Part 1 was getting a bit giant and in the miraculous event that I manage to sleep in a little tomorrow, it seems a good idea to start the new thread a little early. Part 1:

Met office warnings www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings

We didn't quite get to record UK temperatures, though lots of site records were achieved and Wales beat its previous record temperature by more than 2c. Tomorrow we look very likely to beat the UK record and to surpass 40c.

Tonight, obviously, do everything you can to cool your homes down, it won't be easy with lows of 24c in some places. One more day and it will feel much better for many.

I worked both days in an NHS kitchen. It was ridiculously hot both days, no reduction in the meals provided (multiple hot lunch choices followed by soup, jacket potato and rice pudding for supper). No aircon, no windows that open properly and it is constantly above 45 degrees but on a positive note it feels cool outside and in my house!

Blimey, you're made of strong stuff.

anyone know the cause of the fires?

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 17:48

Just had a chat with teenage dd about never jumping off bridges etc and she's just shown me multiple social media posts from people in her year doing exactly this ! Luckily she's not keen on the idea !

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 17:49

RAiN!!

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 17:50

Oh it's just stopped

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 17:54

I think the rain will be a disappointment for many in terms of lack of it.

Scottish record also broken today.

A quick Google would disagree with you.

Really interesting thanks!

QuebecBagnet · 19/07/2022 18:18

Will it be hotter overnight tonight than last night or cooler?

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 18:25

Anyone opening windows yet ? It's 28 inside and 32 outside . Wondering if I might get a breeze through ?

Where are you based?

Highest reading for my weather station was 41.5C in the end but the sun is getting hazy now and the temperature's dropped to 34.9C Not opening any windows just yet until it's dropped below the inside temp of 33.6

BlackeyedSusan · 19/07/2022 18:34

Ex's windows are open as he decided to use the oven and hob.

I've just opened the back door and can feel a slight breeze and I mean slight.

JangolinaPitt · 19/07/2022 18:39

Ooooh -interesting map

CarpeVitam · 19/07/2022 18:39

Still 31C outside here but have opened the windows/doors as there's a slight breeze 👍

CaveMum · 19/07/2022 18:42

I’ve opened the windows in the kids’ bedrooms slightly so that when I come to check on them later I can just give them a shove to open wider and let the cooler air in.

Still stifling here though, this is definitely the worst part of the day for me.

Spudlet · 19/07/2022 18:45

Norfolk Fire Service have declared a major incident due to the number of fires that are burning at the moment. There’s at least one crop fire relatively near to us (although fortunately not near enough to be alarming on a personal level). It’s not good. Everything was tinder dry before this, and there are so many stubble fields around us.

SeaGrassMirror · 19/07/2022 18:48

@Spudlet my family member is a firefighter. He said no cover available between Cromer/Yarmouth/Norwich as they’re all out on field fires.

nope. still have a 9 deg difference here. weirdly i find it harder to cope with the heat in the evening 🤔

Tiggertum · 19/07/2022 18:49

Suddenly gone very cloudy where I am. Feels like the humidity shot up at the same time. Quite oppressive

AlphaAlpha · 19/07/2022 19:06

Big, fat rain drops here (that lasted all of 2 mins) and a sudden strong and welcome breeze.....

Plasmodesmata · 19/07/2022 19:08

Yes we had quite a breeze this afternoon. A very hot one but still a breeze. It's now very still, feels humid, inaccurate thermometer at 31 (got up to 39 earlier)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 19/07/2022 19:09

grey skies, bit of a breeze but i have watered the tomatoes as i dont believe the rain forecast.

MarshaBradyo · 19/07/2022 19:09

London temp says it’s going to drop from
35C to 22C in the next hour

Amazing, not sure it’s happened before maybe I’ve just missed it

RedToothBrush · 19/07/2022 19:14

There is a fire up on winter hill near the tv transmitter. You can see it for miles.

DH has gone kayaking in Wales this evening. He normally does this regularly (but has been busy and not done so for a few weeks).

On days like this, there's always loads of idiots who he inevitably ends up rescuing.

I told him to be careful, but his view was it would be safer with him and his friend there tonight as they are trained in rescuing and are used to doing it.

But I am nervous all the same. He always seems to have a crazy story when the sun comes out.

Perihelion · 19/07/2022 19:14

Peaked at 31C in Edinburgh today, which is almost as hot as it's ever been here. Temp now dropping, 6C in the last hour and can feel a lovely cooling breeze from the North sea. Feel for you all further south.
