back door open.

Was talking to architect today who said government have been so obsessed with insulation in homes especially new builds that people are now lumbered with overheating . What the future should be is passiv Haus. Whether the government of the day agree is another matter

Yes just I live in one of those. The thermostat switches itself off at 35. Sadly the fridge and freezer have usually failed by then.

EmmaH2022 · 19/07/2022 23:17

18c outside sounds grand.

Bring the hedgehog

It's hiding behind the chives after munching on the food a neighbour put out.

My hot house was first mortgaged in 1934!

PickAChew · 19/07/2022 23:23

Not as hot as Emma's, mind😱
