Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

We had a very small amount of rain earlier -sw London.

GloriaSmud · 19/07/2022 21:25

Temperature's gradually coming down here (Leicester) - it's 32.3C inside and 31.4C out at the moment. We had a few spots of rain about an hour ago and then the wind dropped and the humidity went up, which meant it felt worse than it did this afternoon. In the last few minutes though, the wind's got up again, not that it's making things feel any better!

EmmaH2022 I'm not a hot weather person at all. I'm Celtic and very fair and burn at the first sight of sun. But I work outdoors and had no choice so I decided to embrace it and wear sunscreen and loose clothes and ignore headlines saying thousands would die. And it worked. It was ok.

Oh I've no patience for the media, I barely see it

but I think 40 is hellish.

i live in a sauna so it was a weird choice but ultimately haven't left the flat today as I thought outside worse. We had some rain just now and the humidity is soaring.

ihatethecold · 19/07/2022 21:35

Im still so hot, even outside after a brief shower. Is it the humidity?
I don’t really understand how humidity affects us.

Notonthestairs · 19/07/2022 21:36

15 mins of heavy rain (Hertfordshire) but it remains warm (27) and humid.

colouringindoors · 19/07/2022 21:39

24 and 50% humidity in Chilterns.

RagzRebooted · 19/07/2022 21:41

Thunder and lightning here now (E. Sussex), come up from the south I think. Big rain drops, but not enough to send me inside (I'm in my hammock with a blanket!) as it's still 28 degrees upstairs and down to 24 outside. Humidity now 65.

peridito · 19/07/2022 21:43

@WorryMcGee oh poor wee thing though I'm sure it's worse for you .

Road has been closed for 24 hours so far. Worcestershire

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 21:56

Provisionally 33 places today surpassed the UK record, we reached 40c in England, Wales and Scotland surpassed their records over the last two days.

We have wildfires that have broken out across many locations, thousands have been without electricity, the rail network has been damaged in many locations, leading to the suspension of various lines. Roads damaged. We don't know yet how many have died, that tragic cost will be calculated in the coming days and weeks.

So it makes me angry that people are still claiming this was hyped and are still playing it down. What happened today is exactly what we warned you would happen.

Today we had a taste of what is to come under climate change. This was just two days of extreme heat. We need to wake up, we need to adapt our infrastructure for what is coming and as a world work towards zero carbon. If today doesn't wake you up, nothing will.

Im off to bed soon, it's been a long few days.

Omg. It's still 32 in the flat. No wonder I feel hot. Very humid here too. Clouds but no rain. The grass is parched. You can see why it would burn. Some dipstick was flicking ash out of the window earlier.

What are your indoor temps like?

34....

etulosba · 19/07/2022 21:59

I don’t really understand how humidity affects us.

It slows the rate at which sweat evaporates off your skin so makes it harder to keep cool. The higher the humidity, the worse it gets.

ListenLinda · 19/07/2022 22:01

Is anyone else still not being able to cool down? Just been up to DS and come back downstairs and i’m dripping.

Motorina · 19/07/2022 22:04

I made it to my vet appointment and back. Past one place where the road surface had raised up in the heat - there was a very hot looking copper blocking that lane.

29 inside and out. No sign of rain or the heat breaking.

Cr22345678990 · 19/07/2022 22:06

Storm brewing in south east, lovely breeze coming through the window finally!

velvetvixen · 19/07/2022 22:07

Bravo, OhYouBadBadKitten.

PickAChew · 19/07/2022 22:15

27 outside, 30 downstairs and 32 upstairs. DH and I are out in the garden with cold drinks, listening to the hedgehogs make sinister noises.

NCHammer2022 · 19/07/2022 22:19

It feels way more humid here tonight (Newcastle). It’s allegedly down to 25 degrees but still feels really oppressive.

velvetvixen · 19/07/2022 22:21

We had a miserly sprinkling of rain. Made no difference.
